VASSAR CLOSES OUT 2024 PORTION OF SCHEDULE WITH 6-2 RECORD: The Vassar Vulcans boys varsity basketball team closes out the 2024 portion of their schedule with a robust 6-2 record. They will start New Year on January 8 on the road at Reese (5-3). We wish the Vulcans – and all teams in the region – a safe and restful Holiday season. GREAT SEASON ENDS FOR HARBOR BEACH: While the outcome may not have been what the Pirates hoped for, let's give a round of applause to the Harbor Beach varsity football team. While they fell to Fowler in the regional finals Saturday, this District Champion team was undefeated in the regular season. They embody the great tradition of Harbor Beach football. NOUVEL END REGULAR SEASON AT 8-1: TOP MANISTIQUE 28-16: The Nouvel Panthers varsity football team rolls into the MHSAA Playoffs next week with an 8-1 regular season record following their 28-16 home victory over Manistique on Friday.

This is the Panther’s first eight-win regular season since the team earned a berth in the state final in 2017. At this writing, Nouvel ranked seventh in Division 8 playoff points, which, depending on the brackets, may play a role in securing home-field advantage during the playoffs. The top 32 teams in each division make the playoffs.

The announcement of the qualifiers and first-round playoff pairings is at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, on the “Selection Sunday Show” on FanDuel Sports Network and its website –https://fanduelsportsnetwork.com.

NOUVEL TOPS CARROLLTON, KEEPS PERFECT RECORD INTACT: The Nouvel varsity football team improved to 5-0 on Friday with a 38-12 home victory over Carrollton.

With the win, the Panthers retain their hold on second place in the state in MHSAA Playoff Points in Division 8 with 36.8, behind only Riverview Gabriel Richard’s 38.4.

Using a balanced offensive attack, the Panthers rolled up 281 total yards – 148 passing and 133 on the ground – while holding Carrollton to 121 and allowing only four first downs. Nouvel held the Cavaliers scoreless until the fourth quarter, by which time the Panthers built up a 38-point margin.

Drew Carlson had a strong game at quarterback for the Panthers filling in for an injured Ian Ziegelmann. Carlson was 5/8 passing for 75 yards and four of those completions were for touchdowns; two to Parker Kingsbury, and one each to Sean Foley and Lance Karwat.

John Carlson and Owen Vance each added a touchdown and rushed for 77 and 43 yards respectively.

Jack Wilson paced the Panther defense with four tackles, five assists, a sack, and a stop behind the line of scrimmage. John Carlson added five tackles and two assists while Christian Lopez added four tackles and an equal number of assists.
Next Friday Nouvel celebrates Homecoming at Boyd Field. Kickoff against Hemlock (1-7) is at 7:00 PM. Look for details on the festivities next week. Go Panthers! Click the collage for a gallery of game pictures.

NOUVEL IMPROVES TO 3-0 WITH WIN OVER VALLEY LUTHERAN: In a battle of two undefeated teams, Nouvel defeated crosstown TVC conference rival Valley Lutheran 35-6 at Boyd Field on Friday.

The win moves the Panthers record to 3-0 on the young season. They entered the game ranked eighth in the state in Division 8 according to the Michigan High School Football Coaches poll and the Detroit Free Press rankings. Click the collage to see the Nouvel pictures from the game.

EPBP BASEBALL EARNS TROPHY IN NOUVEL TOURNAMENT: Congratulations to the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port varsity baseball team that Saturday won Nouvel Catholic Central’s 30th Anniversary baseball tournament. The Lakers topped Nouvel 7-1 in the opening game and edged Valley Lutheran 4-3 to take the trophy. Here is a galley of pictures from game one against Nouvel. Congratulations, Lakers.

MILLINGTON VARSITY BASEBALL TAKES TWO FROM NOUVEL: The Millington boys varsity baseball team traveled to Nouvel Monday and took both ends of the doubleheader, defeating the Panthers 7-0 and 11-1. The victories move the Cardinals season record to 16-9 as they head into a contest against Garber later this week. HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY TO ALL SPORTS MOMS! While Moms may not be on the field of play, their hearts are always in the game. On this Mother’s Day, we salute you all for your dedication, sacrifice, and love that keeps our student-athletes striving and succeeding on and off the field.

Each year on this day, I choose a local team and take player portraits as a surprise gift for that team’s Moms - my little symbolic gesture of thanks to my Mom and all of the Moms who give so much and ask for so little in return. This year we feature the Heritage varsity lacrosse team.

CARROLLTON SWEEPS NOUVEL IN TWIN BILL: In a Saginaw-area match-up, Carrollton took two on the road at Nouvel Thursday. The Cavaliers won 6-4 in the first game and 6-1 in the second.
