Meet the team! This week we’d like to introduce you all to Geoffrey Burk. Geoff has been with us from the very beginning. He helps ride and keep the horses in shape, assists CJ in training, helps out at shows, he does renovations and building at the ranch, and so much more. We hope to have him showing on a horse sometime this show season. We are lucky to have him on the team and so very thankful to have him with us on this journey.

My dad had not ridden a horse in about 50 years. Sweet Fendi spent her day Sunday getting him back in the saddle. She’s the absolute sweetest mare anyone could ask for. We are so lucky to have found her in the kill pen and brought her back to life. She is one in a million.

Meet the team! This week I would like to introduce myself. My name is Brandi and I am the co-owner of the ranch. You’ll mostly see me behind the scenes making social media posts, videoing training sessions, figuring out the right nutrition for each horse so they achieve their potential, and loving on all of them like the amazing animals that they are. CJ trains the horses and I get the pleasure of loving and showing or competing on them. I am also the one focusing on rehabilitation and conditioning for our kill pen rescue horses. I love watching the transformation as these horses literally come back from the edge of death. It’s such an honor to be a part of the journey with these horses and to be able to witness all of their many accomplishments.

Meet the team! Each week we will introduce you to a member of the ranch. It’s only fitting to start with our trainer. CJ Brewer has been working with horses since December of 2016. He has a natural ability that only some people are lucky enough to be blessed with. While still young in his journey as a trainer, when compared to some, he has proven his abilities through trials and tribulations, small battles, and huge victories over the past few years. It’s important to note that he is responsible for training our kill pen rescue, Fendi, for showing and helping her achieve success in the show ring. He is also well versed in breaking young horses, teaching collection and balance, and helping to fix problems such as bolting in broke horses. He’s not afraid to get down to the source of the issue, whatever that may be. Our horses are lucky to have him and would be the first to tell you how they love him if they could.

It’s been awhile since we’ve posted. A lot has changed around the ranch. We have two new members of the heard; Sakari, a 2 year old paint filly who was pulled from a kill pen in Kemp, Texas and Waylon, an 8 year old brown gelding adopted from Blazes’s Tribute Equine Rescue in Jones, Oklahoma. Sakari is growing and getting big with great nutrition and Waylon is continuing his training as a ranch riding and roping horse. We are so excited to have both of them and can’t wait to see what they accomplish. Updates to come!

“Do you give the horse its strength or clothe its neck with a flowing mane? Do you make it leap like a locust, striking terror with its proud snorting? It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength, and charges into the fray. It laughs at fear, afraid of nothing; it does not shy away from the sword. The quiver(H) rattles against its side, along with the flashing spear and lance. In frenzied excitement it eats up the ground; it cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds.” Job 39:19-24

Legacy was saddled for the first time today. This 2 year old filly by Corona White Chex out of RW Ironcor Calynx has a bright future ahead of her in the show ring. She did not offer up a buck at all. She acted like a seasoned pro. We are excited for her 3 year old season next year.

Words cannot describe how incredibly proud we are of this mare. The progress she’s made over the last 15 months is nothing short of remarkable. People thought we were crazy for pulling her from the kill pen and planning to show her. In hindsight, maybe we were. Here she is though, she made it. Fendi is proof that good nutrition, the right supplements, specialized training, and a little love can change a horse’s life. This mare is something special.

15 months ago this horse was scheduled to ship for slaughter. Today, she left the OQHA/AQHA Redbud Spectacular with a 5th place and 4th place finish. She handled herself so well among some of the best and most seasoned amateur halter horses. We are so proud of how far she’s come. She is something truly special.

We are spending this weekend at the OK State Fairgrounds for the OQHA/AQHA Redbud Spectacular. This is Fendi’s first AQHA sanctioned event. We are so proud of this horse and how far she’s come. She did great in round 1, and we are excited for round 2 on Sunday.

Hey everyone!
Haven't done a post in a minute so figured I would let everyone know we are still kicking. We do have a spot open for training if your interested in that. We are getting Fendi ready for show season at the moment. She will be competing in June. She has started gaining her muscle back and shedding her holiday weight. Thank you to everyone who continues to support us and look forward to seeing everyone down the road this year!

