Michael Penuel has been named the new Chief of the Department for Western Carteret Fire & EMS.

Chief Penuel began his new role as the interim Chief on July 1, 2024.
He has served the citizens, visitors, and fellow firefighters of Carteret County with great dignity for the past 24 years.

Chief Penuel began his fire service career at Western Carteret Fire Department in 2001 as a Firefighter/EMT. He quickly rose through the ranks to achieve the rank of Fire Captain in 2007 where he served until 2011 when he was promoted to the position of Assistant Chief of Operations and Training.
He holds many professional degrees including an A.S. in Fire Science from Columbia Southern University, a B.S. in Fire Administration from Columbia Southern University, and a M.A. in Organizational Leadership/ Human Resources from Waldorf University.
Chief Penuel possesses extensive fire and emergency medical service knowledge as well as holds numerous prestigious certifications in training, management, and advanced leadership.

His level of dedication to the department, his compassion to serve our community, and his desire to develop future leaders is unwavering and inspiring.

We look forward to Chief Penuel leading our department for many years to come!

1776 Doolittle Court, no injuries were reported, dogs rescued from the home.
Ayden Fire Department with M/A Town of Winterville, Winterville Community, Red Oak, Grifton, Eastern Pines, Black Jack, Gardnerville, Hugo and Staton House, departments; fire was determined to have started from a workshop/ garage behind the structure.

This morning, June 23rd at around 2:30am BCFD was dispatched out for a residential fire alarm. First arriving units found a multiple story residence with no smoke or flames showing from the exterior of the house. There were multiple vehicles in the driveway. The front door to the residence was locked. Believing there to be occupants inside Fire personnel attempted to make contact by ringing the door bell, knocking on the doors and windows, blasting the sirens and air horn on the fire truck but was unable to get anyone to come to the door. Fire personnel went around the rear of the structure and was able to see inside of the house and noticed a large amount of smoke inside the house. At this time fire personnel forced entry into the house. Firefighters found a pot on the stove with the stove eye turned on. The occupant of the house was found asleep in the bedroom. Fire personnel were able to remove the pot from the residence and cut the stove off. The occupant was unharmed and there was no fire damage to the residence. Fire personnel remained on scene until the house was completely clear of smoke.

Please let this serve as a reminder to never leave food cooking unattended and make sure to confirm all cooking appliances are off prior to going to bed.

Please keep the Rowan-Iredell Fire Department and their families in your thoughts and prayers. Rowan-Iredell Fire Department lost two of their members in an ATV accident in West Virginia.

Scotch Irish Fire Department and Cool Springs Fire Department will be covering calls for Rowan Iredell until further notice.

Fire danger is high across the Coastal Plain and Sandhills. Fine, dead fuels can ignite quickly. Unattended fires are likely to escape and spread rapidly. Let outdoor burning wait until your area receives significant rainfall.
