Glide ratio directly correlates with stall speed and general low speed handling of the aircraft. Usually, for low drag aircraft (so biplanes need not apply), the better is the glade ratio, the lower is stall speed and thus one may think that it could be used to gauge the landing characteristics of the airplane… but not really.
Glide ratio is usually given for aircraft in clean configuration, meaning no external loadouts and mechanization off. The optimal glide ratio is also achieved at glide speed which is close to climb speed. It is basically the speed where both induced and parasitic drag are at their lowest, so you have the best lift to drag ratio.
Meanwhile, landing is done at lower speeds, closer to stall speeds actually.
To achieve aircraft going at such low speeds, the mechanization is used.
You won’t be using mechanization for best glide ratio; while it radically increases the lift, it also increases induced drag and your glide ratio will decrease dramatically.
For landing, this is not the issue, you have engine power to keep the aircraft at the needed speed. The goal here is not the best glide ratio, but minimal speed in glideslope.

Phantom had well developed mechanization, massive trailing edge flaps and leading edge flaps (later slats) which means that it could keep glideslope at 130–140 knots (240–260 km/h). Which is fairly good and comfortable.
