The Transformative Power of Music
Within the City of Boston, and all over the free world youth are continuously plagued with the unpredictable threat of community violence and poverty. In most cases, It can be reoccurring and persistent for those who live in low- income housing areas. Witnessing acts of community violence whether physical or emotional on a regular basis can severely impact Social – Emotional Learning (SEL), cognitive development and contribute to creating unprecedented health disparities.

The human spirit is believed to be the force and source of a person’s core energy. Ultimately the meaning of one’s existence. Spirituality is perceived to be the maturation of a person’s conscious development created by relationships, value and meaning. Oddly enough, these are the same three categories that being consistently ‘exposed to violence and poverty can deteriorate. The effects of violence and poverty can be so crippling on our youths cognitive development, it can disrupt the brains capacity to develop the ability to self-sooth and sustain self - regulation. In turn, one may feel anxious, be hyper vigilant, experience unwanted elevated stress and constantly feel overwhelmed or angry and have difficulty learning and accessing formal education. Being consistently exposed to violence and poverty disrupts the human psyche and makes it difficult for our youth to experience safety and wellbeing In the world (Mullqueen, Joann, Elias, John L, 2000).
Creating music can help support and enhance cognitive development in our youth. Music helps us to dream and imagine places we have never been before. Through activating and synchronizing neural firing patterns, music helps to orchestrate and connect multiple brain sites. The neural synchrony experience throughout the brain from listening and creating music increases the brains efficiency and effectiveness. The systems and various parts of the brain affected by music are located in the frontal, parietal and temporal lobes as well as the cerebellum. There remains plenty of evidence based research that reinforces the transformative power and benefit of creating music. Increased spatial reasoning, critical thinking abilities and generalized mathematical skills are just few of the cognitive benefits (Jensen, 2001). Support your local music and creative art initiatives to save youth lives.
