“All three of our films do a fantastic job exploring what it means to be a part of a family. The community the four of us have built as artists and friends over the last couple of years really shines through on the screen.” -K.D. Chalk

For we feature our interview with four powerhouse women in film: Pinar Binay, K.D. Chalk, Kim Cohen, and Nicole Crespo. We talk about how together they were empowered to make three shorts that screened and will be screening at HollyShorts 2024: "August & Ebony," "Carnivora," and screening tonight, "Survived By." The three vary in genre, but are tied together through their themes of family, and all three shorts have strong female-led casts. Link below to watch interview, and to learn more about this amazing group of people in film. We're so excited to follow them in their careers!

"I personally am not interested in the ‘nature versus nurture’ question of, ‘Was it the chicken or the egg?’ Of course, we as a society are obsessed with that, but I think it is important to challenge ourselves to stop placing complex people into archetypal roles, especially in the national dramas that we’ve watched unfold time and time again. In order to understand our complicity in these events, it is important to see them through a different lens. I suppose I chose the mother’s perspective in a bid to sort of humanize a character that we prefer to misunderstand.”

Cinema Femme's had the great pleasure of speaking with - daughter of two-time Oscar-winning editor (“JFK,” “Black Hawk Down”) about her stunning, extraordinarily assured directorial debut, “His Mother,” which is anchored by a shattering performance from . This story is specific to Sierra Leone, but I know, in many ways, that it is universal. Many of us do not have the tools or outlets to process traumas and in moments of crisis, we push away those closest to us and bury our thoughts and emotions deeper, destroying ourselves in the process. I'm not just making a film; I'm a part of a reclamation of narratives celebrating the strength and voices within our communities. I am re-energizing timely conversations as we evaluate things we need to learn, unlearn, and embrace within our identities and upbringings."

Today we feature our video interview with Oluwaseun Babalola about her narrative debut "Fighting Giants." She is crowdfunding through for post-production. Help her reach her goal of $10K, they are at 70%, let's make it 100%. "I want people to feel like, ‘wow, this person didn’t become like Beyoncé in the end, but my god, what a happy and uplifting ending.’ You just keep going, and you continue to stay in the process. I hope people go see it and they just feel like they watched a romantic summer movie that leaves them refreshed and joyful." - Nicole Riegel, Director of "Dandelion"

"I hope people see, and really connect with, the artist’s journey. And the film is not just for artists. It’s for anyone who has a passion, anyone that has a dream that maybe not everyone understands. Or a dream that isn’t guaranteed to put a lot of money into your bank account. This movie is for you as well. It’s about this woman who is just about ready to give up on the thing that she loves the absolute most in the world. I hope that people really connect with that, and feel encouraged to know that you’re not alone in that journey. And that if you still love it, then keep fighting for it." - KiKi Layne

Today we feature our interview with filmmaker Nicole Riegel and actor KiKi Layne about their film "Dandelion." “Dandelion” centers around a singer-songwriter, played by KiKi Layne, and her journey as an independent artist. The film is beautifully shot by Lauren Guiteras, and is inspired by Nicole’s personal experience working as a filmmaker. "Dandelion" comes to theaters nationwide tomorrow. Be sure not to miss it on the big screen!

Thank you Pat McDonald and HollywoodChicago.com for the opportunity to talk about one of my favorite films to come out of Sundance Film Festival, "Go Fish" (1994)! The film won the jury prize at Sundance in 1994, and was one of the first le***an films to have commercial success, and now has become a classic in the LGBTQ+ film canon. To boot it was filmed in Chicago, directed by Rose Troche, who co-wrote the film with Guinevere Turner ("American Psycho," "The Notorious Bettie Page," "The Watermelon Woman"). Seek out this film, and thank you to Gene Siskel Film Center of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for screening it's 4K restoration earlier this month. ❤

It was also great to revisit my Cinema Femme Magazine interview with Guinevere Turner while preparing this review, such an amazing person! https://cinemafemme.com/2023/08/31/guinevere-turner-on-her-book-when-the-world-didnt-end-a-memoir-and-her-groundbreaking-indie-go-fish/

“Keith and I have been in Chicago for almost thirty-two years. We came here just the two of us, and my theatre company—our theatre community—is our family. They helped raise Katherine. We don’t have immediate family here, so they pitched in and took care of her when we couldn’t. She was at our theatre from the moment she was born, and that is a safe and nurturing space for us. For me, that is the place where I am the happiest. It fills me with the most joy, and that is very much a part of what you see in this film.”—Tara Mallen

Today we feature our interview with the "Ghostlight" team, specifically Tara Mallen, Keith Kupferer, Katherine Mallen Kupferer, Kelly O'Sullivan, and Alex Thompson.

