The walk-in hunting area and hunter management area programs have given hunters some great access. Without these programs, it wouldn’t be as easy to hunt those lands.

Don’t forget about the walk-in hunting areas The walk-in hunting areas around the state are providing some pretty good hunting access that would be tough to get onto if we didn’t have the walk-in program. If there’s ever a time to turn the checkbook and credit cards over to your better half, this is that time. It seems outdoor gear catalogs come in the mail every day, but this time of year, those catalogs don’t just sit on the end table. Now they call your name. They reach out to you with little papery hands, trying to convince you to open them up, pick out a few billon dollars-worth of gear and dial the toll-free number.

Hunting gear catalogs can be dangerous Picking up catalogs filled with hunting equipment is always dangerous, but never as dangerous as it is this time of year. “Plague is a serious bacterial infection that can be deadly for pets and people if not treated as soon as possible with antibiotics,” said Courtney Tillman, epidemiologist with WDH. “The disease can be passed to humans from ill animals and by fleas coming from infected animals. We are letting people know of the potential threat in the cat’s home area as well as offering a reminder about plague to people across the state.”

Ty Stockton in the Great Outdoors:

I built a shooting range in my yard when I first moved to my house. I set the backstop up at the bottom of one of the hills in my pasture, and I could shoot down at it from the top of another hill 100 yards away. It wasn’t ideal, though; the backstop hill was full of rocks, so ricochets were a big problem. I found a pile of 6×6 timbers and I lined the backstop area with those, and that worked until the cows started kicking rocks down from the top of the hill onto my ricochet-preventing timbers.

I finally finished my shooting range. Again. When I moved into my current house 12 years ago, the very first thing I did was to set up a backyard shooting range. Ty Stockton in The Great Outdoors:

About a month ago, my wife asked me if I wanted to do the 100-mile Tour de Prairie ride. I declined. I’ve done 100-mile bike rides in my younger days, but youth was a big factor in my decision to do them. The other factor was fitness. I’m not talking about general fitness. I think my lungs and my legs could still handle a 100-miler, but I’m absolutely certain my posterior could not.

Riding a bike for that long puts a lot of pressure on your sitting region, and you really need to build up to that. But it did get me thinking about the hunting season.

Bike hunting takes preparation, too Last weekend, my wife did the Tour de Prairie, a bike ride from Cheyenne to Chugwater. Most people who do that ride do it on road bikes, but Amy did it on a mountain bike. That’s impressive. Posted on June 30, 2022 by Ty Stockton in Great Outdoors // 0 Comments ...

Great Outdoors with Ty Stockton:

I love introducing my kids to the things I got to experience the first time with my dad. Things like fishing, hunting, hiking and camping were some of the best things my dad taught me how to do. Even better, there are so many different ways you can do those activities, when we went on our second, third, fourth, and later adventures, they still seemed like doing them for the first time.

Not all things you do with your dad are fun When you have kids, sometimes you get to do things that take you back to when you were your kids’ ages. Often that’s a good thing, but sometimes it’s not as great. Posted on May 31, 2022 by Ty Stockton in Great Outdoors // 0 Comments I love introduci...

Ty Stockton in the Great Outdoors:

I was out feeding the horses on Sunday morning, and a turkey vulture flew down into the pasture. As I watched, it landed just out of my view over the lip of a little rise.

I finished feeding the horses, but kept my eye on the spot where the bird had disappeared. Since it hadn’t taken off again yet, I hustled back into the house and grabbed my camera, then I started out into the pasture to try to get a good picture.

Ty Stockton in the Great Outdoors:

There’s truly something cathartic about the repetitive motion of casting a fly. The trickle of the water over rocks has healing powers of its own, and catching the occasional trout lends a feeling of accomplishment that further enhances the catharsis.

Fishing is therapy, and it’s the cheapest kind Seems like we haven’t yet really gotten back to normal since the pandemic. Things are still weird. We could all do with a little fly-fishing therapy. Posted on May 24, 2022 by Ty Stockton in Great Outdoors // 0 Comments There’s truly something cat...

If you’re at all serious about camping, you can spend a small fortune – or even a large one, for that matter – on camping gear. Every time you head for the hills, you evaluate all your equipment, and even some of the newest goodies can come up lacking.

Camping can get expensive if you let it I’ve talked before about my thoughts of breaking down and buying a recreational vehicle for camping. But even without an RV, camping can get pretty expensive. There’s a common perception floating around that grizzlies are aggressive defenders of their territory that will maul or kill a person if the bear is startled or threatened. It’s also commonly believed that black bears are skittish and shy and will run from trouble rather than stand and fight.

These generalities can lead to trouble.

Unemployment sometimes decreases in September as schools and colleges staff up for the start of a new school year. Governor Gordon reiterated that personal responsibility is essential. Even though there will be no statewide mask mandate, vaccination and mask usage can help students and staff minimize the ripple effects that illness and quarantining can have on Wyoming’s communities and economy. “Together we can keep people working, kids learning, businesses thriving and all the members of our families healthy,” the Governor said.

“We’re encouraged by the results of this one-time testing event and the related survey on vaccination,” UW President Ed Seidel says. “While the numbers are incomplete, they show that we’re beginning the semester in conditions that will allow us to proceed with in-person classes and activities. We’re counting on those who’ve tested positive and those with whom they’ve had contact to isolate and quarantine as required by the state. Those who haven’t yet been vaccinated and are medically able should strongly consider doing so.
