Drive through River Arts District - Asheville, NC: 30 December 2024
We took our first trip to the Asheville area since hurricane Helene on December 29 and 30, 2024. We were able to tour the Biltmore (by candlelight decorated for Christmas, which was amazing) and also bring our tourist dollars to a hotel and several restaurants in downtown Asheville, which was good. Asheville retailers are very keen and thankful to have tourists returning to the area after many locations were closed for about two months.
Before departing Asheville on December 30, we drove down and through the River Arts District, which had experienced a flood 50 feet over the normal water levels at the end of September (2024) when Hurricane Helene hit the area and devastated multiple communities in western North Carolina. This is a video I took using the car mount in our camera about 5:20 PM.
This was a very sobering experience, and reminded me of times when I saw tornado damage after an F5 tornado in the Midwest, where I’ve lived most of my life. I have witnessed dramatic tornado damage scenes twice, once in Greensburg, Kansas in 2007 and once in Moore, Oklahoma in 2013. Here are links to Flickr photo albums from both of those experiences:
August 2013 in Moore, Oklahoma, three months after an F5 tornado direct hit:

This flood in Asheville was literally of Biblical proportions. We spoke with restaurant and hotel employees who had been in Asheville through Hurricane Helene and afterward, and the impact of the trauma was still very evident.
There are numerous nonprofit organizations which continue to assist people, families and businesses in Asheville and elsewhere in Western North Carolina. Here is a link to a Google Doc of recommended and verified organizations if you are interested in making donations. This area is still very
I recorded a new episode in my “Wisdom with Wes” series video yesterday morning before school. Using AI recommendations from Descript.com, I titled this “Episode 42 Advent vs. Easter: Why Christians are Truly Easter People.”
Since Facebook now seems to “down rank” posts that include links, I will NOT include a link to the YouTube version or anything else I mentioned. But you can Google “Wisdom with Wes” on YouTube and find other episodes. Here’s the description:
In today's episode, recorded on December 16, 2024, Wes Fryer discusses the significance of Advent and Easter in the Christian faith. He explains the concept of 'Easter people' versus 'Advent people' and shares personal experiences and reflections on the spiritual journey during the Christmas season. The video includes a mix of weekend experiences, scriptural references, and cultural observations, ending with a hopeful message for all viewers, whether they are followers of Jesus or not.

Evening Hike
Evening hike with the dogs at Stevens Creek. It’s amazing the difference a couple fall weeks make in the quantity of leaves off the trees and now on the ground. It’s like we have x-ray vision to see through the forest! We love living on the Piedmont in North Carolina!#GoOutside #HikeNC #hiking #GoldenRetriever
Today my iPhone says it's 32 degrees (F) in Charlotte, North Carolina! It's my first day of this fall semester at school to wear my down jacket as well as my leather flight gloves with wool inserts. I've had these since UPT at Reese AFB in Lubbock, Texas in the winter of 1993-94. These are the exact same kind of gloves my dad had as a US Air Force pilot, and I remember borrowing from him from time to time in high school, growing up in Manhattan, Kansas.
These leather flight gloves were the subject of my second "Wisdom with Wes" episode, which I shared earlier this year on February 7, 2024! I also shared this video to YouTube at the time:
