WINTER STORM WATCH for this area from late Monday through Wednesday mid day. The NWS language says 3"-8' but the 8" is much more likely in the high terrain and far more people will see more like that 3" .... working on the maps for this afternoon. This will be a SUPER HARD forecast but here's what you need to know:
1) Starts as snow late Monday, early Tuesday. Wintry mix during the day Tuesday then back to some snow Tuesday night.
2) Warmer air tucks into this "up the middle" which is usually Pikeville to Charleston on the map... that's the "warm wedge" we talk about where you see less snow always.
3) Counties in S WV and SE KY may see more rain which lends itself to flood concerns more than snow
4) A LOT of this will melt on contact Tuesday but some won't and it will be slushy, heavy-weight, wet snow on Tuesday mainly.
5) ALL of this can change .... once again we are on the edge of good temps for snow vs melting. The real good snow formation zone is WAY HIGH UP meaning so much can happen to the flakes on the way down... they can melt, refreeze, clump together, etc. THAT'S the part we are trying to figure out for posting amounts.
ALL OF THIS POINTS TO SLOW DRIVING TUESDAY and in the WV Mountains perhaps not driving at all. You'll see new watches and warnings go up to our east as well later today I'm sure.

TUESDAY shenanigans.... see THIS is why it's hard to figure how much snow. See the "warm wedge" of rain? OUR model expands the rain and it's just wet all afternoon. BEFORE we get to forthcoming snow, we still have high water in spots. Likely there is more high water than the actual rivers shown here. At least we aren't adding rain until we get rain and snow on Tuesday. Going real slow on the snow forecast as it will be 37-40 and snowing so figuring out the melting is a huge issue. Thus - watch out for maps focusing only on the high end. We all know it's gonna snow some - the rest is an ego game among weather pages. We want to get the impact right!
