I upgraded to a smaller, very efficient air tight woodstove with 30w blower from tractor supply co. Works fantastic in my fifth wheel. Up to a 10 hr burn depending on outdoor temp with 2 sawdust bricks.

Off grid life in northern Arizona. Four years since we bought our 37 acre ranch - we love the simplicity and serenity. All solar, composting toilet, hauled water.
We bought the property from someone who put in the infrastructure. They built the house, solar building, water building and storage shed. They did the roads and driveway plus the fencing. We have been improving on what they did and doing updates and maintenance mostly.

Hi everyone! 2 years ago I bought my great great great grandfather’ farm (family’s heir property) that was abandoned since 1947. It’s 103 acres. His old cabin was burned down. I want to replace it. I was offered this old cabin. It’s about 3 hours away from my property. I want to see how realistic moving or taking this apart would be? Is it worth the hassle? It it worth it financially? Thanks for your opinions/advice.
Edit: Thanks for all the responses. I’m truly grateful. I’m reading through all the responses and hopefully I can make a decisions in a few days. I’m a woman my profile picture is my younger brother that passed in 2014. I’m a licensed mental health practitioner and I don’t live on the property right now. I live 5 hours away from it with my 5 great nieces and nephews whose parents died. I hope to move and build my home there in a year or two. The cabin is free. I have a group of 5 strong men that would help me if I went to dismantle the cabin. One has a lot of buillding experience but not with cabins. One has a large trailer that could move the wood. My grandfather’s cabin was too close to the road and not where I want my primary place to be on the property. But I wanted to put something back in its spot that wasn’t expensive but yet an introduction to the farm. I do have a lot of wood on the property. I actually did a timber cut on 20 of the acres. I wanted to get a mill saw for a barn and other projects for my horses, chickens etc. I am not an experienced builder at all but I have rehabbed several properties and people are always shocked that I did most of the work.

I posted some of these pics in a comment on another post but figured I’d elaborate. This is my off grid cabin in Maine. 75 private acres. Solar panels for 200 ah battery to inverter 120v power. Drilled well with frost free Bison hand pump. Rain barrels for water to toilet and kitchen sink (has septic). Recently purchased the shipping container and built a deck on top and used old skis to finish the railings. Converted an old slate pool table to a pressure treated frame with leveling jacks and now we can shoot pool under the stars! This is my personal oasis and just wanted to share it with everyone

Hello all. I've posted a couple times before about properties I was looking at, but they all fell through for one reason or another.
I need to make a decision on this gorgeous 147 acres in Aleppo, PA (far SW PA, by WV). I'm in Florida, but a few buddies of mine that know these type of properties went and viewed it for me. They loved it. BUT, there is this old house that I thought I would be able to rehab. They said NO WAY, it's a knock down.
Anybody have any clue what the cost to raze and remove a building? I do love the property, but not too excited about having to pay $30,000?? to get rid of the house already there, then start fresh.
I'm totally fine doing a nice RV for a period of time, but would eventually want a log cabin, or a singe wide, not sure which.
My horizon to retirement is 5 to 7 years, so in the interim this would be a place for vacations, some weekends, etc.
The price for the acreage is around $2,000/acre. Electric is there, septic is there, well was fine until logging company crushed it so new well needs to be dug/done. Still not sure who's paying for that.
This is the actual house that needs to go. Gallon of gas and a match maybe? LOL.
Thoughts?

Can I get ideas and pictures for a hearth behind my fireplace?
Edit: great reply’s, I see both rock to absorb heat and metal to reflect heat.
I leaning towards rock brick or stone to hold the heat….

Getting this small cabin liveable. As you can see the ceilings are just wood planks and the walls as well. The walls were covered by paneling. We've started tearing that out. Any recommendations on what to cover the wood planks with? Dry wall. What about tht ceiling? Also there is no insulation but house seems to be kept pretty cool during summer months and not to cold during winter

This is my wood set up
As I’m making my way down one side
The other side is drying
When done
It takes me about 15-20 minutes back and forth to wood pile to load up side to dry again
Works the same with baskets for kindling
I use one
Other dries
Fill one use the other
Basket for birch bark never seems to empty as I’m always pulling birch off my kindling - small trees that had to be cut to make room for larger ones
Paper and cardboard collected up top
Also having the wood stove elevated a real bonus
Hot tip form friend off grid
I can sit and load wood in am
Or just sit and enjoy my coffee/ tea
Watching the fire transform the wood

We bought 11 acres in Oregon 2 years ago. We have been building since mid-August. We have done this completely on our own and a little help from neighbors. We have been living in an rv for over a year. I’m so ready to have an actual house again. Our dream is slowly coming true. The property could be hooked to power but we’ve managed to survive off grid. Diesel heaters, solar with battery back up and generator for the winter months.

We weren't planning on living off grid but had no choice but to after rent went up to ridiculous prices and no work there was no other way. Found a trailer a family member was selling. (Which my mom bought us because we couldn't). It has a furnace and hopefully can beat the cold. It's never been lived in the winter and is over 20yrs old so here we go....making the best of it. Not ready for a Canadian winter lol but with no choices just trying to make the best of it. Dogs love they are outside a lot more lol

definitely not new to living off grid. The book of faces kept recommending this group so I finally joined. One thing that I really like about this group is that there hasn't been anyone making negative comments that I have seen about people who have made some simple mistakes while learning their way. I grew up on a small ranch in Colorado and learned much at a young age, and I have always believed that there is no such thing as a stupid question, only foolish mistakes.
I lived in town for a while but have always lived pretty close to the land. I retired and built a totally off grid place with no bills and no expenses, but have since screwed up and got married, and women are pretty partial to luxuries like running water and internet access. I had to build another house. I built this barn from mostly recycled materials, except the roof which had a hefty price. 1800 square feet of floor space with solar power, two woodstoves, workshop barn downstairs and possible living space upstairs, for right at $5,000. I did add on an outhouse later but the cost was minimal, another concession to the more sophisticated type.
I grew up living ways that didn't involve electricity, but it can be more work than people are capable of in today's world. I have an old pamphlet somewhere printed by the government in the 1800's which explains how to homestead land and describes the skills needed which is still pretty accurate to this day. One thing that always struck me was that the government offered 40 acre homestead parcels on the United States east coast, but they made it very plain that you needed at least 900 acres to be sustainable west of the Mississippi River. That still holds true today. A next door neighbor bought 400 acres of prime farm land and showed me on paper how he was going to be rich and successful. He had money when he moved here, built a nice house, bought some farm equipment, had a really good crop of hay every year, and him and his wife worked hard every day. It took him about five years to go bankrupt because what you can plan on paper doesn't necessarily work out.
I've been here since the 1960's, and have learned you don't need luxuries and lots of money to be happy.

Yes folks the boating season is over. Their is no turning back. I am in it for the long haul. Waiting for ice conditions to be safe so I can ski out to get my sled!
