Our Story
Aether: Beta is a short-form, fully live-action sci-fi series about two teens, Tyler and Bernadette, who meet while playing a new VRMMORPG (Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). The story follows them as they play and deal with the demands of the real world. It also slowly uncovers a plot to usurp the game. In the wrong hands this technology could be deadly.
Aether, the game, is an adventure/quest style open world game. The game world is set in the distant future where the world is recovering from some sort of apocalyptic event, yet otherwise indistinguishable from our own. The game world is mainly player against environment or PvE in game style. This means the players, especially in the beta, are playing against elements in the game world, not each other. While PvP (player vs player) is possible in Aether it is strongly discouraged and most players avoid it. In the world of the game there are all kinds of weapons and most players carry some form for protection more than anything. Young players like our two leads are banned in the beta from having any form of gun. Also in the game world guns don’t work against young players. The style of the game is very period mixed. You might find people walking around near full Victorian or Steam Punk, to just wearing t-shirts and jeans (not common), to some kind of combo between medieval and para-military. The game is different from any other game that has come before it, in that it is a fully immersive world where you actually become the avatar. Think Matrix more than Ready Player One.
The story follows Tyler and Bernadette as they join the Beta, meet each other, fall in love, and have to deal with the struggles of everyday life. For them it is about finding balance between their parents in the real world and each other in the game. Tyler and Bernadette finally decide that they should take the next step in their relationship and meet in real life. But there are complications.
In addition to the struggles of our main characters and their families, the series also slowly reveals a dark plot surrounding the game. Powerful people seem to be interested in usurping the game and they will not let anything get in their way, as Tyler finds out late in the season. All of this is centered on a man with a dying daughter, and for her he will go to any length.
