A Newfoundland Journey

Many ask why a Newfoundland was our breed of choice or how we came across the breed. Well it all started while we were in college and our love for dogs.

Failed Foster

When we were in college we started fostering Malamutes, it was the perfect time for us to be foster parents as all expenses were taken care of for us. We had to love, train, and prepare these wonderful dogs for potential adopters. However this did not come without its challenges, many came from a puppy mill in Montana where there was over 200 dogs on the property. These poor animals showed up to us untrained, fearful of humans, and completely emaciated. Through all of this we became failed foster parents of our beloved Tundra.

For your typical Malamute, he had no interest in going on runs, biking, or really doing anything that was too active. He did enjoy the occasional hike, or walk but even those could not be too long. While we were originally fostering Tundra we also took in Jessica’s family dog Jade, a wonderful yellow lab

A Yellow Labs Personality

Jade was nothing like Tundra when it came to activity. She could often times be seen pulling Robert along on the bike or a scooter. She loved to run and continued to do so until age 13. Jade & Tundra both had an affinity too little kids, they would pull us around to make sure they could go see them. Jade's love of people and wanting to please us and everyone around her made her a special dog in our hearts. She went blind at an early age but it never stopped her from the things she enjoyed, running, getting pets, and chasing cats. She was kind of stubborn that way.

So why a Newfoundland?

Well a Newf is everything that we loved the most about our dogs Jade and Tundra. They love kids, are sweet as can be, a little stubborn and like the perfect amount of activity. Newfies are very intelligent as they were breed to be working dogs, pulling carts or rescuing people at sea. At the same time they love nothing more then hanging out with their human companions and do not require you to run them everyday or even twice a day like we did for some of our Mals. Yes they are a very large breed with males getting around 150lbs and females around 130lbs but ask yourself this. “Shouldn’t your dog be as large as all the love they give” They are so much easier to hug this way. So for all of these reasons we ended up with Newfoundland Puppies.

What is next?

Well... We are well on our way to getting Baloo certified as a therapy dog. Our only hold up so far is his age, as therapy dog certification requires your dog to be at least a year old to test. He currently goes to training 3-4 days a week and is completing tasks and drills that dogs a lot older then him are still struggling with. We are very proud of him and all his work thus far, but he still has a weakness for treats :) He cannot resist just taking a nibble from anything he thinks could be tasty.

For Bianca she definitely has Jade's soul in her. She is stubborn to a fault but could not be more eager to please and have your attention at all times. She is well on her way to getting into advanced training as well and we believe she will probably pass Baloo at some point because of this drive she has.
