It was nice to be greeted with a nice cool breeze this morning that allows us to open up the windows and cool down the cottage and house interiors.

Unfortunately, we will need to keep an eye out for showers and/or a thunderstorm this afternoon and for the next several days. It will be next week before we see a day without the threat. At least our daytime temperatures will be reasonably comfortable.

Activity is picking up and getting closer on the radar. Just looking out of the window I can see what looks like it might be building up to become a T-storm to the north northeast of Southport.

A pretty dramatic difference, about 11°, between Boothbay and Southport right now!

Quick forecast update as we begin the hottest day that we have had for a while. As noted yesterday, Southport is the place to be if you want to escape the worst of the heat. Edgecomb folks might even want to spend some time in Boothbay Harbor where it will be a bit "cooler" and a sea breeze could make the heat a little more tolerable. At least tomorrow will be much nicer!

This afternoon we could get a thunderstorm or two, and a severe one is certainly possible.

Just one more day of the heat!

THE MIDWEEK UPDATE (06/19/24):

HAPPY JUNETEENTH! And welcome to the new followers of the page! I hope that you find it useful.

I probably don’t need to tell you that today and tomorrow are going to be uncomfortably hot and humid with tomorrow being the hottest. That “news” has been everywhere with high heat advisories and warnings issued for much of New England!

Today and tomorrow will be uncomfortably hot with tomorrow’s daytime highs ranging from 78° on Southport to 95° in Edgecomb. Southport won’t be escaping the discomfort as it is expected that the overnight temperature is likely to reach 80° briefly during Thursday night. Friday should see daytime temperatures about 10° degrees cooler than Thursday, and we should be back to much more comfortable temperatures for the weekend and for next week. Because of the large difference in temperature forecasts along the peninsula I have included 2-3 day forecast charts for Edgecomb, Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor and Southport today.

There is a good chance that we get some rain from thunderstorms later in the day tomorrow. The next likely time for precipitation looks like late Sunday and Monday.

Winds are expected to continue much as they have been until Sunday when they are expected to increase through the day with gusts approaching 40 mph late in the day.

The marine forecast remains pretty good with seas around 2-3 feet lowering to 1 foot Friday.

That tropical disturbance located near the Yucatan peninsula shouldn’t be of any concern to us, but is expected to develop into a Tropical Storm later today. Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for much of the western Gulf of Mexico coast in Mexico and Texas.

The next couple of days will be very warm especially further up the peninsula and away from the shore. The breeze could make it tolerable in Boothbay Harbor, but I'd say that Southport is perhaps the better place to be on Thursday! It would be a good day to be at the beach!

I hope that our friends in Edgecomb have air conditioning! Thursday will be a lot warmer there than in the southern portion of the peninsula!

That tropical depression by the Yucatan Peninsula is now expected to develop into a Tropical Storm very soon. Tropical Storm warnings are up for sections of the Mexican and Texas coasts.

The depression now well east of the southern Florida coast most likely will move further eastward if/when it develops cyclonic characteristics.

Yes, it will be hot this week but not quite as hot as the generalized forecasts for the “coast.”

THE WEEK AHEAD (06/16/24):

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!

Today’s weather is hard to beat. Perhaps slightly warmer and a little less breezy would be nice, but I’ll take the high 60s and low humidity any time.

Today and tomorrow should be comfortably cool with daytime highs in the mid to upper 60s. Expect a rapid warmup beginning Tuesday peaking with a high around 90° on Thursday (UGH!). We should be back down to the more reasonable 70s by the weekend, and Sunday may be more like today with a high in the upper 60s.

Most of the coming week should be dry with the first real opportunity for any measurable precipitation being Friday. More rain is possible Saturday night with a total amount for Friday and Saturday of around ½ inch.

Winds should diminish slightly after tomorrow when we could see gusts around 25 mph with gusts under 20 mph for most of the rest of the week.

The marine forecast remains pretty good with seas around 3 feet today and tomorrow that should diminish a bit Tuesday night to around 2 feet.

There is a new tropical disturbance located over the Yucatan peninsula that shouldn’t be of any concern to us, but is associated with some pretty heavy rainfall along the coast of the western Gulf of Mexico.

