Disclaimer:

“Why are you so critical?”
“Why don’t you just have faith?”

We hear these questions usually in reference to the Bible, because that’s what we spend most of our time talking about, so let’s approach this from a point everyone can agree on:

Not everything we are told in life is true.

We are presented with information today at a scale unlike ever before, on the internet, on tv, even in the break room at work.

I think we can all agree that it’s not good to just believe or have faith in everything you hear. That’s a definite way to be mislead or manipulated.

Reality is that some things are true and some things are false.

If your goal is to situate your life around believing what is true, then you have to be critical of information with which you are presented. Again, because some things you’re told will be false.

So what’s the best way to manage this?

We have to start with the source.
Ask ourselves, “Is this source of information reliable?”

If you’re getting it from a teacher or preacher or coworker or even a scientist, we need to go one step further and ask what is their source? What is the primary source of this information I’m being told to believe?

In the case of science, it should boil down to an experiment of some sort. If it’s a good experiment it should have been repeated several times, demonstrating the likely truth of what’s being claimed. It’s from there that faith can take over.

I can have faith that my car will crank, or that my tv will turn on, or that the medicine I take or surgery I receive will be effective because the source of the information is likely accurate.

In the case of journalism, it should boil down to an eye witness who has demonstrated trustworthiness or a document that can be examined. Viewers of this journalism can then have faith that the information is likely true.

Now for the average person, we don’t always go back to the primary source for everything we believe, but we usually trust that the expert or the surgeon or the journalist has done that leg work for us. However, if some things start looking fishy or not lining up or not working like they were claimed, either we or other experts who understand the information may go back and look at the source to challenge the reliability of what is being claimed.

If the initial information can be proven to be false, our faith in that source will be affected.

In the case of religion, the source is usually a book. For Christianity, it’s the Bible. This is the source on which preachers and teachers are basing their truth claims in which average people then place their faith.

What happened for us, is that in our walk of faith in this information we had been taught, we spent a lot of time studying the source of the claims we believed. During this process we came across things that seemed fishy or didn’t exactly line up, so in our preference to believe what is true, we began to look critically at the source.

This podcast is nothing more than our presentation of what we’ve found while studying the sources of our faith. Yes, as the title of the podcast suggests, we’ve had to “shift” our faith based on what we’ve discovered, but this is only a result of our desire to believe what is true and reject what is false.

So, our critical thinking and careful placement of our faith should not be mistakenly viewed as negativity or arrogance but simply as honesty and a love for truth. Our goal is to help people avoid manipulation and give listeners the tools to think through the overwhelming amount of information they are presented with everyday. We attempt to do this respectfully and, overall, to promote kindness and curiosity.

We love you all and thanks for listening!

Never let someone convince you that you’re incapable of thinking for yourself.

Slaves

1 Peter 2:18 - “Slaves, accept the authority of your masters with all deference, not only those who are kind and gentle but also those who are harsh.”

Lev. 25:44-46 - “Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.”

Exodus 21:20-21 - “When a slave-owner strikes a male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies immediately, the owner shall be punished. But if the slave survives for a day or two, there is no punishment; for the slave is the owner’s property.”

Exodus 21:7-8 - “When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not go out as the male slaves do. If she does not please her master, who designated her for himself, then he shall let her be redeemed; he shall have no right to sell her to a foreign people, since he has dealt unfairly with her.”

Women

Lev. 27:1-5 - “The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to the people of Israel and say to them: When a person makes an explicit vow to the Lord concerning the equivalent for a human being, the equivalent for a male shall be: from twenty to sixty years of age the equivalent shall be fifty shekels of silver by the sanctuary shekel. If the person is a female, the equivalent is thirty shekels. If the age is from five to twenty years of age, the equivalent is twenty shekels for a male and ten shekels for a female.”

Lev. 12:1-2,5 - “The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to the people of Israel, saying:
If a woman conceives and bears a male child, she shall be unclean for seven days; . . . If she bears a female child, she shall be unclean for two weeks…”

Rev. 14:4 - “ It is these who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are virgins; “

1 Tim. 2:9-15 - “the women should dress themselves modestly and decently in suitable clothing, not with their hair braided, or with gold, pearls, or expensive clothes, but with good works, as is proper for women who profess reverence for God. Let a woman learn in silence with full submission. I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she is to keep silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Yet she will be saved through childbearing, provided they continue in faith and love and holiness, with modesty.”

1 Cor. 14:33-35 - “As in all the churches of the saints, women should be silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be subordinate, as the law also says. If there is anything they desire to know, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.”

Deuteronomy 22 - read all of it.

FACT CHECK: on episode 6, TJ made the claim that the word translated as “slave” in 1 Peter 2:18 should NOT be translated as “servant.” He was basing this on his memory of hearing an interview with New Testament translator Jennifer Knust. However, Knust was referring to a different word used by Paul in his letters. Turns out the word in 1 Peter 2:18 can be acceptably translated as “household servant.”
