SOS! Already this year we're over capacity. KCHA needs your help - and your understanding.

We have ZERO space. We have dogs in bathrooms and offices again. We have dogs doubled and TRIPLED in kennels. Every puppy cage is filled with multiple pups, too.

We want to help as many animals as we can, but we only have so much space. We can't just magically create another row of 50+ kennels. And even if we could, we'd fill it in a week and be in the same place again 😭

While we are the biggest shelter in WV, we still have a maximum capacity. And we've surpassed that capacity, once again taking kennels away from our spay/neuter clinic's capacity to do more surgeries.

‼️KCHA can only take in critically injured or sick animals at this time‼️

We need to place the animals we currently have to create more space.

How can you help?

⭐️ We need fosters to give dogs a break from shelter life.

⭐️⭐️ We need adopters to open their hearts and homes for another pet - we have a "pick your price" where you can adopt for as low as $1!

⭐️⭐️⭐️ We need volunteers to help us show these shelter animals lots of love and care! You can help by walking dogs, handing out treats, sitting with a lonely dog in the lobby, helping with laundry - so many things!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We need people who find strays to be aware that we likely won't have room for the animal right away - we can make an appointment for a later day and save a kennel when it opens and give you supplies (like a crate to safely separate from other animals) to tie you over until a space opens up.

We hate this, you all hate this - but the solution is for us to work together. If you find an animal, be aware that you may need to temporarily house it until we can find a space for them 💔

❄️STRIPE OF HEAVY SNOW - 10:40 am - see the dark blue band ? That’s HAMMERING SNOW right there ! Sliding east. That’s a quick fluffy inch passing across. Look at the sharp cutoff west of Huntington. Amazing that was in the models all along. This may “backfill” visually (enhanced light snow on west of Huntington) this afternoon but everything from that dark blue stripe east has a few hours of decent snowfall rates. 🚨🚨🚨🚨CANCELED: The 2025 Wedding Expo scheduled for Sunday, January 19, 2025, from 1pm -4pm here in the Charleston Convention Center is canceled due to the current weather conditions, along with decreasing temperatures throughout the night. The weather warnings from the National Weather Service, in effect from 01/18, Sunday 1 am thru 8 am Monday, 01/19 throughout the region have caused concern for safe travel tomorrow.

STRAY - Cato Park (Charleston) but was also posted in St Albans.

One of Charleston's Humane Officers picked this fella up last night. He's currently crashing at her place until we have an open kennel 🥺

Do you recognize this fella? If you believe this is your dog please comment and we will coordinate with the Humane Officer!

‼️‼️ Edit: I will post this here too - we are completely out of space at our shelter. We have dogs doubled and tripled in kennels, in offices, in bathrooms.

When we say we can't take an animal in, it's not because we don't care. We always care 💔 but we can't create more space out of nothing.

Please be aware if you pick up a stray, we likely will NOT have room to house them. We will offer an appointment and a crate for you to temporarily house them until a kennel opens up.

We know it's not ideal - we don't like being in this situation any more than you all do. I promise. Please just work with us and be kind as we try to create more space with adoptions ❤️‍🩹
