This work has been inspiring to me since I performed in an intercollegiate band in North Dakota. It was also a conversation topic when I was a conducting intern and it was one of the two works I liked on the program. Because of the inspiration I drew from this work, I composed a solo piano work that incorporated a dumbek rhythm and a traditional melody. Since then, I have again become enamoured with music from Spain, Brazil, and more of all Mexico. So, I began composing a piece that I hope will mirror traditional Spanish music. It is a malagueña scored for orchestra.
