On Monday, February 21, the Provost of Indiana University Bloomington condemned antisemitic comments targeting Jewish students on campus. These comments reflect a broader pattern of increased antisemitic activity at IU and in society at large. This was on sickening display on January 15 when Jews were taken hostage during services at Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, Texas. Mercifully, this attack ended with no fatalities.

As members of the IU community, we have a unique opportunity to learn more about how the law and legal institutions can be used to combat antisemitism. On March 14-15 the Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality is co-sponsoring the inaugural Law vs. Antisemitism Conference, to be held at IU McKinney School of Law, in person and remotely. This conference, the first of its kind, will gather more than 50 legal scholars, practicing lawyers, activists, and community leaders to explore the intersection of law and antisemitism. Speakers include representatives from the Secure Community Network, which provided safety training to the rabbi and congregants at the synagogue in Colleyville, the Anti-Defamation League, the nation's leading Jewish anti-hate organization, and leaders of the Indiana Jewish community.

Don’t forget our event tomorrow at noon!

The Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality is hosting its fall symposium event on Tuesday, November 16 from 12:00PM to 1:00PM in the Moot Court Room (123) at Baier Hall. The event consists of a panel discussion regarding cultural roadblocks to education that exist for many students in rural Indiana. Our scholars will discuss how we as law students and attorneys can provide resources and mentoring for those students to access higher education and aid them in entering and succeeding in the legal profession (and other careers). Our panelists include: Professor Kevin Brown, Vincent Isom, Director of the 21st Century Scholars Program at IU, and Mary Stephenson, Director of the Groups Scholars Program at IU.

Professor Kevin Brown is a Richard S. Melvin Professor of Law at Indiana University Maurer School of Law. He was the director of the Hudson & Holland Scholars Programs from 2004 to 2008. His scholarship and research focuses on law and education, race, American society, and the law. He has published nearly sixty articles and comments on issues related to race, law, and education.

Vicent Isom is the Director of the 21st Century Scholars Program at Indiana University Bloomington. He leads a team of 5 full-time student support services professionals who serve 3,000+ undergraduate scholars across the University's 16 degree-granting colleges, programs, and schools. Vincent is originally from Richmond, Indiana, and is a proud IU Groups Scholar Class of 1991 alumni.

Mary Stephenson has been the Director of Groups Scholars Program at Indiana University Bloomington since 2013. The Groups Scholars Program recruits and enrolls primarily first generation, low-income students for the Bloomington undergraduate student body. Prior to leading the Groups Program, she worked as an Associate Director for Diversity Programs and the Director of Community and School Partnerships at IU.

Hello Maurer Community!

Happy to announce IJLSE is doing a series of presentations this year on various issues regarding Race, Inclusion, and the Law.

Our first speaker this semester is Jonathan Perez, an ADA in Brooklyn who focuses on social equality. Jonathan has created a workshop called "Justiceology-By-Design." This workshop is about the history of systemic inequity, particularly laws that have created and upheld inequity. More info here: https://justiceology.com/.
Jonathan's workshop is normally a much longer event, but has created a condensed version for Maurer students and the Indiana Legal Community.

The event will take place Wednesday, October 7th from 12:30-2PM over zoom. Students who have to leave early for class may depart at 1:30PM. Additionally, 1.5 CLE CREDITS ARE AVAILABLE!!!

Please register by emailing [email protected].

Thank you!
