THREE CHEERS FOR Michelle Buteau

"I’ve always been an inclusive person. And especially with comedy or anything in the arts, we have to speak truth to power. I don’t understand why we get to make fun of and punch down and berate on beautiful communities because the world is changing and we should change along with it. I mean, that’s what should happen. Change isn’t linear, but as performers, we also have the power to move that needle. And quite frankly, I really wish more performers that have a bigger platform than me would also speak out, because it’s the reason why an injustice will happen for so long. No one’s calling it out."

The comic and 'Survival of the Thickest' creator-star will release her Radio City Music Hall stand-up special on Dec. 31.

This is a must read:

"Audiences should know by now that what they’re watching is about 20% reality and 80% tricks of the trade. The drama is amped up, with perfectly placed sound effects, strongly percussive music tracks, stolen looks from 10 minutes prior — edited to make you think she’s pi**ed at her enemy when, in actuality, she was rolling her eyes because the sound guy had to p*e. We’re even instructed to cobble together scraps of footage to create entire scenes that never happened at all.

If audiences saw the raw footage of reality TV stars, you’d fall asleep in front of your TVs or go to another app on your phone. Editors have been instructed for years to feed you counterfeit drama to keep you watching so the networks could get more money from advertisers — so network executives could show more profits and give themselves higher salaries."

Editors have been instructed for years to feed you counterfeit drama to keep you watching — but now the industry is taking a turn that we didn't see coming.

Up for more discussion....

JOLIE I knew some of her music, I knew of her, but so much of this was a discovery for me. I hope what audiences find is that there was so much research done into what we believe she really was like — the human being behind the voice and behind the image. Maybe not “behind the voice,” because the voice is the woman. But I think even if I’d read biographies on her, I [wouldn’t have understood her] until I stepped in and kind of felt her. I hope more people discover her and opera and go to the opera and listen to opera. It’s really a transformative, unique art form — I think it does something to our souls that is essential.

"It certainly was the hardest thing I’ve ever done," Jolie tells THR about playing the legendary opera singer Maria Callas, adding, "Where we really connect is in our dedication to our work, our vulnerability, our loneliness and our love of communicating with an audience."

Coming up on this 3-day weekend in the United States, honoring the American labor movement and the works and contributions of laborers to the development and achievements in the United States - let's take a moment for reflection:

With the social summer season nearing its end and we can take moments with our friends and families at the beach, or camping, or backyard barbecues, we often reflect with gratitude the situations we experience - whether in everyday life or art and performance.

How do we perceive beauty and perhaps subsequently the sublime? Is it in moments just described? Is it in the concert we may attend this weekend? How about reading a book and escaping?

Here, the amazing Tessa Davidson Artist explains these concepts by the Immanuel Kant

In this video, we discuss Immanuel Kant and his aesthetic categories of the "beautiful" and the "sublime." We discuss how Kant viewed transcendent aesthetic ...

Don't call it a musical, but it does sound like an

"Still Phoenix’s initial concept — that Arthur, who moves so uncomfortably through the world, could finally find a way to express himself with music — lingered as Phillips and his co-writer, Scott Silver, began plotting a return to Gotham City."

"The answer is a full-on musical, which uses a genre associated with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire to examine a frayed mind growing even more dangerously untethered as the Joker stands trial for five murders.

“Todd took a very big swing with this whole concept and with the script, giving the sequel to ‘Joker’ this audacity and complexity,” says Gaga. “There’s music, there’s dance, it’s a drama, it’s also a courtroom drama, it’s a comedy, it’s happy, it’s sad. It’s a testament to [Todd] as a director, that he would rather be creative than just tell a traditional story of love.”

Todd Phillips unpacks the creation of ‘Joker 2', a sequel that began with Joaquin Phoenix’s dream and sees Lady Gaga singing as Harley Quinn.

DropoutTV (formerly College Humor) is now a god-tier platform. If you've been living under a rock, awhile back, IAC, their parent company cut them lose and fired the entire creative staff.

Sam Reich, Director of Original Content, then spent nearly all of his own money to acquire College Humor, putting the entire IP on survival mode, relying almost entirely on their TTRPG live play show Dimension 20 (hosted by Brennan Lee Mulligan)....until they were able to slowly claw their way back to sustainability. During this difficult time, they hired back the original cast and crew on a part time basis whenever possible here and there.

Eventually, they fully rebranded as Dropout (their subscription platform), and they have since doubled their subscriber count, doubled their content, AND have introduced profit sharing. The only reason they aren't a full co-op is because most people are hired on a project basis, however the profit sharing is for everyone, even people who only worked for them once, even people who auditioned (they also pay for auditioning).

Even before profit-sharing, they pay their employees and contractees significantly higher than the industry norm. To the point that the Unions exempted them from the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, because they were basically the gold standard in the industry (of course, serving on the Writer's Guild of America West is Adam Conover...from Adam Ruins Everything, another show originally made by Dropout). Edited: I stand corrected, they weren’t covered by what the strike was against, and so was exempt, but it is true they already fulfill all requirements; and also acted in solidarity with the strikers.

Dropout also pushes the boundaries of representation, and diversity (Dimension 20's Dungeons and Drag Queens was a god tier season).

And of course, we all know Reich and Brennen are comrades. Or at least liberals on the more left-side of the spectrum. So we can trust them not to screw their employees, nor the audience.

(edited: folks are telling me Brennen is a 100% all in, no l**e, no hesitation socialist; and that Sam is probably pushing the boundaries for a Liberal and is likely a stealth socialist himself)

Anyway, all this is to say that I am re-subscribing to Dropout, and I suggest you do the same. I have never not laughed at their content.

Meanwhile, Netflex just has a rotation of TERFs and bigots as so-called Comedians on there. Bleh.

The specifics of the story may not be of interest, but the pathology and journey I find fascinating and of human interest of an industry and gatekeeping. This is film industry, but how can we get the momentum in the performing arts and aggregate all of this.

Awards Daily's Sasha Stone built a reputation as an independent voice on film, but a recent turn to the right — and a "white power" comment on social media — alienated Hollywood gatekeepers while endearing her to a new Trump-loving audience.

It’s very important to be transparent about going rates for your labor and expertise. This helps producers and administrators to better envision their ideas and implement them for success all around.