A nice day is ahead as skies continue to clear out behind a cold front. Highs across most of the area will be in the 70s with mostly sunny skies. It will be somewhat breezy too with gusts of 20-25 mph.

That tropical disturbance is now off of the coast of the Carolinas. It is less likely now to ever develop into a hurricane but otherwise no real change in expectations.

A thunderstorm is about the only shot for significant rain today, but a couple of showers are quite possible.

Yes, I am keeping a close eye on that tropical disturbance even though I do not have a boat in the water yet, soon though.

The disturbance's latest reported position was due east of the Florida-Georgia line. It is still not expected to develop into a cyclone withing 48 hours, but it still is likely to do so within a week. Projected tracks and strength indicate that it could become the first hurricane of the season (Cat 1). It still looks like it should stay well offshore as it passes New England.

Although disorganized, it is likely responsible for the heavy rains that Florida has been experiencing over the past few days.

That tropical disturbance that was over central florida yesterday is now in the Atlantic. While it is not expected to develop into a tropical cyclone withing the next couple of days, it does appear that it is likely to develop into a Tropical Storm within a week. The projected tracks still take the storm well offshore from here with little expectation of serious impact to our area.

THE MIDWEEK UPDATE (06/12/24):

This will be a quick one as I have a busy day and almost forgot that it was time for the update.

Expect comfortable temperatures right into next week with high 60s and low 70s across the peninsula every day.

The only significant rain will arrive late Friday and probably early Saturday when it tapers off. (Not looking good for my plan to launch our small RIB Friday evening!)

Friday will also be the windiest day for a while, but with gusts only to around 30mph it still shouldn’t be a big issue.

The marine forecast remains pretty good with Friday the windiest (15 kt). A bit higher seas (3 ft) will accompany the wind and will continue into Saturday.

That tropical disturbance is now located over central Florida causing some heavy rains. It still isn’t expected to develop into a cyclone for at least another 2 days. Projected tracks for when/if it develops still take it well offshore from us. I’ll be watching this one and will provide updates should any significant changes occur.

A disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico, although not expected to become a tropical cyclone within a couple days, may develop into one after crossing Florida. If it does develop, it doesn't look like it will be affecting us in any serious way, as most potential tracks keep it well offshore.

THE WEEK AHEAD (06/09/24):

We have gotten a little useful rain today, between ¼ and ½ inch so far. The main area of rain has passed but there remain scattered showers and areas of heavier rain that may give us a bit more.

Today is quite cool with the temperature stuck in the upper 50s. Tomorrow will be warmer and we can expect temperatures in the upper 60s or 70s for most of the workweek. Next weekend will likely be a bit cooler but still noticeably warmer than today. I think that Accuweather’s temperature forecast with temperatures in the 80s at the end of the week is a bit “optimistic!”

It looks like showers a possible for the next several days with little accumulation. The next opportunity for significant rainfall looks like late Friday and Saturday with around ¾ inch total possible.

Winds will remain fairly light until Friday when some gusting over 30 mph is likely accompanying the rain. The NOAA GFS model is indicating gusts to 43 mph but it is too early to put any faith in that forecast.

The marine forecast continues to indicate pretty benign conditions through Thursday. Friday and Saturday may not be as benign, but I don’t expect anything severe and we’ll know better by mid week what to expect.

A week plus into hurricane season and still not activity in the tropical Atlantic. Let’s hop that it stays that way in spite of an “active” season being forecast by the National Hurricane Center.

06/09/2024

While we haven't seen a lot of sun over the last few days, we haven't gotten any really meaningful rain. I expect that to change today as an area of steady and potentially heavy rain is moving in our direction.

So far we have only received a little over 1/8 inch on Southport and a mere 0.3 inches in Boothbay. We need more and it looks like we should get a little under 1/2 inch by this afternoon with some lingering showers possible.

I will be preparing the the outlook for the coming week later today, after I get a couple of projects out of the way.

06/09/2024

Scattered to Numerous showers and possible thunderstorm through the weekend (June 7-9). The mountains on northward will have the highest precipitation amounts. Coastal areas will have marine layer over the area this evening and mix out Sat. morning with the loss of onshore flow. Saturday night will be the driest across the area. Sunday is when showers have the highest chances south of the mountains, but could occur anytime this weekend.