We aren’t used to weather like this in Oklahoma, the windchill today is -20 with snow covering the ground, and more coming over the next couple of days. Being snowed in may sound great to some people... watch Netflix, drink coffee, curl up in a blanket... That’s not case for those of us taking care of animals. We had to set alarms and get up throughout the night to break ice inside the barn. The water in their stalls is freezing within one hour. It’ll be like that again tonight, no sleep. They come first. At least we are only walking to the barn and back. Our herd is wrapped up in blankets, or coolers, Creek even has on a slinky to stay warm. My heart goes out to the cattle ranchers out in this weather trying to save lives and warm up babies by any means necessary. I’ve seen pictures from so many friends with calves in the floor boards of the truck, with heating lamps on them, or wrapped up in blankets. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all! We’re praying you all get through this with no loss!

Creek came back to us in May of 2020 after his new owner started having some behavioral issues with him. It was thought that maybe he needed a training refresher. After riding him a couple of times, it seemed to us that it was more of physical pain. We took him to our favorite vet, Dr. Kayla Devous, at Interstate Equine Hospital where we found that due to loss of muscle tone and weight loss the vertebrae in his spine had started to rub each other when riding, causing serious pain. It wasn’t quite kissing spine, but that’s where we were headed. His new owner needed a horse that could be ridden on a cattle ranch, and Creek wasn’t going to be able to do that at the time. So, we purchased him back. Over the past few months he has been started on Superior Equine Senior, alfalfa cubes, free choice hay, and turned out on pasture. He’s greatly enjoyed being a spoiled rotten old man. He has finally put on enough weight to start conditioning again. This week he’s started on Brazwell Muscle Mass and as soon as the round pen dries up enough we will begin lunging with side reins, on inclines, and backing up hills to increase the muscles in his spine. Then, a trip back to Dr. Devous for some updated x-rays. My hope is to have my boy back at jackpots turning barrels this summer. Can’t wait to see what this this old man still has in him.

One thing we’ve realized through our work with horses is that you must always continue learning. There is always room for improvement. I (Brandi) have been going to clinics with Cheryl West for about 3 years now. I could not ask for a better riding instructor and mentor. Her knowledge and teachings are invaluable to me. Fendi has about 15 REAL rides on her, so yesterday we decided to take her for a lesson with Cheryl. The idea was to have Cheryl knit pick our training, and tell us where we can improve. This was Fendi’s first ride away from our ranch. She did amazing. She was cool, calm, and collected the whole time. She is truly something special and we cannot wait to see what the future holds for this mare.

Earlier this week, Lefty and his rider, Geoffrey, were riding in the pasture at their place when something spooked Lefty. He began bucking violently, throwing his rider. Today, Lefty and Geoffrey came to the ranch. Geoffrey works on a cattle ranch and needs his horse for working and checking cattle. Frankly, they both needed their confidence built back up after the events from earlier in the week. We spent about 3 hours in the round pen with Lefty today, making sure that Geoffrey understood the exercises and how to get what he needed out of his horse. I think we were all really impressed with the progress Lefty made today. Geoffrey will have to keep working with Lefty and continue boosting his confidence, but Lefty was a different horse when he left here. Thank you so much Geoffrey for trusting us with not only your horse, but your own safety. We know you two will continue to make progress and chase those cows together. If you have issues with your horse that you’d like to work on, or need help training, please feel free to message us anytime!

“It’s absolutely mind boggling if you think about it.

Your horse gets absolutely nothing out of being competitive for you. Not a darn thing. Of course horses are bred for specific jobs, or they’re bred to be athletic to a certain degree. However, horses don’t wake up thinking about chasing cans, or cows, or flying over jumps.

They have no idea how much money is added to the pot. They have no idea that this is a qualifier. They have no idea that this is the short go.

And DESPITE us... DESPITE our nerves, our flaws, our incorrect ques, our huge emotions, they get the job done to their very best ability. Even when we fail them by letting our emotions get in the way, they come back and they try again. For US. Whoa. Let that sink in. If only we could all be so understanding.

To think of an animal that is forgiving and flexible enough to put up with the repetition of practice, the intense nerves of the rider, the stress of hauling and still meet you at the gate for scratches is MIND. BLOWING.

If you haven’t done so lately. Thank your horse.

If you’re successful, thank the horses that put you there and made you. Thank the horses that gave everything they had for you simply because you ASKED them to.

If you’re still on the journey to success, thank the horses that made you fall in love with your sport and who have helped give you the confidence to want to learn more and be better.

We can never stop learning as horsemen and horsewomen, and by continuing our education every horse in our future will be better off.

Next time you head to the arena leave your ego at the door and thank your horse!”
