This week's episode also had some reviews of Abigail(2024), Pledge Night(1988) and Nina Forever(2015).
The upcoming Horror Hound Weekend is having a lot of the cast of Abigail attending so that is pretty neat.

We wrap up our boarding school themed month with The Moth Diaries(2011). This movie puts the bored in boarding school. We acknowledge that it was not made for us but that doesn't excuse its utter blandness. A very unremarkable movie. Not only was it bland but it is also very unfocused. We don't know why a lot of things happened and a lot of things are unresolved. It was just.........sorry trailed off there just thinking about this movie. Nice location though.

This week's episode also had a quick review of Alien: Romulus. Slight spoilers ahead so just a heads up!

Andy loved the first half but thought it kinda trailed off at one point and thought the movie just kept ending. He also felt there was also a little too much fan service. Coulda been great but still a good scary movie.
More thoughts on the episode so give it a listen!

Our boarding school themed month continues with The House That Screamed(1969). You know that saying if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything. Well, that's the review. Thanks! Bye!
Just kidding. The house was nice at least.
This was a movie that had a lot of set up with no payoff. So many threads that went nowhere. A lot of characters but none had any resolution. A very meandering movie. It's supposed to be horror/mystery but there was little horror and the only mystery was where is this movie going? A cool house and some artistically shot kills but that is about it. And a decent title? Woof!

This week's episode also has a review of Under Paris(2024). The Olympics are over and Andy needed something to fill that Parisian hole and this movie did just that. It was such a fun and entertaining shark movie! Shark horror movies can get very tired but this one was refreshing while still having the tropes of the genre. And the city of Paris was really a character too! This movie was magnifique! 🇫🇷🗼🥐🦈

Our boarding school themed month continues with Child's Play 3(1991). A worthy addition to the beloved Child's Play franchise even though this may not get as much love as the other movies. One of the best things about this franchise is the consistency throughout all the movies and 3 is no exception. It can be very dark and mean at times but those aspects are easier to take because c'mon, it is about a foul mouthed killer doll. Chucky is the star of course but he is backed up by some memorable characters and dialogue. The finale in a carnival was so fun and features the dark ride of our dreams. Brad Dourif is always a highlight and makes Chucky loveable. A really enjoyable horror!

This month we are covering movies that take place in boarding schools and we start with Night of the Demons 2(1994). This is a sequel to the classic 80s horror but boy does it not do the original any justice. A very unfocused and tedious movie. It takes forever to get going and the destination is not worth the trip. By the time things start happening you don't care what happens because there are a million different main characters and we are not invested in any of them. The acting is also very not so good. There are some funny and entertaining bits and the practical effects are well done but this movie is just UGH.

Some more reviews on this week's show! Freddy and Amy discussed In A Violent Nature(2024). They were somewhat disappointed in this. Great concept but maybe too much walking/lingering between the kills. It was probably a victim of high expectations but it was just okay for them.
Andy reviewed Ma###ine(2024) and it was another victim of high expectations. X and Pearl were so good that he wanted more from Ma###ine. It was a decent slasher but just couldn't match the other movies in the trilogy. Best part was Mia Goth who gives another great performance.

The second part of our Abracadaver finale double feature was listener Nick's pick, The Boxer's Omen(1983). What a cool and gnarly movie! It's hard to describe this but it is just a wild ride. Magic fights, floating heads, lots of goo, naked demon ladies, puppets-this movie has it all! Seriously, it is just easier to watch it. You won't be disappointed. Crazy, man! This is from the legendary Shaw Brothers studio and features kung fu icon Bolo Yeung so those are extra cool points. Thanks for the rad pick, Nick!

We wrap our magic themed month, aka Abracadaver, with part one of a double feature, The Wizard of Gore(1970). This is a very uneven movie. There is a lot of fun gore but little in between the blood and guts. The plot is pretty thin so they had to pad it out with a lot of nothing. But if you like scenes of women walking this movie is for you! The horror parts are not done particularly well but they have their own charm and they were committed. The ending is a big WTF but it fits the tone of the movie so it is not totally out of left field. A decent little movie.

Our magic/magician month, Abracadaver, continues with Magic(1978). This is a really effective little movie. Little in the sense that there is a tiny cast and basically one location but this movie does a lot with a little. It is really good at building tension and letting scenes play out without feeling overlong. The script is very well done with a lot of great lines and character development. The very few characters are given depth and nuance. This movie is really an acting showcase for Anthony Hopkins but he is ably backed up by Ann Margaret, Burgess Meredith and Ed Lauter. A very solid horror movie!

This month's theme is movies featuring magic and magicians and we are calling it AbraCadaver. We kick off with Lord of Illusions(1995). There is a nugget of a good movie here but the ex*****on wasn't quite there. The main problem was that the villain wasn't well defined. We were confused about his intentions and his powers so there were no stakes or urgency. This was a mix of film noir and horror but there wasn't enough of either to be successful. The mid 90s CGI was very mid 90s. There were some good horror scenes and the practical effects were really well done. Another plus was shirtless Scott Bakula 🤤 A mixed bag of a movie.

Our nunsploitation month, Andy Get Your Nun, wraps up with Demonia(1990). Lucio Fulci and evil nuns?! What could go wrong? This was supposed to be great but didn't quite live up to expectations. It was just sorta lazy and poorly made. There were some bright spots but the in between stuff was boring and not compelling. There was no urgency or much conflict. The movie also just kinda ended. It had a gorgeous location but they didn't shoot it very well. It didn't pop as much as it should but the interior shots were very well done. The best parts were the kills and gore. They were kinda crunchy with the effects but they were very memorable. Amy and Freddy were having nun of this movie but Andy thought the positives outweighed the negatives. A so so end to a great month of movies.
