The fact that my glitter sunscreen showed up in so many of these pictures has me literally jumping out of my seat with excitement! 🤩

You may have not ever competed with her, but we all know her name.

Adriane is so much fun to be on the field with. USUALLY I only ever get to see her in Enumclaw…but THIS year I get the privilege of following her around at the Maine Highland Games as well!!! And I am beyond excited about that!

Her personality definitely shines in her photos and I’m here for them all. ❤️

This time last year, I was in Missoula, Montana editing Enumclaw photos in a sweet hotel room and getting ready for Spokane!!

Sadly (and not so sadly), this year I am in my own office editing Enumclaw photos getting ready for Clash of the Valkyries!

North To Alaska! To join the media team!!

TBH I’m TERRIFIED. If you don’t already follow the Alaska games instagram page, go check it out. Their media output is off the charts.

So I’m stepping in with the best of the best up there. (Wish me luck 😬 🍀)

But I’m OVER THE MOON excited to finally be able to photograph the salmon toss and witness some of the best throwers in the business do their stuff!

A “Pro-tip” that the other Pros aren’t talking about.

“Something magic happens when you realize that Rest and Stagnancy are not the same thing”

For some reason I grasped this concept SO easily in athletics and fitness. Rest is KEY to muscle growth and avoiding burn out.
WHY is it I haven’t been able to connect the dots with all other aspects of my life. Especially art and photography. Photography has been such a huge part of my life for so long and all I have ever heard from “gurus” and “influencers” is practice everyday, carry your camera with you everywhere. But you know what? Some of my favorite images have come from after a hiatus. Some of my most exciting ideas have come from after a period of time without a camera in hand.

Does this count as published?? Because if so, It’ll be the second time someone has wanted to print my images!!!
The first time was the enumclaw newspaper who used one of my images for the cover story on the 2022 games. (Shout out to for being the first “chosen one”) …if I had gone down to the office I could have got a copy of it…but im pretty sure they don’t hold things for as long as it’s been… 😅

Anyway, be sure to keep an eye out if you are in the enumclaw area for posters and brochures for THE CLAW!

The look on my face when someone recognizes me out in public from Instagram. 😅

This past weekend I was at a dance convention we go to every year like clock-work (I totally forgot any video or photo from this year, but I’ll share a video I did last year if anyone wants to see a dance floor install. 😅)

Anyway, it’s like 10pm and out of no where this adorable human being walks up to our little group and keeps looking at me, and in my mind I’m like “she is probably waiting to talk to Jim (our resident pro dancer) or maybe there is something in my teeth”… we make eye contact again and she starts with “so this might sound weird, but… do you do Highland Games?”. …like she could have smacked me in the face I was so DUMB FOUNDED. 🤣
And you guys, we might have a new convert to our NW kilt posse.

it was genuinely nice to meet you and I’m SO thankful you came up and said something. I hope to see you at practice and maybe out on the dance floor again! ❤️💃🏼

Ok, so I know we are right in the middle of the holiday rush, but…

I CANT WAIT FOR NEXT SEASON!!! Now, I was previously REALLY torn on whether I was going to photog more or compete more this coming season but I find myself dreaming about being on the field with my camera. I honestly wish I could have the athletic camaraderie with the independence and creativity of photography. But with the creative independence, you can’t really do the socializing 😭

So if you see me out on the field with my camera, don’t be intimidated! I LOVE the social aspect of being on the field. It honestly makes you as athletes more comfortable with me as a photographer which makes for better photos! 🔥ria

If you happen to follow me on instagram, you have seen I have made some changes to the stuff I post . I figured I would test it out there before bringing it to the greatness that is Facebook.

I'm veering away from strictly highland game photography and making this more of a content creator page. I will still be posting some of my work (as I will continue to be a games photographer/videographer) and my website will still be available at the same link : cmontaguephoto.com

So, going forward there will be a wider variety of videos and photos centered around highland games, fitness, humor and my photography. So, to the meat of the post.
this is NOT one of my best photos. I quickly snapped it out of video mode, so the quality is atrociously low. But I LOVE the story. Kevin had just flipped the caber, making him the only one in the class to do it. Not only did he flip it, but I believe it was a 12 o’clock (correct me if I’m wrong). But the 2 crowd members who were ALL about it just kill me! 😅

I have this thing about throwers in sunglasses.
No matter what they do it just looks so cool!!

