NW Daily Marker A journal of the current events in politics and culture important to the people of the Pacific North We take the responsibility very seriously.

The NW Daily Marker is fortunate to draw on a community of talented local writers and experts to deliver incisive and thoughtful commentary and analysis on the issues affecting our distinctive American region. We live in a time that conservative news media phenom Andrew Breitbart correctly describes as a “renaissance of investigative journalism and participatory democracy.” The free range environm

ent of the Internet – a come as you are universe for alternative viewpoints – has provided a much-needed contrast to the traditional media. Because of greater choice in the market for information, society has rediscovered something traditional media successfully obscured for a period of time – the media has a point of view. We at the NW Daily Marker believe that a media organization should have a point of view, but we also believe that the power of civil conversation is at the heart of improving the civic condition of the communities in which we all live. Advocating a particular point of view, however, should never trump higher responsibilities to ethics and intellectual honesty. In an age when communication is decentralizing at an accelerating pace, the burden of responsibly handling information falls on the shoulders of new media entrepreneurs. We are committed to forging friendly relationships with contributors who can provide challenging positions on the issues and we also welcome unsolicited contributions. The friction of competing ideas is the best fire in which to forge strong solutions. (For more details about our contributor guidelines, see Write For Us.) Founded by Bryan Myrick in 2011, the NW Daily Marker is a for-profit entity wholly owned by the founder. In addition to a body of work in the field of communications, Myrick has been writing on national and local politics since 2008. He is a featured contributor at Red County, and served for a time as the site’s West Regional Editor.

With the kickoff of the state legislative session, things are moving fast in Olympia and one thing moving particularly fast appears to be a new effort at “consumer protection.” Pairs of bills are moving in each chamber that would likely ban almost all short term, small dollar loans. One set would accomplish this by preventing fintechs from making those loans in conjunction with banks where the bank isn’t the primary lender....

"While the move will likely be cheered by anti-drunk driving campaigners, red flags are privately being raised by some critics that the bill will do nothing significant to address impaired driving in Washington State."

Legislation introduced by a bipartisan group of Washington lawmakers would reduce the percentage of blood alcohol concentration (BAC) legally determined...

"In the 2020 presidential race, it is not hard to conceive that two distinct blocs of voters have been engaged in divergent relationships with two Trumps and two Bidens. On Tuesday, four versions of two men will for 90 minutes collapse into one reality."

The teachers’ union does a disservice to students, parents, and taxpayers when it constructs fantasies of a future educational restoration project on the one hand, and then suggests that the real problem is that we attach any measure to student achievement on the other.

Across all occupations, the anticipation of receiving a poor performance report gives rise to a tempting work-around: when the current...
