Audibles with Jason Scarborough continues with telling the stories of the people of the state of Mississippi and the Deep South. Coming up this weekend, we tell the story of our next guest, John Currence. John was born and raised in New Orleans, and his endeavors took him all across the southeast, even spending time on as a tugboat cook on a boat deep in the Gulf of Mexico.
In 1992, Currence moved to Oxford and opened what is now the famed City Grocery on the historic Square. Since that time, Currence has become one of the south’s most recognized chefs and restaurateurs, creating and opening what is now a franchise of store locations in Big Bad Breakfast, the new Snackbar in Oxford, and my personal favorite where we shot this interview, Bouré.
Winner of six different Beard Awards among dozens of other awards and national recognition, Currence tells his story of growing up in the south, when the moment happened where he realized that he knew he could be a chef and do it well, and his lessons and advice that he’s learned from his over 30 years in the business.

Following the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl loss to Ole Miss Football, Penn State head football coach James Franklin used his opening postgame remarks to say the officiating was "less than desirable," citing the opening drive FG instead of a TD was "a critical point of the game." Franklin stated he could reference "several instances" but said he would just "move on."
Important to note here for Franklin, and how bad this looks: Ole Miss also scored a FG on their opening possession. However, the officials botched letting the play roll after offsides was called on Penn State, wiping out the TD and forcing the Rebels to take the FG instead. Even the pro-Penn State TV announcers and ESPN's rules expert Matt Austin agreed that it was a bad call by the officials and the play should've resulted in a touchdown for Ole Miss.
Nevertheless, it didn't faze the Rebels. Ole Miss churned out nearly 600 yards of offense with a QB that was playing hurt, an offensive line that was still dealing with injuries and patchwork lineups, and one of their start WR's (Watkins) still nursing a hand injury. Also, if any team benefitted from quirky, fluke plays and the officiating, it wasn't Ole Miss.
Perhaps Franklin needs to watch the gamefilm again and point the finger at the lack of offense, the turnovers forced by Ole Miss, and the Rebel offense shredding their #1 defense. Just a thought. In the meantime, watch below.
During the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl postgame, Ole Miss Football head coach Lane Kiffin said he believes they're "just getting started with something special" in Oxford.
SOUND UP:
During his opening statements after the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl blowout win over Penn State Football, Ole Miss Football head coach Lane Kiffin reflected on the opportunity four years ago to come to Oxford, an opportunity he thanked the university Chancellor (Dr. Glenn Boyce) and athletic director (Keith Carter) for again.