Personally I can’t stand to wear them when I throw. (In my infinite years of experience.. 😅). But damn it if I dont want a cool thrower sunglass photo of myself. 🤣

He is helpful, he is kind, he is badass, he is funny, he is intense and he is dedicated.
He and his wife are solid human beings and I can’t wait to see them next year! (If not sooner 😁)

Last year at McMinville I was new, but I wanted to get a photo of the chalk dust. I didn’t know anyone THAT well so I politely waited.. I think I may have got a sort of one from Tim… but it wasn’t what I had envisioned…

Well , today I put my photog director hat on and got my picture. 😅
was chalking up for his WFD throw and as I’m sitting next to him I just said “Nathan… clap” and he did and that’s what I appreciates about him

I’m about to do a Highland Games “battle of the sexes” popularity contest. 😅

I posted that all girl reel yesterday and IT BLEW UP. Now, I’m wondering who would win in an instagram competition of likes. Men or women highland throwers? (Pretty sure I know)
I’ll definitely be getting more content this weekend at and we can officially do a battle of the sexes, Highland Games edition

I made a new reel for tomorrow featuring both men and women athletes from the Kelso games.

I made it this evening while literally sitting in my car in the parking lot of the store because my husband offered to take the kid for the evening and I’m too awkward to work in a restaurant or coffee shop. 😅

SHEAF!

Last night I went out and practiced some sheaf. Man, if you really sit down and think it out, there are so many variants that can affect your throw. The position of either hand, the tine count of your fork, where the bag hangs on the tines, how far you twist, where you block….like SO many things to think about!
My husband has an engineers brain and was trying to help with the physics of my throw. Not gonna lie, it helped.

I’m so excited for this weekend. From the sounds of it we are going to have some big crowd coming to the McMinville games!

I forgot how many awesome photos came out of the Skagit games! It was by FAR my biggest gallery…got a little trigger happy and had 0 control when I was culling. 😅

But and his crew put on an incredible game and I’m so excited he is stepping in (if only temporarily) to help out with mo-throw this year.

While I’m not super stoked to go north through Seattle, I would go to any game he asked me to. 💪🏼
Not only that, I kind of want to go have a drink at the bar he and his wife just bought. 🍻 😅

I have been working on making a reel for a couple days now…

I got some good videos from Kelso but I want to do them justice… so I’m diving into an intense bootcamp for Adobe Premier Pro. And HOLY COW! …it’s a lot. 😅

On another note. Since I wasn’t available full day and don’t have any individual gallery all that big, I’m going to set the Kelso images for free download. They will have my watermark. If you WANT to purchase the images without a watermark, reach out. I’ll post the link to the whole gallery tomorrow.

Another unintended consequence of getting involved in the Highland Games…

I desperately want to go get another tattoo… 😫

I notice it as I photograph and edit, but it’s (for some reason) SO much more prominent as an athlete… they all just look SOO COOL! I’m thinking I want to get the Doors of Durin (Lord of the Rings) on my shoulder to start.

I need to find a good local tattoo artist. I have only ever been to random traveling artists on a whim when I was on vacation. One guy was a traveling artist from Brazil, which was pretty cool.

Also, the algorithm seems to not like black and white photos…but i do. So. I’ll be posting more. 😅

Ill have more practice and training videos in the coming days. Did some hammer winds last night. And it’s feeling pretty darn good, it helps I have a great coach. 😘

Speaking of training, I’m weird, I love shadow throws and drills.

A lot of jokes have been made about the size of a caber and how to properly wield it.
and.momentum is all of those jokes in one. Right where with this long thick piece of wood. 🤣🤣🤣

Caber is still a mystery to me. I was able to get 2/3 attempts successfully picked..on my 3rd attempt I was able to move and walk with it pretty comfortably…it was at that moment the thought hit me… “NOW WHAT?!” So far my training has just “been focus on the pick”, which is solid and I will continue to do that. But in the heat of competition with a caber that I feel I could actually turn…like WHAT NOW?! 🤣🤣🤣.
