"Aziak Equipment’s Stable-Trek is a lightweight trekking-pole-to-monopod adapter that has revolutionized my outdoor-photography experience. With the Stable-Trek, I no longer need to lug around a bulky tripod."

Ever used a piece of outdoor gear and thought to yourself, Hmm, I wonder if a little tweak here & there would make this piece of gear better? Then you jerry-rig something, only to have it fall apart after a couple trips.

A young man takes a huge fall scrambling Ross Pass in the Bridgers, and lives to tell the tale—barely. Read about his accident and remarkable recovery.

And I should never have picked up. It was mid-July. A beautiful Montana summer day. The original plan was to fly fish for brook trout in the small bends of Brackett Creek. I was young—18 to be exact—carefree and oblivious to the future.

Been on I-90 between 19th & Bear Canyon lately? Managed to maintain your sanity and not shoot yourself in the face? Then join us in pillorying this summer's biggest bonehead, the Montana Department of Transportation. To the stocks, MDT!

Punishing our d***y, dawdling highway department. It’s Friday afternoon and the mountains are calling. After a pit-stop for gas and ice, you hit the I-90 on-ramp and point the rig east, to the land of open prairie, towering mountains, and endless opportunity. But what’s this?

"NRS’s Expedition DriDuffel will keep your gear dry, no matter what situation you find yourself in. The toothless waterproof seal is ready for unexpected immersion at any time. It also makes access almost effortless compared to a traditional roll-top dry-bag."

Spend enough time in a canoe, kayak, or raft, and you’ll learn the hard way that rivers are wet. This lesson usually comes in the form of a sopping-wet sleeping bag, tent, or other important item. But a little preparation can go a long way.

"I used to dread the rain when out on the trails. My old hand-me-down raincoat would leave me damp and cold, and take a few hours to completely dry out. With Outdoor Research's Stratoburst Stretch Rain Jacket, I no longer dread any forecasted (or surprise) precipitation."

Oh, how I used to dread the rain when out on the trails. My old hand-me-down raincoat would leave me damp and cold, and take hours to dry out afterward.

Whether it’s a weekend ridge traverse or open climbing projects, we owe it to ourselves—and to all our invested energy—to ensure it’s all-systems-go in the mountains. Our bodies require a specific set of attributes for a specific set of demands. These are the core ingredients for running and climbing, courtesy of our friends at Excel Physical Therapy.

Essential ingredients for running and climbing. Whether it’s a weekend ridge traverse or open climbing projects, we owe it to ourselves—and to all our invested energy—to ensure it’s all systems go in the mountains.

Everyone's got his or her own reason for tying flies—but the author of this story has a handful of reasons not to tie flies. Read the whole piece by this untied angler.

To tie, or not to tie? I don’t milk cows. Nor do I concoct ski wax from beeswax or laminate the rubber soles of my own running shoes. I’ve yet to mill the parts and assemble a 20-gauge or build a fly rod from a skinny length of shiny graphite. None of those things seem to matter.

"We've been Ge**er Gear fans for years, so when the company released its new Camp Kitchen suite, we were all over it, snatching up a few key items to improve our camp-cooking kit. Here's a rundown of some Ge**er gear that we'll be packing along, from now until the snow flies."

We've been Ge**er fans for years, having tested out—and thoroughly approved of—several of their knives over the years. And, of course, we love cooking up tasty meals while car-camping (who doesn't?).

Last Thursday, the O/B Crew hosted a Camp Cooking Workshop. We reviewed heavyweight and lightweight cooking, different types of stoves and cookware, basic ingredient combinations, food quantities, and even whipped up a pineapple upside-down cake as part of our dutch oven tutorial. Not to mention our attendee's collectively went home with over $1,000 worth of raffle prizes.

Thanks to everyone who joined us, and for our sponsors for making the raffle so worthwhile. Shout out to MSR - Mountain Safety Research, Ge**er Gear, SylvanSport, Skratch Labs, Gastro Gnome Meals, Jetboil, and VSSL.

Stay tuned for the next O/B event. We've got quite a bit up our sleeves this Fall.

"While wet grass might be formidable to the average pair of pants, it’s not to the SITKA Gear Dew Point Pants. These Gore-Tex rain pants are fully waterproof and have 20-denier nylon ripstop face, meaning light brush-busting is no sweat, either."

Early fall brings a slew of changes to the local landscape: ripe apples, colorful leaves, crisp air, but perhaps most ubiquitous is the incessant morning dew. And while the wet grass might be formidable to the average pair of pants, it’s not to the Sitka Dew Point Pants.

With plenty of activities to fill your calendar all summer long here in Bozeman, it can feel pretty fruitless to waste time on first-date after first-date at one of the 42 coffee shops or 25 breweries in town, when you could be out running, biking, or swimming. Plus, as soon as you think you’ve found a suitable boyfriend who cares about you nearly as much as his other pursuits, he runs off with a one-way ticket to climb in South America. That’s exactly the trend Matt Schmeyker picked up on when he started the Bozeman Speed Dating Triathlon Circuit last year.

Triathlon speed-dating burns through Bozeman. There’s a lot of opportunity here in Bozeman.

"This summer, I tested out the Vigor Grid Fleece Half Zip from Outdoor Research—a simple, hoodless jacket. The grid-style insulation breathes while exercising, but retains heat when stopped, making the jacket a good companion for crisp days on the trail or chilly mornings in camp."

When it comes to cold-weather layers, there are two you’ll see in every Bozeman closet: a down puffy and a synthetic fleece.

What happens when a group of friends sets out to do 15 kilometers of running and hit nearly as many breweries—all in just a few hours? Read one woman's story to find out.

A brewery running tour in the heat of summer. The better part of July had come and gone, and the month continued to burn with the hot fervor typical of a Montana summer. Throw in some wildfire smoke and our usual high-alpine trail runs became far less appealing.
