BEHIND THE SCENES: Tonight is the Silver Dollar City Children’s Christmas Party for the employee’s children and grandchildren. Each child gets a long talk with Santa and even receives a gift! This has become a family tradition for us. They also give out ornaments every year that we add to our family Christmas tree!

BEYOND THE LAKES and the FIRST RADIO BROADCAST FROM A CAVE: Dave Whittaker, of radio station KBHM in Branson, negotiates the overhang past the lakes in Marvel Cave. Climbing this overhanging cliff is made much more difficult by the thick layer of sticky, slippery red clay which covers almost everything in this section of the cave. In the second photo, Dave Whittaker, Pete and Jack Herschend broadcast live on the radio a description of the trip to this point, farther than had ever been reched before. Here, they encountered a canyon 80 feet wide and roughly 100 feet deep, with sheer walls that offered no footholds. Lacking sufficient rope, the party was forced to turn back at the canyon's rim. Everyone in the KBHM broadcast area was listening rather tensely by the time contact was finally made; all over town folks poured out in the streets to tell each other the explorers were OK and that they were turning back. They were content with what they had accomplished, and decided to leave the rest of the cave for future explorers to discover.

Here is Jack Herschend assisting Dottie Jordan, a YWCA girl from St. Louis, as they descend 55 feet down the Grand Crevasse to the lakes 300 feet below the surface in Marvel Cave. The girls and their leaders spent an entire winter training for this trip.

Shera here: what it’s like living with Corey….
We have this message board in our kitchen. I used to put scripture or fun quotes on it, but then it became a competition between our kids of who could rearrange the letters the funniest. I asked Corey to put something on it for Christmas. This is what I came home to. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Who knows what movie this quote is from?

Every now and then, I come across a photo I’ve never seen before. This is Jack and Peter Herschend leading a group across Lake Miriam in a raft. The photo was taken along the left shore, near the Grand Crevasse. The Grand Crevasse is a tricky 55-foot descent that you have to navigate to reach Lake Miriam and Lake Genevieve, which are located 300 feet below the surface in Marvel Cave. Not many pics of the lakes exist. This rare photo from the 1950s is now part of my collection!

My 7-year-old wanted to stop at the truck stop with the “cool” bathrooms. The ones with the sinks that dispense soap, water and then dry your hands right from the sink. We are easily amused.

A glimpse into our house tonight: That’s my son Garren and his buddy Dillon Massengale. Dillon is the son of Branson fiddlers Wayne Massengale and Melody Hart. You can catch Dillon performing with his family at Wranglers HonkyTonk in Branson. He’s even had the honor of singing at the Grand Ole Opry with Rhonda Vincent!

Shera update: aside from tiring quickly, I am feeling so much better! I really must be, cuz I’m craving my favorite snack from SDC! Is it asking too much for Corey to pack some dry ice to keep the ice cream frozen and bring this home to me? 🤷🏻‍♀️😉

Back in the 1960s, Marvel Cave tours went down in front of the Liberty Bell, and then back up a set of stairs. Remnants of those stairs still exist today and can be seen right off the main trail!
