A very special episode of the podcast is out today: the story of Lincoln's birth

Honestly this was incredibly therapeutic for me to plan, write, and share. I’m approaching this episode primarily as a way for me to process and document our birth - something for us, our family, to listen to later on in life.⁣ I'm happy to get to invite you, too.

Here are a few topics that were discussed:⁣

💫what it was like delivering during the covid pandemic⁣

💫A few tips that helped with my pregnancy overall⁣

💫A few tips that helped me the most during the birth⁣

💫Any red flag (or yellow) flags during pregnancy that would give us the idea that Lincoln would need to visit the NICU⁣

*TRIGGER WARNING* I talk about the transfer to NICU, and that was tough to talk about. This might be triggering for some, so you might want to skip past that part - it's at about 17 minutes. ⁣

hello!⁣
Wow, it's been awhile⁣
and when I say awhile, I mean about 4 months awhile

I've been itching to fire the mic up again - yesterday I finally did, and it felt so good.⁣

A lot, like a lot a lot, has changed since the last time I've done this.

Had a baby, baby's been in NICU since, resigned from my job, started a private practice, etc etc.⁣

Wow! So lately, I've really been practicing tuning into the universe - hearing and feeling and leaning into the nudges⁣🌟

Through meditation, movement, following my curiosity⁣
I felt it was time to share just a *little* something⁣

So here it is. ⁣
In this solo episode, I talk about...⁣
💫 a little review of why I started the podcast⁣
💫the shift that’s been happening, and how that relates to the show⁣
💫my reflections on the podcast so far, and⁣
💫where we are going from here⁣

It's a start.

After a few weeks of not releasing an episode of the podcast (and to be honest, not really doing much of anything for the show at all), it's time to make it official: what about the mama? is on maternity leave, as we wait for baby to get here - could be any day now!⁣

Though baby has been taking up most of my brain power lately (naturally so), the small ways that I've made myself and my needs a priority have looked like...⁣
❤resting/vegging/napping on the couch⁣
❤taking walks⁣
❤weekly yoga class⁣
❤just being fully present with and soaking in my family, as is now⁣
⁣..and that just means less time for the podcast. Because we all only have a certain number of hours in the day, right? ⁣

There definitely have been moments where I thought I couuuld get this quick thing for the podcast done instead of veg/relax/etc, but then I remind myself that rest IS essential, and enough.⁣

And sidenote, you are doing enough, too. You are enough.⁣

It's a constant work in progress, this whole what about the mama? thing.⁣

It's the little things! It's all about the little things, my friends⁣

Episode #036 is out - I chat with Brooke from ⁣ ,a certified Nutritionist and Personal Trainer with over 13 years experience. Brooke coaches and mentors women to feel their best in their skin and mind through focuses on hormonal health, nutrition, mindset work, movement, and lifestyle/wellness components. ⁣

We cover topics ranging from...⁣
🫑tips on how to simplify healthy meal-planning as a mama (something I'm always looking to do)⁣
🥒how food impacts hormonal health which impacts day-to-day life⁣
🥦just doing your best when it comes to eating good food.⁣

Aaand to be honest: most days, I give myself a pat on the back for throwing some frozen veggies in the microwave for my family, even if the rest of the meal is a McDonald's burger or frozen chicken nuggets...and that is good enough. 🤷🏼‍♀️⁣ YOU are good enough ❤

Parenting is a lot of things, but it's definitely NOT this: perfect

Sidenote: There is no 🌟right🌟, or perfect, way to parent!

(Take a breath mama, you're doing great)

Something that works for me and my family, lifestyle, and aligns with our values, may not work for you. Who's right in that situation then? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Anyway, back to the episode. In this episode, I chat with Danielle Delorenzo, a rock star pediatric occupational therapist, author (her book was just released!) and mama with a neurodivergent son.

We dive into acceptance, the stigma behind perfect parenting, and how crucial it is to support our differences and show compassion to others. Because at the end of the day, we all have one goal: to do the best we can for our babies. Our paths may look vastly different, but our destination is the same.

