WATER SAFETY: With the temperature climbing and more families spending time outdoors, it's increasingly important to be conscious of water safety, especially for children. Please be prepared, actively supervise children, and use barriers to reduce the risk of drowning.

đź’§ PREPARE:
- Learn CPR.
- Teach your child to ask for a parent/supervising adult's permission before entering water.
- Remove toys and items from pools that may encourage children to enter the water unsupervised.
- Teach children to swim and get out of the water.
- Wear life jackets.

đź’§ SUPERVISE:
- Designate someone to be the "water watcher" and actively watch swimming children without distractions.
- Don't rely on swimming aids to replace adult supervision.

đź’§ BARRIERS:
- Install a pool gate/fence to prevent children from wandering into the area unsupervised.
- Use door & window child-proof locks and alarms.

In an effort to protect the safety of our most vulnerable road users, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office began conducting a High Visibility Enforcement Detail (HVE) on July 16, 2024, and will continue these efforts through May 9, 2025, across Manatee County. This detail is funded through a contract with the University of North Florida in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation.

Manatee County ranks in the top 25 counties in Florida for traffic crashes resulting in serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists. The goal of this enforcement effort is to increase awareness of and compliance with traffic laws that protect the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists. Efforts will focus primarily on education to drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. However, violations may result in warnings or citations, depending on the circumstances.

Please help by doing your part to keep drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians safe by doing the following:

- Drivers: Obey speed limits, never drive impaired, and always watch for pedestrians and bicyclists.
- Bicyclists: Obey traffic laws, ride in the direction of traffic, and use lights when riding at night.
- Pedestrians: Cross in crosswalks or at intersections, obey pedestrian signals, and make sure you are visible to drivers when walking at night.

SCAM ALERT: LOST PET SCAMS! While this scam hasn't been reported to BPD yet, it's only a matter of time - and we want you to be aware of it. This one targets the families of missing pets. Scammers troll missing pet flyers or social media pages, then contact the pet's owner pretending to be with animal services. They claim lost pets are injured and demand money for urgent medical needs. Scammers also impersonate officers claiming to have found someone's pet.
How to spot red flags in this scam:
🚩 They say they have your pet but can’t provide photos, or provide an edited version of a picture you've used on a flyer or missing-pet website
đźš© They make threats regarding your pet
đźš© They make excuses about why you can't see your pet in person or in photos
đźš© They ask for money or personal information
đźš© You receive a text about your pet, and request that you send a code to "verify your identity"
