Why Understanding, Not Knowledge or Wisdom?
Explained through Thầy Nhất Hạnh and Pema’s perspectives:
1. Understanding Comes from the Heart
• According to Thầy Nhất Hạnh, understanding is not merely intellectual comprehension; it is the ability to see deeply into the essence of things, situations, and people. It is compassionate understanding—understanding with love and empathy.
• “Knowledge” refers to accumulated information, which may lack emotional depth. For example, you might know someone is suffering, but without true understanding (understanding), you cannot alleviate their pain.
Thầy said:
“Understanding is the greatest gift you can give to someone. It does not come from books but from your capacity to listen deeply and observe carefully.”
2. Understanding Is the Root of Compassion
• Pema Chödrön often highlights that compassion arises naturally from understanding the suffering of others. Without understanding, compassion remains a hollow concept.
• Wisdom (trí tuệ) might help distinguish right from wrong, but understanding connects us to others through an open heart. Pema once said:
“When we truly understand suffering, compassion naturally arises.”
3. Knowledge and Wisdom Don’t Always Lead to Transformation
• Knowledge is theoretical and does not guarantee inner change or meaningful action. For instance, you might know a lot about the principles of compassion, but without practicing understanding, you won’t experience transformation.
• Wisdom (wisdom) is closer to understanding, but it can sometimes feel abstract or disconnected from everyday life. Understanding, as Thầy Nhất Hạnh explains, bridges the gap between intellectual awareness and heartfelt action.
Thầy elaborated:
“Wisdom cannot exist without deep understanding of suffering and the ways to relieve it. Understanding is the root of love and the gateway to freedom.”
4. Understanding Is the Foundation for Right Action
• Both Thầy Nhất Hạnh and Pema emphasize that understanding is essential for skillful and compassionate action. Without deeply understanding a problem or a person, our actions might unintentionally cause harm.
• Thầy connects understanding to Right View in the Noble Eightfold Path. Only through understanding can we love and act without causing further suffering.
Why Understanding?
Understanding transcends both knowledge and wisdom because it embodies a holistic empathy that arises from the heart and mind working together. It comes from deep listening, mindful observation, and being fully present with others in their suffering. Understanding is the key to healing, reconciliation, and transformation, which is why both Thầy Nhất Hạnh and Pema consider it the foundation of true compassion and love.