The fact that a woman's body can create, house, and feed a real human being is mind-blowing⁣

I mean, our bodies create an entire ORGAN to take care of a human that grows inside of us. That sounds like something straight out of a science fiction movie, doesn't it?⁣

But that's not the focus of many forms of media - instead, the focus is to share ways to quickly lose that baby weight and how to bounce back to your pre-baby body.⁣

It's the unrealistic "before and afters"⁣

It's the articles about "how it only took me 6 weeks to get back into my pre-pregnancy jeans!"⁣

People are preying and trying to make money off of our insecurities, and that is so gross⁣

The whole "bounce back" culture is the resistance between us and accepting our new mama bodies.⁣

No wonder that many first-time mamas have distorted ideas of how postpartum "should" be!⁣ (yeppp, myself included)

That's what Emily, owner of Abide Health Coaching, and I chat about on this week's episode of the podcast. We talk about⁣
❤What disordered eating is, and how that impacts new mamas⁣
❤how our relationship with food impacts our children's relationship with food (whether we're aware of it or not)⁣
❤body acceptance and simple ways to start loving your AMAZING body a little bit more⁣

episode #033: what about being a mama of multiples?

Having one baby is a whole wild transition in itself, but what about
having twins? 👶👶⁣
Or even triplets? 👶👶👶⁣

That’s what I chatted about with Neely Neal, the guest on today's episode.⁣

Neely had triplets, along with a toddler. She lived to tell the tale! ⁣

Neeley Neal is a former NFL Cheerleader and tech career woman turned wife, mom, and the founder of the Go Fit Win community and Fired Up! Grown Up Cheer Camp event for women.⁣

Her story is remarkable and she shared some good tips on...⁣
❤transitioning into motherhood⁣
❤how to relinquish that need for control (and the positives that happen from doing so)⁣
❤filling your cup as a driven, do-it-all mama ⁣
⁣..not to mention life with triplets and a toddler!⁣

🥳Celebrating 1 year of the what about the mama? podcast-exactly one year ago today was the release of my very first episode!🥳⁣

I've been reflecting on this journey for awhile, because it blows my mind-if you would've told the past, pre-mama me that I'd have a podcast about motherhood that I'd be sharing with the world and actively talking about and telling mamas to listen to, I would've NEVER believed you⁣

Only a year and some change into motherhood journey and I've already realized that damn, moms are just sort of brushed aside, left in the dust, you know? Our bodies create and sustain life but yet we're weighed down with all kinds of expectations and guilt, with little to no offering of support. ⁣

And that's my why behind the podcast. Babies are CUTE, but what about the mama? We're pretty remarkable, too. ⁣

Thank you for being here, and for letting me figure this out along the way. No seriously, I didn't even have a name for the podcast before I started booking interviews😎

You can listen to the podcast by clicking the link in my bio or searching for what about the mama? anywhere you listen to your podcasts. Leave a review or share with a mama friend to show your support❤❤❤⁣

Cheers to another year🥂(and then some)!

One thing's for sure: this week's guest on the podcast is a woman that isn't afraid to go after what she wants, no matter what other people might think.

No wonder she's accomplished so much!

And to be honest, I adore people like that. Because it's something that I'm working on personally, but it's not an easy feat.

This week's guest is the one and only Stevi Carr, founder + CEO of WISe Wellness Guild.

During this episode, Stevi and I chat about the myths around adoption and her own journey, her perspective on being a “B+ parent”, and what she does that makes her feel like her. I truly enjoyed this conversation and getting to know her better!

We're back with a new podcast episode, #031 🥳⁣

I tell you what, the first trimester of this pregnancy was ROUGH. I pretty much felt like I had a terrible, terrible hangover (like THE WORST) for about 15-16 weeks straight 🤢 which meant no energy or bandwidth to do much of anything with the podcast.⁣

But now 25 weeks + a few days in and I'm feeling better, and I'm going with it. So here we are! ⁣

Prior to becoming pregnant with Lenny (and becoming a mama), I loooved working out and had a solid routine: run several times a week, lift weights a few times a week, yoga a few times a week.⁣

And then Lenny came along. My priorities shifted, and time to go to the gym quickly became a thing of the past.⁣

