FULL-TIME PHOTOJOURNALIST- THE GAZETTE- CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA
The Gazette, based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is seeking an experienced photojournalist for its award-winning photography team. This position is responsible for visual storytelling at the state’s second largest newspaper and digital properties. The ideal candidate will be comfortable covering a variety of subject areas including news, sports and features using both photography and video
This role blends daily assignments and projects. It requires strong collaboration and planning with our reporting staff and editors so that we illustrate deep, contextual stories for our audience via photography and video. We believe in giving you time to discover your own stories found in the field, which can turn into photo galleries or other multimedia projects.
Our ideal candidate is highly motivated and able to quickly adjust to a variety of settings and topics. They should be comfortable collaborating with newsroom staff to create high impact content with deep contextual meaning. The ideal candidate will be highly curious, highly accurate and ethical and want to try new things. You’ll be as passionate about daily assignments as you are about the medium and long-range projects. You’ll seek to continuously develop and refine your skills. Our ideal candidate maintains an awareness of news important to the community and will also be a highly professional ambassador of our brands.
Our ideal candidate is comfortable using social media tools to make sure their work is reaches our audiences quickly and in a variety of ways. This is a fast-paced position in a newsroom that thinks big. Our photojournalists work shifts to meet the flow of the news, including nights, weekends and holidays on a rotating basis as well as some regional travel.
Our ideal candidate can juggle tasks simultaneously, be comfortable working as part of a team and work well under tight deadlines. This candidate will work in a scheduled rotation to include day, evening and weekend shifts.
Our organization:
Our news operation is based in Cedar Rapids and is focused on both digital and print platforms. Our company has a strong tradition of being independent and is employee-owned. The majority of our news team is focused on enterprise reporting, and we have a strong spirit of collaboration with other news outlets. While we’re focused in Cedar Rapids -- Iowa’s second-largest city – we have reporters in Des Moines and Iowa City. The region is rich with things to do outside of work hours.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Ideal candidate will be a flexible, self-motivated, creative go-getter and problem solver who works well on a team and has excellent communication and team building skills. Candidate must be highly organized, and exceptionally strong photographer. Strong photo and video editing skills are required, and experience with digital CMS and publishing is preferred. Candidate must be committed to accuracy. Must have a strong understanding of storytelling on multiple platforms. Licensure for drone photography preferred.
A Bachelor’s degree in photojournalism, photography or related course of study is expected, or equivalent technical experience. Prior news photography/video experience, including sports, is required. A pre-employment drug screen is required. Candidate must be company insurable and have acceptable driving record.

The coronavirus pandemic affected the seasons of college and high school athletes but there were still moments of athletic determination to capture.
Life goes on, even as the coronavirus pandemic began to affect Iowans. The Gazette visuals staff was in the field, safely, to capture great moments of people helping each other and living their lives.
North Linn is heading to the championship round in Class 2A basketball at the girls' state tournament. They defeated West Hancocok, 61-46, at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Game time tomorrow is 5 p.m.
