We are excited to introduce "The Pieces," a short film produced and directed by Autumn Thompson (@itsautumnthompson) as part of our "Sincerely, Yours" program!
Autumn Thompson, a young college student is faced with a new challenge: she knows nothing about her ethnicity, her background, and her DNA. Sitting in a classroom, Autumn listens to her classmates proudly discuss their ethnicity and the richness of their cultures while telling stories of their families and traditions. Without the knowledge of her family's ethnic background, Autumn feels lost and envious of those who have a clear idea of their identity. As she starts to come to terms with a complicated childhood, she learns some surprising news that will define her story forever.

"This film’s end is not tied up with a bow, it ends with an ellipsis. But what’s important is that Winona has evolved. My life has evolved a lot since my twenties, and even in the past couple months. I’m getting married in July, and I know there are exciting adventures and even challenges ahead. But what I remember through practicing mindfulness is when a second goes by, it’s gone, and there are many seconds ahead, but I want to live in this second, now.”
Featured today is our latest personal essay elevating #MentalHealthAwareness by Cinema Femme Founder and Managing Editor Rebecca Martin. She examines Kelly Oxford’s directorial feature debut #PinkSkiesAhead starring Jessica Barden and how the film transported her to a real experience she’s had, and how she’s never seen that before onscreen, in that way.

Below are some quotes from those features:
"I want to empower people who are watching to talk about their own mental health stories so we can keep breaking down the stigma around it, because there really shouldn’t be any. Hopefully people can feel seen and represented on screen, like, ‘I’ve also experienced this and I’m not alone. I’m not crazy, and it’s okay to talk about it." @jorjanxiously "Withdrawals"
"I hope that they see a person. I hope if they don’t relate to me at all, they see me as a human and can empathize. Or maybe they see the reflection of somebody they know that deals with mental illness, or maybe they see themselves. But I hope that when they look at it, they either realize there is a lot of people similar to me, or perhaps not similar to me, but dealing with mental illness and the stigma that exists around it. Or perhaps they’ll feel less alone because they see a shadow of themselves. Representation is so important. I hope we all told the story well enough that it can resonate in the heart. And I think we have." @kate.marie.lapean "One Woman Hamlet"
"Lexi compares her manic self to Rita Hayworth’s character, Gilda, where she quoted her, “Every man I knew went to bed with Gilda . . . and woke up with me.” Represented on the screen, you’ll see mostly this “Gilda” character, but not often the other side, because that’s the side that’s not as fun to watch. It’s not a spin out, it’s a shut down. Seeing Lexi onscreen is so important and powerful, because it will start to normalize this mental illness, and show that bipolar is not “crazy”, it’s a treatable illness, and women with bipolar are people. We exist." @rebecca_a_martin “Take Me As I Am, Whoever I Am” "Modern Love"
