Overseas basketball is unpredictable. Players sign contracts that teams can break overnight. A bad situation can wipe out a paycheck, a season, or even a career. The game off the court is just as important as the one on it.

This week’s newsletter covers the reality of playing internationally.

✅ The best players don’t always get the best opportunities.
✅ Politics, relationships, and dynamics decide who stays and who goes.
✅ Why some players get cut while others get protected
✅ How import spots shape roster decisions
✅ What players need to know about agents, contracts, and team politics
✅ The difference between a job offer and a trap

The business side of overseas hoops can make or break a career. If you are not prepared, you will learn the hard way.

This week’s newsletter breaks it all down and explains how the Overseas Famous Community will help players navigate these challenges.

If you have been through it, drop a comment. If you want to stay ahead, leave your email address then check your inbox.

Overseas basketball strips you down. It pulls you out of the comfort zones…past the polished safe spaces and throws you into a world where nothing is neatly packaged for you.

You land in a country where no one speaks your language…where your name isn’t on a jersey in the team store…where you’re just another import trying to prove you belong. And that’s when it happens… travel does what it’s meant to do. It breaks you open and forces you to see yourself in ways you can’t ignore.

Your flaws? They don’t get to hide behind routine or comfort. The things you spent years burying…doubts, insecurities, the cracks in your game and your mindset…suddenly become glaringly obvious.

But that’s where the growth happens. That’s where the real ones separate themselves. Because overseas… you either evolve or you go home.

As an Eagles fan like myself, this is everything. As an athlete, this is the standard. 🦅🏆

This is what it looks like when you give everything. The body aches, the exhaustion hits, the emotions pour out… but in your hands? The reward.

Moments like this don’t happen by accident. They’re built in the early mornings, the late nights, the days when no one is watching. The times you push past exhaustion, past doubt, past failure…because you know this feeling is worth it.

If you’re chasing greatness, wanting it is one thing…outworking everyone for it, that’s another.

Every year, players deal with late payments, contract loopholes, and teams that just stop paying altogether. And with the new FIBA rule starting in July 2025, players will be responsible for paying their agents directly—whether they’re getting paid or not.

So what happens when a team stops sending your check?

You still owe your agent.

You have zero leverage because pushing too hard might get you cut.

You can’t just walk away because you need the job.

This is the ugly side of overseas hoops, and it’s why we’re building a community to help athletes protect themselves.

What can you do if you don’t have negotiating power?
✅ Get every promise in writing (even if it’s just a text)
✅ Track payments and call it out immediately if there’s a delay
✅ Make sure your release paperwork states exactly what you’re owed
✅ Know when to push back and when to make noise

If you’ve been through this or know someone who has, drop a comment or DM. It’s time to change the game.

Some guys just need the right system to shine.

Look at Justin Edwards…struggled in college, went undrafted, and now he’s making a legit impact in the NBA as a rookie. He didn’t suddenly become more talented overnight. He just found a system that fits his game, a coach who believes in him, and a role that lets him play to his strengths. That’s the difference between being overlooked and thriving.

It’s the same overseas. There are guys buried on benches in Europe who could put up NBA numbers in the right situation. Maybe they’re in a league that doesn’t suit their style. Maybe they’ve got a coach who doesn’t trust them. Maybe they’re playing behind an established veteran and never get a real shot. The talent is there, it’s about being in the right spot at the right time.

That’s why so many overseas players bounce from country to country, team to team, looking for that perfect fit. And when they find it? That’s when everything clicks. The game slows down, the confidence skyrockets, and suddenly, that “role player” is putting up 25 a night.

Most hoopers at this level can go off in the right system. The real challenge isn’t talent, it’s finding the place that lets you be you.

When the Mavericks traded Luka, they didn’t just lose a player, they lost 700,000 followers overnight. That’s ticket sales, jersey buys, sponsorship deals, and a whole lot of global attention walking out the door.

Superstars aren’t just athletes anymore; they’re entire economies. Move a guy like Luka, and the ripple effect hits everything…team revenue, brand partnerships, even how many people care enough to watch a Tuesday night game in January.

Basketball is a business first. And the numbers don’t lie.

For athletes, the grind doesn’t end when the game does. You spend your whole life chasing one dream, sacrificing everything to compete at the highest level. Then one day, it’s over. And suddenly, you’re starting from scratch with no playbook, no structure and no clear path forward.

I know that struggle firsthand. One day, I was a pro basketball player. The next, I was just another guy in a suit, riding a train to a job interview that had nothing to do with sports, feeling completely lost.

Most athletes face this moment. The question isn’t if the transition will be hard...it’s how you’ll get through it. And the truth is, most of us are left to figure it out alone.

But what if we didn’t have to?

That’s exactly why we built this system designed by athletes, for athletes. A direct path forward that simplifies the post-career grind and helps you restart with purpose.

As athletes, it’s easy to forget just how much of an impact our small, everyday interactions can have on the people we meet. This story about Saquon Barkley is a perfect reminder of that. Even with all eyes on him, he took the time to stay humble, treat others with kindness, and make sure every interaction left a positive impression.

We have the power to shape how people see us…not just as athletes, but as people. Little gestures, like saying thank you or being mindful of how we interact, can leave a lasting mark on someone’s memory.

For those of us living and playing abroad, these moments can define how we’re remembered in communities far from home. Always err on the side of kindness, humility, and respect. You never know how much it might mean to someone.

As sports fans, we obsess over comparisons...Jordan vs. LeBron...Messi vs. Maradona. But it doesn’t stop there. How often do we catch ourselves comparing parenting styles, career paths, or even the “simpler days” of the past?

For overseas athletes, comparisons are a trap. Adapting to new styles of play...customs...and cultures is survival. What worked in one league...or one phase of life...might not work in another.

In this newsletter, we dive into the art of adaptation...staying curious, open-minded, and resilient in the face of constant change. Winning overseas is being able to navigate situations like corrupt officiating, adjusting to life in a foreign city, or building relationships without speaking the language.

You need to be able to thrive in a world that’s always evolving.

And soon, we’re building something for athletes to do just that...Stay tuned.

Social media really would have been a magical place if I was able to document my life overseas. Overseas athletes now have no idea how good they’ve got it. We were out there raw-dogging life with Nokia phones and digital cameras, and all I’ve got are some blurry photos and questionable memories.

Let’s be real…my content would’ve been better than my game highlights.

Shoutout to this professor from for casually listing all the ways they’ve almost checked out of this life. This hits WAY too close to home for us overseas athletes. We’ve dodged rogue mopeds in Italy and eating ‘mystery meat’ from a street vendor in Kosovo because, well, YOLO…we too like to live dangerously.

Most of us have at least one ‘I almost died doing something ridiculous overseas’ story. Like the time I was within five feet of poisonous bites in Australia or being scolded by the local street gang after a tough loss.

Overseas fam, drop your close-call stories below. Let’s hear who’s got the wildest tale of survival (and questionable decision-making). 🏀🌍💀

Happy Friday!

FIBA’s new rule on agent fees puts more responsibility in the hands of players to manage their careers. This week’s newsletter breaks it all down:

What the rule means

How to plan smarter contracts

Why this shift could be the wake-up call some players need.
