A literary magazine for experimental writers who perform their work, including poets, playwrights, performance artists, storytellers--any writer/performer who considers themselves avant-garde or experimental. Karawane started out as Voices from the Well, out the lively open mic poetry scene in Minneapolis in the middle 1990s. Karawane is the name of a sound poem by Hugo Ball and Bruitism is from
many Futurist Manifestos to refer to the art of noise to cause a reaction. All of this was to signal that we were more like Cabaret Voltaire than a poetry slam. We take poetry, plays, performance, and fiction: any text that is also intended for performance. We also like messy, experimental work. If your work sounds like anyone else, if is straightforward and relatively easy to understand, if it is a "well-make play" or short story, if is tells rather than showing, it is probably not for us. Frankly, I couldn't tell you among a group of workshop fiction, which one is the best and which one isn't. If your work is a little bit messy but somehow delights me through the use of language, structure, or image, it might find a home here! In the coming days and months, I will be building up an archive of work we have published and possibly showcasing some new work as well. The magazine has been on hiatus for quite a while due to my own personal economic hardship and my need to get stable work, like all artists. This page is one more attempt to get work out to the public and get in the habit of publishing again. Please DO NOT post stories and poems directly to this site. They will be deleted.
