A couple of weeks ago, we enjoyed participating in The Cookout, celebrating people of color in color guard, following the WGI Sport of the Arts Guard Championships. Met a lot of great people and heard inspirational speakers.

Okay, in case it’s not on your radar yet, ’s ‘90s Kids is a gem— it’s basically the q***r Back to the Future of my dreams. It’s such a broadly ambitious concept, and Savy executes it so deftly, with so much specificity and nuance. But it’s also such a love story at heart (and I would pretty much follow Bex and Nicole to the end of time and back).
But I don’t think I’m fully explaining what this book meant to me, as someone who’s lived through every part of its real-world timeline. Bex is born in 1990, Nicole is born in 1999, and they meet as sixteen-year-olds in 1989. As someone who thinks a LOT about experiences of q***rness across generations, it was incredibly meaningful to see this explored in three different moments in time (1989, 2006, 2015). There’s no singular q***r experience, nor is there one narrative for shifting norms in its cultural context— but as someone who lived through all of these time periods, this particular story reallllllly resonated with me.