But! Getting exercise is still something that I love to do. Maybe I can't make it to a yoga class or the gym (yet...because there will be a time where I will be able to do that again) but being active and moving my body is still an important value of mine.⁣

One thing that I've been consistently practicing: feeling good about the movement that I do get. Just because I don't get an hour-long workout in, but instead get 10 minutes of stretching done, doesn't mean that it "doesn't count" or "isn't as good". Movement is movement, and it still counts. It is still good! ⁣

This is what Surabhi and I chat about on this week's episode of the podcast. Surabhi is the owner of and is a registered physiotherapist and postpartum athleticism coach. We talk about the intention behind our expectations, re-cultivating healthy habits around exercise, and the pressure to quickly "bounce back" after making and creating and birthing and feeding and caring for a real live human being (which is even more gross than the feeling of a 4-month hangover🤢🤢). ⁣

🌟New podcast episode!🌟

The first twelve months of a baby’s life are a crucial period for learning and brain development⁣

It is often said that “Parents are a child’s first and most important teachers.” ⁣

Yet, access to information, tools, and strategies for baby’s first year of life is not always readily available or utilized. New parents want the best for their child including all of the tools available, especially when they may not know how to promote or enhance their baby’s development.⁣

I loved this conversation with Bethany and Candi, founders of the program called Baby Know: Bodies, Hearts, and Minds. We talk about this part of development that isn’t always readily addressed: the emotional side. And stay tuned till the very end of the episode for something special just for you🌟⁣

Tune in by clicking the link in my bio, or searching for "what about the mama?" anywhere you listen to your podcasts ❤⁣

and p.s.: taking it easy over here in the world of Instagram. I've been fully embracing these feelings of "I-just-don't-want-to-post-anything RN" versus trying to barrel through them. This rest and break feels *right*. Just know that I'm still here, maybe showing up a little less, but I'm not going anywhere. Thank you for being here!

The power of community is truly remarkable, especially when it comes to mental health.⁣

Lisa Hardwick from A Life Postpartum, author of A Life Postpartum, is this week's guest on the podcast for episode #028. This episode couldn't be released at a better time, since May is mental health awareness month. ⁣

The shifts, transitions, and evolutions that happen in motherhood are amazing and have a huge impact on mental health; however, mama’s mental health is just something that isn’t readily addressed⁣

According to Postpartum Support International, 1 out of every 5 mamas have a mental health problem during pregnancy and in the first year following birth, and of those women, over 75% of them do not get diagnosed and do not receive adequate treatment and support. ⁣

"I wanted to become a mom so bad, so why am I now having feelings like this? I should be happy and overjoyed"⁣

"I should just have maternal instincts, right? This is a natural process"⁣

"This isn't something that people talk about much, so that just means I'm the only one struggling with this"⁣

Lisa and I chat about these topics. She shares her own beautiful motherhood journey, and we talk about strategies to support mental health.⁣

This episode has a ⚡TRIGGER warning⚡ because depression and the struggles associated with depression can be super touchy. We have space for you, but if you find topics related to depression (specifically postpartum), this might be an episode to skip. If you need help, text or call 800-944-4773, the number to PostPartum support international❤⁣

Episode #027 is out! and p.s., don't let the title fool you: Lorie and I talk about waaaaay more than simply food. ⁣

Lorie is the face behind the blog Lemons and Zest, where you can find simple yet delicious recipes that your whole family will love. I can personally attest to these recipes: they are simple, healthy, and delicious. Bonus! Lenny and Lana have approved just about all of them.⁣

Lorie is also the mama to a 3-and-a-half-year-old named Sam. Her motherhood journey has NOT been easy though. We chat about that, and we also chat about the realization she had around her own eating habits. Did these eating habits best fit her and her family's values and needs? (Spoiler alert: Nope).⁣

I honestly loved getting a peak into the person behind the blog that I get a lot of my dinner plans from. Tune in by clicking the link in my bio or searching for "what about the mama?" anywhere you listen to your podcasts.⁣

Happy occupational therapy month!
This episode, episode #25, is all about how occupational therapy can play a vital role in postpartum healing.

There's the physical healing after birth, but then there's also the mental, psychological, and spiritual pieces that shift and transform, and perhaps need healing, too.

Anna, an occupational therapist and founder of , and I talked about all the various ways that we as OTs play an essential role in postpartum healing.

Working with an OT may be beneficial if you...
✔experience pain during your everyday tasks (picking baby up, playing with baby, feeding, moving, sleeping)
✔pee when you laugh, sneeze, or move a certain way
✔find s*x to be painful or not enjoyable
✔struggle with the adjustment into this new Mom role
✔are less-than-confident in your daily routines
✔feel like you could use help getting some structure and consistency to your days (yes, it is possible even with a newborn!)
✔have become all-consumed in being "mom" and have forgotten yourself and who YOU are
✔could use some lactation/baby feeding support

Lots of good benefits with having an OT that's on your side postpartum! 🎵Listen to this episode by clicking the link in my bio or searching for "what about the mama?" wherever you listen to your podcasts.

One of the biggest parenting decisions to make, in my opinion, is how to deal with the sleepless nights that are most certainly part of being a mama. Sleep train/cry it out? Rush to each and every cry? When is it appropriate to do each? How? So many questions! This isn't an easy decision by all means because in the end, we all want what's best for our babies and family.⁣

Side-note: do you want to know something that I've quickly learned about being a parent? There's no magical right, absolutely correct answer for anything. At all. And that's terrifying. But we can, however, educate ourselves and then use our intuition to make the best decision for ourselves, our families, and our babies.⁣

This is a topic that's talked about during episode #024 on the podcast. Michelle from , an occupational therapist for over 24 years as a Neonatal/Pediatric OT with specific focus on posture, movement and connection for the precrawling baby, mama to three, and private practice owner right here in Cincinnati, OH, and I also talk about all kinds of things on this episode, such as⁣

🌟our views on sleep training/crying it out⁣
🌟one of the most important traits to learn to have in parenthood (hint: it's flexibility)⁣
🌟the meaning of co-regulation⁣
🌟finding the rhythm of your day, versus a routine. ⁣

Pregnancy is such a life changing experience already, but for Sarah Putt, an OT with 12+ years in early intervention, starting a family was a much harder decision that took a lot of mindful thinking and acceptance.⁣

In episode #023, Sarah and I talk candidly and openly about her pregnancy journey, from the decision to even becoming pregnant, to the emergency surgery she needed at 32 weeks pregnant (talk about terrifying), to the importance of self-care (as a healthcare practitioner - even if you aren't a parent)***. During this chat with Sarah, I truly enjoyed getting to know the person behind OT 4 Lyfe - a podcast and website dedicated to sharing her passion of occupational therapy with other practitioners, and anyone interested in the field of OT...and sidenote: this podcast has been my go-to whenever my OT heart needs a little pick-me-up, as her advocacy and love for this profession just shines through in each episode.⁣

***FYI - there is a trigger warning for this episode. Because Sarah and I talk so openly about her pregnancy journey, this episode might not be for you if you've struggled with pregnancy in any way.⁣

mom guilt: that nagging feeling of simply not doing enough as a parent, not doing things the "right" way, or making decisions that might “mess up” your kids in the long run.⁣

Sometimes, when I have one of those days, I have to "zoom out" of the situation and remind myself that:
I LOVE this baby with my whole heart, and I kept him safe and fed today. And that's enough for a "well done, Karena!"and a pat on the back! Anything else outside of those three things can be looked at as "extra" 🤣

In this week's episode, I chat with Maggie Wilheim, a therapist and new mama, about...⁣
🌟the difference between guilt and shame (and why that matters)⁣
🌟how our identity shifts impact our overall wellbeing as a mama⁣
🌟the importance of knowing our values, and how doing so is the KEY to lessening those gross mom guilt feelings⁣

Maggie was a joy to chat with! And I think that really shines through in this episode.⁣

Listen by clicking the link in my bio or searching for "what about the mama?" anywhere you listen to your podcasts.⁣

What're your thoughts on mom guilt? Is this something that you've struggled with? You definitely aren't alone!❤

03/15/2021

Does the idea of "parenting with patience and presence" sound too good to be true?⁣

If so, you're definitely not alone.

