Just as Whitetail and Mule Deer are in the states, Roebucks are the quintessential and most widely loved big game species in Europe.

The roebuck is the quintessential European big game species and as a “deer guy,” I really enjoyed chasing these captivating little creatures and learning about European deer culture.

The Mainframe and V***r series packs were my constant companion this year. From chasing Chamois in the Cantabrian mountains of Spain to packing out my Wyoming Bull Elk and a fat Colorado Muley, my Eberlestock packs handled everything I threw at them and more. I put on 3-5 years worth of “normal use” on them this year and they took it all in stride and made some awful packouts bearable.

2024 Colorado 3rd rifle Buck.

The goal on this hunt was to take my first mature mule deer buck, completely on my own; truly DIY from application to planning, to hunt and ex*****on.

Started by picking this unit and e-scouting with . I had about dozen spots to check out.

Plan was two start very wide, drive the entire unit but things changed as we arrived on the heels of one winter storm and right before another hit. We provisioned and got to the unit as quick as possible and set up camp.

Opening day we walked away from camp in the dark at 5 am. We had a pretty steep 600 foot climb then about a mile and a half hike to my main glassing spot.

Before an hour had elapsed I saw a doe and two fawns. Knowing it was mid November, I kept close tabs on them and about ten minutes later I saw the buck pop out, nose extended. I set up the spotter and could see he was a mature buck. He bedded.

We kept an eye on them and he was locked on to a doe and seemed like he would stay in his bed. He was at about 1600 yards.

I stayed calm, studied the terrain, made a plan and before long at all we were at 400 yards, the buck still bedded, rump towards us.

He hit the boxes, mature 4 point with good mass, eye guards, and a perfect opportunity. 10 minutes later he stood and I squeezed the trigger on my new 307 Alpine CT in 300PRC. 1 perfectly sent and he was dead in less than 25 paces.

It was bittersweet that our time in the mountains would end so soon. But it was just too perfect and a good opportunity on the buck I was after, under the circumstances I had set my sights on. A truly 100% DIY mule deer hunt that was the culmination of everything I have learned from friends and colleagues over the past 5 seasons.

With God’s help and all that I have learned I was able to pull off the smoothest and quickest hunt of my career. Now maybe I can be a little more picky and wait for that next level Buck. But this hunt was just about perfect. Glory to God and thanks to my family, another awesome season in the books.

It’s hard to believe my fall is already over! My last hunt of 2024 ended by 9 AM in on the opener, which is bittersweet. I was blessed to hunt some awesome places with some amazing people this fall and take 4 iconic western big game species, my first black bear, an antelope buck, a bull elk and a nice mule deer buck. I’m so blessed to have more adventures on the horizon, but for now it’s time to hangout with the family, enjoy the holidays and put in some quality office time to gear up for next year! It’s going to be another wild one!

2024 Wyoming General Bull. This trip was a dream come true and one of my all-time favorite hunts.

We hunted a few lower, easier access spots the first two days and saw about 8 times more grizz, wolves and other hunters than elk. So, with my sidekick and my local friend David Merrill, we headed deep into the backcountry on horseback.

We hit the weather and timing window perfect and got a spike camo setup far away from any other hunters just before a snow stormed rolled in. We studied our maps and made a plan.

We didn’t make it a mile from camp on the first morning before hearing 3-4 bulls ripping off around us. After putting eyes on this bull and seeing that he was a mature, smaller 6 point I decided to take the opportunity given. This was a general tag and only my second bull, I wasn’t being picky and he was a mature animal.

You can see the kill shots in my last reel. At 375 yards he absorbed 2 rounds from my 300 WM before a neck shot put him down for good.

Thankful for good friends, public lands and most of all Almighty God, without whom none of this would be possible.

When trying to find and judge a good speedgoat, quality , a stable tripod and the trusty are must have’s. For hunting, glassing and shooting it’s a tough combo to beat. The best optics in the world won’t help much if you find them atop sub-standard stabilization. The old Switchback XT still shoots! Unfortunately, this was the only fresh meat we partook in on my last trip to Alaska. Regardless, we were grateful. Ptarmigan is some of the best tasting meat on the planet!

Everything from expedition style hunts in Alaska, to day hunts for antelope on the plains, training rucks and catching flights through busy airports. Opening morning success on my best mule deer buck to date. Elk are cool, but I have confirmed, I am 100% a “deer guy.” If I had to hunt one animal the rest of my days it would be deer. I just finished a 5 day bear hunt with the @eberlestock / @rmef_official Team Elk pack. I have tried almost every brand of pack on the market at this point and, in my opinion, there is no such thing as the “perfect” pack. They all have strengths and weaknesses. But here are a few things I really like about this pack… It’s a feature-rich pack that has some user-friendly attributes I really love.
