Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop in the uterus. They can range in size, number, and location, and are also known as leiomyomas or myomas.
Prevalence by Race:
Fibroids are more common among African American women, with a reported prevalence of:
- 80-90% by age 50
- 70% by age 35-39
- 60% by age 25-29
In comparison, the prevalence among White women is:
- 70% by age 50
- 40% by age 35-39
- 30% by age 25-29
Age:
Fibroids are more likely to develop as women age, especially during the reproductive years (20-50).
Symptoms:
Common symptoms include:
- Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
- Pelvic pain or discomfort
- Frequent urination
- Constipation
