Finnladies of Chicagoland is a non-political social club based in the Chicago metropolitan area. The purpose of the club is to maintain Finnish language among the members and promote Finnish culture. The Finnladies of Chicagoland club was actively involved with the Finnish Expatriate Parliament driving the dual/multi citizenship initiative in Finland . The club started following the publishing of

a book, authored by Maire Hillman, a Finnish woman living in Chicago . This became the seed for a group of Finnish women to get together as a book club in the 1970s. Later, in 1980, the book club evolved into the Finnladies of Chicagoland. Club activities are managed by an elected Board. Club members gather once a month at members’ homes to exchange news from Finland and to spread Finnish know-how. There are, however, no meetings in June, July, August and December. Meetings and communications are conducted in Finnish. Finnladies on Chicagon alueella toimiva epäpoliittinen sosiaalinen yhdistys. Kerhon tarkoituksena on ylläpitää jäsentensä suomen kielen taitoa ja tukea suomalaiseen kulttuuriin liittyvää toimintaa alueellamme. Finnladies osallistui aktiivisesti Ulkosuomalaisparlamentin toimintaan kaksois- tai monikansalaisuuden hyväksymiseksi Suomessa. Finnladies sai alkunsa, kun ryhmä suomalaisia naisia kokoontui Chicagossa asuneen Maire Hillmanin julkaistua kirjan. Tämä johti kirjakerhon perustamiseen 1970-luvulla. Kerhosta muodostui Finnladies vuonna 1980.

It has been fun and busy couple of weeks! First a wonderful visit to Swedish American Museum in Andersonville. There we had a tour of the interesting history of Swedish heritage and emigration to America by wonderful executive director Karin Moen Abercrombie. She had also organized delicious sandwiches and sweets with coffee for us in the Marimekko exhibit area . Few photos from there

🌍 😲 Finnic languages and dialects in the early 20th century:
suomi = Finnish
inkeroinen = Ingrian
karjala = Karelian
livvi = Livvi
lyydi = Ludic
vepsä = Veps
vatja = Votic
viro = Estonian
võro-seto = South Estonian

Finnish and Karelian are very close.
