🏀 Layoff no problem for Gaston College basketball as it wins 13th straight game

Nearly three weeks off did nothing to stop the winning momentum of the Gaston College basketball team Tuesday night as the Rhinos rolled to a 100-65 win at the Converse University developmental team.

The victory was the Rhinos' 13th straight after a season-opening loss to the top-ranked team in the country and improved Gaston College to 13-1.

"Obviously it's good to get one under your belt after coming off such a long break," first-year Rhinos coach Benny Moss said. "I was really pleased with the contributions we got from everybody."

Playing its first game since Dec. 18, Gaston College led for all but 1 1/2 minutes of Tuesday's road game.

Sake Express in Belmont is closing.

On Jan. 24, 2025, after 14 years of service from 675 Park Street, Sake Express will close its current Belmont, N.C., location.

Owners Lisa Nguyen and Linda Nguyen say that this isn't the end for Sake in Belmont; rather, it's an opportunity for change and growth in the burgeoning city. They are currently searching for a prominent, permanent location.

Although they will not have a presence in the City of Belmont temporarily, they look forward to returning with a new building and the same great flavors that customers have come to love. They also invite Sake fans to visit their location in Gastonia, N.C., during this brief hiatus.

This Week's Top Story: Cramerton gets new sculpture and pocket park

Cramerton was gifted a sculpture in 2018, but lacked the $100,000 needed to install it. That money has since been raised through private donations, and the sculpture has been placed in a new pocket park near Riverside Drive in Cramerton.

The sculpture was originally installed at the corner of Trade and Tryon in Charlotte in 1983. Created by artist John Rietta, the sculpture was moved in 2018 so the plaza where it was located could be renovated.

🏀 Gaston College wins 11th straight to cap an emotional week for head coach

Gaston College's basketball team won its 11th straight game on Sunday afternoon with a come-from-behind 93-85 victory over Cleveland Community College at Gastonia's Ashbrook High School.

The Rhinos (11-1) never lead in the first half, trailed by as many as 10 points and were behind 45-40 at the break.

Gaston College took its first lead two minutes into the second half and closed the nip-and-tuck contest on a 12-3 surge after Cleveland Community College went ahead 82-81 with 2:49 to play.

"In the second half, we did a better job of keeping them in front of us and making them earn their points," first-year Rhinos head coach Benny Moss said. "We've just got to continue to focus on one possession at a time, one game at a time and worry about the process. If we can continue to do that, the results will follow."

Freshman E.J. Joyner (20 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals), freshman Jozohn Price (17 points, 7 rebounds), sophomore Tyheim Love (15 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists), sophomore Jordan Brown (14 points, 4 rebounds), sophomore Judah Ravenell (12 points, 12 rebounds) and freshman Kayleb Coles (9 points, 6 rebounds) led a balanced Gaston College attack.

🛸 Men from Mars invade Gaston County

Okay, maybe not. But drones were sighted last Thursday night in Bessemer City, Stanley, Cramerton, and Belmont.

“They’re not small aircraft. Small aircraft do not contort, change shapes and change colors. They do not dart across the sky,” says Bessemer City resident Jennifer Stiles. She continues, “I don’t feel like it’s a threat, but I think they know a little more than they’re letting on. And I don’t know, I think it’s exciting.”

🏀 Gaston College basketball wins, has its first 10-game winning streak in 53 years

Gaston College has its first 10-game winning streak in 53 years after Sunday's workmanlike 84-65 victory over the Newberry developmental team at that school's Eleazer Arena.

The Rhinos improved to 10-1 with their 10th straight win since losing at No. 1-ranked Davidson-Davie Community College on Nov. 2 in their 2024-25 season opener.

"It feels good," first-year Gaston College coach Benny Moss said. "I'm happy for the guys because they're working hard every day to get better. They're staying focused one game at a time. If we can continue to stay focused on the process and not the results, I think the results will continue to follow."
