General information

Since 2014, I have pursued drawing from life and urban sketching as a daily practice, evolving my style and approach, compiling a visual archive of life, fashion trends, and the social scene of the Charlotte area, for a project formerly called The Real Charlotte Observer (you can find archives on my website) I draw live on scene in ink; I do not sketch beforehand, all drawings are done in the moment responding spontaneously to what is occurring in front of me, and I do not draw from a photo reference. At current time of writing (July 2018) I have completed over 13,500 drawings that document people living in Charlotte for the past 4 years. I have now moved to Burlington and continue this project in different areas in the southeast. Intensely Observant. Wandering Witness is an urban sketching project focusing on people in the public space. I draw live on scene in ink; I do not sketch beforehand, all drawings are done in the moment responding spontaneously to what is occurring in front of me, and I do not draw from a photo reference. All of the people in the drawings are real, and are drawn directly from life without posing. At current time of writing (July 2018) I have completed over 13,500 drawings that document people living in Charlotte for the past 4 years. I now live in Glencoe, North Carolina and continue the project in this general area.

Since 2014, I have operated a solo project called theREALcharlotteObserver , where I created and shared these drawings online within 24 hours of the event that occurred, as a sort of digital newspaper. Because I moved, I ended The Real Charlotte Observer as an area-specific endeavor, and I now live just outside Burlington, NC and share these regularly under the new project title Wandering Witness

I practice every day to gain the speed and design dexterity needed to capture fleeting moments as they happen, and by cataloguing the way people move and interact in the public space, I'm recording historically significant cultural movements and events as well as everyday minutia---which itself is historically significant in sum with other moments. I take samples of life weekly from different areas of the city and state.
