The Porcelain War co-directors Brendan Bellomo overcame incredible odds, creating a documentary 6000 miles apart...

"We worked together with a team spread across four continents and many time zones. For example, in Australia, translations, editing, and post-production were happening around the clock. And in Poland, a collection of artists (BluBlu Studios) worked tirelessly on three animated sequences, featuring 7,000 frames of hand-drawn animation, to bring to life the art created by Slava and his wife, Anya, in order to depict their idyllic past, harrowing present, and hopeful future. And in Ukraine, our team captured more than 500 hours of footage on 15 cameras."

With BluBlu Studios’ Animations ‘Porcelain War’ Makes Oscar shortlist

How did we do it? A behind-the scene of the animation process from BluBlu Studios

"‘Porcelain War’ the acclaimed documentary featuring animated sequences by Warsaw-based BluBlu Studios, has been shortlisted for the Academy Award in the Best Documentary Feature category. The film, directed by Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev, which won the 2024 Sundance Film Festival’s U.S. Grand Jury Prize for Documentary, showcases the resilience of Ukrainian artists Anya Stasenko and Slava Leontyev amid conflict.

The documentary includes three two-minute vignettes where porcelain figures come to life with hand-painted animations created by BluBlu Studios. These animations provide a visual narrative that complements the artists’ experiences during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “Animation has been a part of this film since before we were even making a documentary,” said co-director Brendan Bellomo in an interview for Animation Magazine. “We knew animation would be the soul of this documentary.”

BluBlu Studios meticulously recreated the illustrations on the porcelain figurines, ensuring that the animation reflected the intricate details of Anya’s artwork. The team used high-resolution images and 3D scans to capture the essence of the original pieces, bringing them to life through subtle motion design. “We wanted the animation to feel like an extension of the narrative,” said Jędrzej Skrzypczyk, Executive Creative Director at BluBlu Studios. “Every motion and texture was designed to echo the fragility and resilience of the story.”

Incredibly exciting news to end the year. We are thrilled to be included in the 97th Academy Awards® shortlist for Best Documentary Feature Film. This is an important film and BluBlu Studios and Liz Laine Reps, Inc. were honored to be invited to participate in creating the animation for this remarkable documentary.

So this was great news to wake up to..... Studios Film Mayfly is on the "very long list" of animation short award contenders for 2024 Oscars.

"Figuring out the very long list of many shorts that will qualify to land on the shortlist for the Best Animated Short Film Academy Award each year is not an easy task! Nevertheless, we have compiled a list of the shorts that have won a qualifying prize at one of the world’s top film festivals or booked theatrical screening engagements to be considered by the Academy.
