Another major loss this week with Affrilachian poet, Nikki Giovanni, who was born in Knoxville, TN, a town she wrote about in this poem and others: https://poets.org/poem/knoxville-tennessee

Ms. Giovanni tackled race, gender, s*x, politics and love. She was a celebrity poet and public intellectual who appeared on television and toured the country.

Today, we mourn the passing of Affrilachian writer, educator, scholar, and performance poet, dr. doris diosa davenport. Dr. davenport's wisdom lives on in her words and in those whose lives she touched. If you're unfamiliar with her work, we encourage you to seek it out.

We are so sad to hear of the passing of our friend and poet/activist/educator doris davenport. doris was a regular performer at Charis until just months prior to her death. She mentored younger poets and supported so many writers from around the country. She was the author of many books of poetry, including two which are available at Charis: rectify my soul: & other writings, and Madness Like Morning Glories: Poems. Her essay, "The pathology of racism: a conversation with third world wimmin," was included in the foundational feminist anthology, This Bridge Called My Back. We recently found this picture in our summer trip to our archive at Duke. We were so excited to send it to her. doris is pictured here (top) at Charis in 1995 with BJ (below). We will miss her wild and dancing spirit.
