In the 1960s, indoor drag racing gained immense popularity, leading to unique events at the Chicago Amphitheater during winter. Known as the "World's Only Indoor Drag Races," these events occurred a few times between 1962-1964. The concrete stadium hosted 148 cars, including top-level Stock, Factory Experimental, and Gassers, engaging in drag races. Despite challenges like a narrow track and cold weather, fans witnessed exciting races. The participants, some driving to the venue, faced icy conditions, and the indoor concrete track lacked traction, resulting in speeds around 70-80 mph. The appeal of winter drag racing in Chicago peaked on January 27th, 1963, with 247 cars. However, safety concerns led to the cancellation of a 1965 event, realizing the risks of running gas-filled race cars indoors. The unique atmosphere, noise, and tire smoke made these indoor drag races a memorable part of the era's drag racing culture.
