Rain will move in late tonight across Indiana. Most seeing around a quarter inch with higher amounts possible across SW Indiana and lesser amounts possible across northern Indiana if snow can mix in.

Rain may mix in or change over to snow across Northern Indiana early Saturday morning after 1:00am. Widespread snow accumulations are not expected however, some light slushy accumulations are possible (less than 1 inch). Temperatures will remain marginal tonight (33-35°F) across central and northern IN which will limit overall impacts.

Behind this system is an arctic cold front which is already moving into the upper plains today! This arctic front will bring very cold temperatures starting Sunday and lasting through Wednesday. Wind chills will be as low as -20 to -30°F.

⚠️Rapid freezing underway across the state! ⚠️

Use caution on the roadways and watch for black ice!

Roadways are becoming especially slippery as water and snow are freezing to the roadway! Wind driven snow has blown over many area roadways this afternoon. Temperatures near or slightly above freezing caused a lot of that to melt on the roads this afternoon. North-South oriented roadways seem to be the most affected from drifting.

That water is now rapidly freezing as temperatures drop, especially in rural areas! The roads that are most affected are untreated roadways and rural backroads!

⚠️Black ice is possible tonight across the state where liquid water on area roads refreezes overnight tonight! ⚠️

Rain totals through Saturday! And the science behind a process termed "Wet Bulbing."

Rain will move into the state late Friday night and into Saturday. Most areas will see around a quarter of an inch or less. Higher amounts are possible across SW Indiana. Snow may mix in across parts of Central and Northern Indiana, which may lead to some slushy accumulations early Saturday morning. We may add some light snow accumulations if confidence increases that wet bulbing will occur to overcome marginal temperatures to allow snow to accumulate.

There is also a possibility that some rain may freeze on untreated roadways due to cold ground temperatures. We will not have a freezing rain event. However, if surface temperatures are slow to warm rain we may freeze for a breif period to area roadways where ground temperatures are below freezing.

How can it snow if air temperatures are above freezing?

We are watching for some snow mixing in across portions of Central and Northern Indiana despite air temperatures being marginal in the low-mid 30s. This is only possible through a process termed Wet Bulbing. This is when the wet bulb temperature is below 32°F while our air temperatures are above 33°F. Wet bult temperature (WBT) is a measurement of how much the air can be cooled by water evaporation.

As humans, our bodies cool by the same process. When we sweat, we cool our bodies by the evaporation of sweat. The evaporation of sweat cools the air surrounding our skin, making it feel colder. This is the same process in the atmosphere.

If the evaporation rate is very high, meaning water droplets are evaporating quickly, the surrounding air temperatures will begin to cool. This will allow snowflakes to fall all the way to the ground without melting even though temperatures at the surface are above 32°F!