"I knew that I wanted to write about a q***r relationship. The script originally started as something more serious and it wasn’t working. It just didn’t feel authentic. Then I started thinking about all of the paranoia I felt as a q***r person, and how that follows you around. I really love surrealism, and wanted to utilize it in order to translate those feelings. The film ended up being kind of funny and absurd, in a way, and I honestly don’t really remember where the actual ideas came from in terms of the specifics. I just remember having to rewrite each of the hallucinations and surreal moments until they felt right." - Bridget Frances Harris

"With Bridget, I did feel like I was in really good hands. Obviously, this work deals with themes of s*xuality and personal identity, and I felt safe throughout the whole process. I was treated with great care, and so it was easy for me to go in and deal with these subjects that are very personal because I felt like everyone was really supporting me." -Virginia Alonso Luis

We kick off Pride month with our interview with "Places of Worship" director Bridget Frances Harris and star Virginia Alonso-Luis. Their film won the audience award at Cinema Femme Short Film Fest, and will be screening as part of the Palm Springs Short Film Fest.

"I hope that they see a simple story but with real human emotions. I feel like we kind of lost touch with this sense of ourselves. Relationships, big or small, are the big things in our lives, nothing really pauses. Life is about relationships and friendships, and that’s enough. I think that those kind of things are the stories to tell sometimes. So yeah, the simplicity of it, I think, hopefully will connect to people in a human way. That’s what I hope."
-Greta Bellamacina

"I think this film is universal, especially for women. As a woman, you could relate to any of these women onscreen. They are all at different phases of their lives, and I think that plays on the complexity of being a woman, the feelings that you feel during transitional moments, and how you support each other. And there also is a bit of letting go and moving on. We can all recognize these parts in ourselves through all of these women, and I hope that is also something people take away."
-Jaclyn Bethany

Today we feature our interview with Jaclyn Bethany and Greta Bellamacina about their film "Tell that to the Winter Sea." The film will be in select UK Cinemas starting on May 31st, and available to buy & rent on digital on July 1st on all major platforms, before premiering on Amazon Prime Video Direct on July 29th. It stars Greta Bellamacina, Amber Anderson, Tamsin Egerton, Jessica Plummer, Bebe Cave and Josette Simon, and is directed by Jaclyn Bethany. The film is co-written by Jaclyn and Greta. It is a must see! Make sure to seek it out.

“Nita and Zita’s gift they give the world is that their story inspires people to make more art. Because what they did was never for someone else. It was always their thing.” - Marci Darling

“ And I had been thinking about ways to connect more with my Judaism and to connect more to my ancestors. When Marci asked me, I knew this was the most perfect possible vehicle to do that.” - Dr. Sharon Gillen

Read interview: https://cinemafemme.com/2024/05/22/director-marci-darling-and-producer-dr-sharon-gillen-aim-to-rejuvenate-your-creativity-with-the-nita-zita-project/

Today we share our interview with director Marci Darling and producer Dr. Sharon Gillen about their film 💓

Currently the film is on its festival run, with a sold out screening at the New Orleans Museum of Art, and they won Best Documentary at the Truth or Consequences Film Fiesta, Best Cinematography from the Nice International Film Fest, and won Best Editing and Excellence in Filmmaking at the Los Alamos Film and Culture festival.

The story of Nita & Zita is a tale of the ultimate “outsider” artists, marginalized women who lived by their own rules, globetrotting jewish immigrants who blazed their own trail as dancers. It is a story of mystery, intrigue, glamour, stardom, poverty, loneliness, and most of all, the extraordinary love and devotion of sisters. This is also the story of two muses, who inspired countless artists to create their own art.

My Great Grandmother was a maid at the Chicago Athletic Club in the early 1900s. She would collect the cigar wrappers that were left behind and make them into beautiful art. She was also a Cubs fan…

05/08/2024

"But while “[subtext]” tells the story of one particular date in one particular restaurant, it really serves as a microcosm of our present culture. A discussion about where anxieties, hopes, and personal histories collide, it feels universal. It’s precisely the type of romantic-comedy that 2024 demands: one that centralizes on mental health without the pity treatment, doesn’t undermine anxieties or trauma for plot fulfillment, and finds the humor in moments of coping. That’s what romance is, vulnerability in spite of, not for the sake of, and “[subtext]” leaves plenty of room for laughs amidst its seizing moments of concern – shallow and thorough – and concludes with the guidance to give ourselves the same grace we give to others."

Thank you film critic and Cinema Femme contributor for these lovely words about "[subtext]," directed by Erin Brown Thomas (), and starring and written by Olivia Haller ().

"[subtext]" is the recipient of the Critic's Choice Award for the 2024 Cinema Femme Short Film Festival. This award is given by a film critic, and this year, the film was chosen by Peyton Robinson, film critic for RogerEbert.com, and contributor to Cinema Femme magazine.

Glam makes work about desire, consumerism, gender, s*x and food. Channeling their own feelings and desires into this work and examining our everyday performances.

"It Takes A Village" is a short film directed by Glamhag and written by Sarah Squirm and Glamhag. It is about two pregnant cult members rushing to make it in time for a big ceremony. It was finished in 2022 and has had a successful festival run including Final Girls Film Festival in Berlin and W***h Film Festival in Mumbai. It is now available to watch online via this website!

"Holy Trinity" is Glam’s feature debut about a Do******ix who can speak to the dead after huffing the contents of an aerosol can; the film was produced in part by Full Spectrum Features and Forager Films. Glam has adapted the film to be a scratch and sniff interactive film. Its debut sold out the Nitehawk theatre in Brooklyn June 2023.

In 2018 Glam played a friendly Do******ix named Amelia on Joe Swanberg’s Netflix Original Easy.
