This November we're celebrating our veterans and our small business owners! These folks are what make living in the Lake Norman area so great. Check out the great story about a young mom who started her own Little Boys clothing line. And check out the great leather products available from a small business owner with an eye for design. Plus we have some great holiday gift ideas from a local veteran who makes handmade toys. Instead of featuring beautifully displayed Thanksgiving tables, we're turning to the areas in the home where friends and family gather after the big meal to enjoy some fun and games. It's all inside this issue of CURRENTS and it's all about Lake Norman. Pick up your copy today or visit us online at LNCurrents.com

Today I want to shine a light on Huntersville Lost and Found Pets (a public group right here on Facebook). They, along with my neighborhood Facebook group, served as another beautiful reminder of the incredible community we are blessed to be a part of.

I was helping a friend by dog-sitting while he was out of town. Everything was smooth sailing for 4 lovely days. And then, on the final day (of course), THIS joker ⬇️(mugshot below) decided to have himself an adventure. Since I was at work, I had no idea until several hours after his escape (yes, I'm rethinking the doggie door 😬). The 2 1/2 hours after getting home were spent canvasing my neighborhood while actively trying to talk myself out of the gut wrenching panic of "what ifs". Feeling hopeless, I posted on my neighborhood FB page pleading for any information or help. BEST DECISION EVER. The responses on that post led to a connection and post on Huntersville Lost and Found Pets and a short while later, I had my friend's dog back safe and sound. He was happy, tired and satisfied with his big day out. I was a wreck. Aside from a massive headache, need for a large glass of wine and a shower, the takeaway was this...

1. There are good people around us that care and will go out of their way to help in big and little ways.
2. Despite its many "issues", social media can be and IS a powerful tool for good.
3. Chip your pet AND make sure your contact information is current and accurate.
4. ID tags/collars are a must.
5. Lean into and connect with your community. We are all better for it. I highly recommend joining this group or one like it in your area. It truly takes a village. And I'm so grateful for this one.
6. Pay it forward whenever and however you can. Sometimes you will be the light and sometimes, you will find yourself desperately needing one. Helping doesn't have to come in the form of a grand gesture. Sometimes just caring and looking out for one another is all it takes. 💛

Good to know! Stay safe and stay off the lake for now, LKN.

A MESSAGE FROM DUKE ENERGY ON LAKE SAFETY AFTER HURRICANE HELENE:

While lake levels are coming down, high water conditions are creating a number of hazards including floating debris.

Boaters and lake neighbors are encouraged to stay off the lakes until lake levels return to seasonal targets. If lake neighbors can safely recover their floating docks or piers, Duke Energy encourages residents to do that.

Floating debris like broken docks, trees, branches, leaves and mulch often form large matted floating areas on lakes and that can create hazards to the public. Boaters can also create wakes that impact neighboring properties.

Following high water events, Duke Energy will attempt to remove unclaimed large man-made floating debris from its reservoirs and boat ramps as quickly as possible to try and mitigate potential navigational hazards. Due to the anticipated volume of debris and the historic nature of this storm, it may take longer than usual for Duke Energy to respond to reports of debris.

Lake neighbors can report non-emergency floating debris to the Duke Energy Lake Services team by calling 1-800-443-5193 or emailing [email protected]. It is most helpful if we are provided photos as well as specific addresses or coordinates, so we know the location of the debris.

Please consider posting the below text and attached photo on your social media platforms as we work to keep lake neighbors safe:

Stay aware and stay safe, Friends. There will be regular alerts through Friday. And if you don’t follow Brad Panovich Meteorologist, I highly recommend.

Please don't focus on the center. Focus on the impacts. I get so many people saying, "Looks like it will miss us or this location or that". Look where the impacts are going, not the center! It should also be re-emphasized that Helene is a very large hurricane. In fact, comparing the system with previous hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico over the past couple of decades, Helene is at the upper bound in terms of size. As a result, storm surge, wind, and rainfall impacts will extend far away from the center and well outside the forecast cone, particularly on the east side. In addition, the fast forward speed at which Helene moves inland will result in a deep pe*******on of strong winds over parts of the southeastern United States, including strong gusts over the higher terrain of the southern Appalachians. Accordingly, a higher-than-normal gust factor is indicated in the official forecast, while Helene is inland.
