Today, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education wrote to the college’s administration to combat this affront to student press freedom.

“This is man-bites-dog stuff — usually it’s the student newspaper that FOIAs the college, not the other way around,” said Adam Steinbaugh, author of FIRE’s letter. “This alarming move should concern anyone who supports a free press, student or otherwise.”

Intrepid student reporters regularly use open records laws to request information from public colleges. But in a bizarre reversal, Southwestern College in California is trying to use the law to demand its student newspaper turn over videos taken at a student government meeting.

USC’s Race and Equity Center interviewed 119 administrators, classified employees and faculty members at Southwestern College assess SWC’s racial climate. Executive Director Shaun Harper, Ph.D and his team of researchers identified six core problems with the college, and said SWC has the worst anti-blackness problem of the 50 schools they have researched. The President’s Cabinet requested a meeting with The Sun to address the contents of the report.

Southwestern College’s women’s soccer earned the right to compete at the California Community College Athletic Association playoffs after having an almost perfect season with 21 straight games undefeated. SWC lost to Grossmont College, 1-0, in the last 10 minutes of the season finale.