As a mom to an almost 1.5-year-old boy, with lots of big, emerging feelings and opinions on just about everything, I do occasionally find myself wishing to fast-forward the hectic-dinner-and-bedtime-routine hours, just so that I can have time to lounge on the couch, favorite snack in hand
⁣..but then feeling kind of guilty about it because "they'll only be this age once"🙄 ⁣

A few things though:⁣
1) I know that I'm not alone in feeling these feelings⁣

2) it's okay because I firmly believe that ALL feelings are valid⁣

3) approaching parenting with more patience and presence isn't as complicated as it might sound⁣

Parenting with a purpose sounds like a big undertaking, but in this episode, I chat with Ilana Beigel, a Mindful Parenting coach, yoga teacher, Speech-Language Pathologist, and mom of three with over two decades of experience, about how to take it step by step, and break it down into simple, easy to implement strategies for you and your family.⁣

How many things do you do that don't involve an outcome?⁣

That's a hard question, because technically anything we do has some sort of outcome attached.⁣

Everything that we do can have some sort of outcome attached to it:⁣

work to get a paycheck⁣
read to learn about xyz⁣
parent a certain way (i.e. implement routines, introduce foods in a particular order, etc) to raise a dependable, healthy, happy member of society⁣

But what if the perspective is shifted to focus more on the doing, versus the outcome?⁣

That's what illana and I chatted about during tomorrow's episode of the podcast ( #021). Illana is a Mindful Parenting Coach, yoga teacher, Speech-Language Pathologist, and mom of three with over two decades experience. ⁣

We talk about how to shift the perspective from outcome-focused to process-focused, and how patience and presence can be cultivated so that busy moms have deeper, more meaningful relationships with their children, and that means a happier family.⁣

When it comes to buying a home, there are countless things to do and keep track of, and it can be SO stressful.⁣

But thing is, it doesn't have to be.⁣

Maggie Wells, the guest for this week's podcast episode (the big #020!), is a Kentucky-based realtor that created the "Peaceful Move Method", incorporating her background in yoga and mindfulness practices into the whole house-buying process. With this approach, her goal is to make the entire home buying process, from searching to signing, as smooth and stress-free as possible, whether you're a first-time home buyer or looking to upscale your home for your family.⁣

TRUE or FALSE: The process of buying a home is just an always stressful, headache-inducing thing. It is what it is.⁣

FALSE. (I'll give you the answer even before this episode is released lol)⁣

But, can you imagine being a mama, doing all the mama things, and juggling everything that comes with fulfilling that role...⁣
then having to move on top of it all? Yes, to me, that sounds incredibly stressful!⁣

I have yet to experience buying a home, since Steve and I recently completely remodeled the house that he grew up in. There was a little bit of paperwork involved in that whole process, but when it comes to searching for, selling and buying a home: I know that there are so many little pieces that come along with doing all that!⁣

But the thing is, it doesn’t have to be all that stressful or complicated⁣

Tomorrow's episode of the podcast, (episode #020!) is a real refresher for mamas that are about to be, or even are in, the house-buying process. ⁣

Maggie Wells, a mama and realtor, and I chat about her Peaceful Move Method, which brings some ease into the whole house-buying process. We also talk about how she incorporates mindfulness into real estate, her yoga practice, and at the end of it all, what makes her feel like HER (one of my favorite questions to ask mamas).⁣

I know that some days, honestly, I feel like I just got thrown into this whole motherhood thing⁣

Most days, I'm just flying by the seat of my pants. I'm trying my best to: tune into, listen, and trust my own intuition, and broaden the lens in which I view motherhood. I'm figuring out as I go along and I'm practicing being okay with that.⁣

If you've also ever felt like motherhood is just one big fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants, figure-it-out-as-you-go adventure too, just know that⁣

❤you aren't alone⁣
❤there IS support⁣
❤you're doing a great job.⁣

Lisa and I dive into this topic during our conversation for episode #019 of the podcast, out now! ⁣

Lisa is an occupational therapist, mama to two daughters, wellness coach, yoga instructor, and plant-based food lover. ⁣

We also talk about what it means to be holistic, understanding the role of an OT in maternal wellness, and coming to accept the constant, ever-evolving transition of motherhood. ⁣
