The call was of a burglary in progress when a man wearing a ski mask shot at police and fled on foot with a gun in his hand. He then fired shots at police and police returned fire.

The offender has been pronounced.

Police said, around 5:15 a.m., two men approached the garbage truck driver while he was working in an alley in the 900 block of South Homan Avenue, pulled out a gun, and announced a robbery.

The 28-year-old garbage truck driver, a concealed carry license holder, pulled out his own gun, leading to a shootout.

One of the would-be robbers, a 42-year-old man, was shot in the head and pronounced dead on the scene. His accomplice, a 20-year-old man, was shot in the neck and taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

Two men are in custody after a 63-year-old man was found unresponsive, bound with duct tape and an extension cord, and later died in Norwood Park Sunday night.

Chicago police sources say the two men are in police custody and both are migrants — one from Venezuela and the other from Ecuador. One of the men is in his early 20’s.

Chicago cops blocked city inspectors from entering a curious “Gift Room” filled with designer bags, Hugo Boss cufflinks, a personalized Mont Blanc pen and other ritzy goodies that were accepted by Mayor Brandon Johnson, according to a bombshell report.

The trove of pricey giveaways is part of an “unwritten arrangement” that dates back 35 years, under which mayors can just write down gifts they receive in a logbook and store some of them on the fifth floor of City Hall instead of reporting them to the Board of Ethics, according to the Office of Inspector General.

But the new report issued Wednesday outlines the numerous times investigators were rebuffed from learning more about the 236 gifts given to Johnson “on behalf of the city” since he took office.
