Nap Time in Kindergarten in the 1950s
The Importance of Nap Time
In the 1950s, nap time was a crucial part of the kindergarten experience. Educational philosophies of the time emphasized the importance of rest for young children to support their growth and development. A typical kindergarten schedule included a dedicated nap time, usually after lunch, when children would lie down on mats or cots brought from home or provided by the school.
Setting the Scene
Classrooms were often arranged with mats or small cots spaced evenly apart, ensuring each child had a comfortable and personal space to rest. Teachers would dim the lights and create a calm, quiet environment conducive to relaxation and sleep. The atmosphere was one of tranquility, designed to help children recharge for the remainder of the school day.
Music for Nap Time
Music played a significant role in setting the tone for nap time. In the 1950s, the selections often included soft, soothing melodies to help children drift off to sleep. Here are some types of music and specific examples that might have been played during nap time:
1. **Classical Music:** Pieces like Claude Debussy's "Clair de Lune" or Ludwig van Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" were popular choices. The gentle and flowing melodies of these compositions created a peaceful ambiance.
2. **Lullabies:** Traditional lullabies such as "Brahms' Lullaby" or "Hush, Little Baby" were common. These songs had been used for generations to soothe children to sleep and were a staple in many households and classrooms.
3. **Nature Sounds:** Some teachers might have used recordings of nature sounds, like the gentle flow of a stream or the soft rustling of leaves. These sounds were believed to have a calming effect, helping children relax and feel at ease.
4. **Popular Music:** Occasionally, more contemporary tunes from the 1950s that had a soothing quality might be used. Songs like Nat King Cole's "Mona Lisa" or Bing Crosby's "Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ral (That's an Irish Lullaby)" provided a comforting and familiar backdrop for nap time.
The Experience
For many children, nap time was a cherished part of their day. It offered a moment of respite and a break from the structured activities and learning. Teachers played a crucial role in ensuring that this time was both restful and beneficial. They often walked softly around the room, gently patting a back or offering a comforting word to any child struggling to settle down.
In summary, nap time in the 1950s was more than just a break; it was an essential component of early childhood education. The careful selection of music and the nurturing environment created by teachers contributed to a restful and rejuvenating experience for young children, laying the foundation for a productive and enjoyable school day.

The skeletal remains in question are attributed to Greek warriors who participated in the Battle of Himera in 480 BCE, located in proximity to modern-day Palermo in Sicily. On the same date as this confrontation between Greek forces and Carthaginian troops, a significant engagement occurred at Salamis, where the Greeks achieved a decisive victory over the Persian Empire, approximately 1,344 kilometers (835 miles) away. This rare historical occurrence represents a critical juncture, signifying the simultaneous success of Greek military forces against two of antiquity's most formidable powers. Such victories were instrumental in the preservation of Greek culture and sovereignty. The remains discovered at Himera serve as a testament to the profound sacrifices and resolute determination that underpinned the survival of Greek civilization in the face of formidable challenges..

Medieval box beds were a fascinating solution for comfort and warmth 600 years ago! These wooden, enclosed beds created a snug and cozy space by trapping body heat, making them perfect for chilly nights. Beyond their ability to keep people warm, they offered much-needed privacy in shared homes, where multiple individuals lived under one roof. Their compact design was brilliant for saving space, and many featured intricate decorative carvings that reflected the style of the era.

If by accident or curiosity, you've tasted sea water!!
This image shows us the microfauna that exists within a single drop of sea water, expanded 25 times.
The salty taste of the sea isn't just salt: there are cyanobacteria, zooplankton, worms, fish eggs, crab larvae, and plenty of other insects..

"My name is Caryn Elaine Johnson, but everyone knows me as Whoopi Goldberg. I am an EGOT artist (meaning I hold the four most prestigious American entertainment awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony), signifying an actress who has excelled in everything—television, music, film, and theater. They say I have an irresistible charm and an energy so powerful that I could go to the Vatican and ask Pope Francis to act in Sister Act 3, while also celebrating on my American show the tribute paid to me by Fiorello on Italian TV.
I won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Ghost in 1990 (becoming the second African American woman to win after Hattie McDaniel, who played Mammy in Gone with the Wind) and was nominated for Best Actress for Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple. I have also won two Golden Globes, two Emmys, a Saturn Award, four People's Choice Awards, five Kids' Choice Awards, seven Image Awards, two Drama Desk Awards, and a BAFTA. In 2002, I was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
I have directed and produced documentaries, musicals, and films acclaimed by both audiences and critics. I am an activist for human rights, AIDS research, and children's rights. I have appeared in countless American TV shows and series and, among other projects, co-hosted nine seasons of Comic Relief, a charitable television special benefiting the underprivileged, alongside Billy Crystal and Robin Williams. Since 2007, I have been one of the hosts of The View, a popular and progressive ABC program.
At the age of 68, I wrote my autobiography titled Fragments of Memory.
In this memoir, which I also wrote to help me cope with the loss of my mother Emma, I recount my life from my childhood (growing up in New York City’s housing projects, trips to Coney Island, ice skating shows, and museum visits) to my career, successes, and failures. The book is a tribute to the pivotal figures in my life—my mother and my brother Clyde, both of whom passed away in recent years. My mother, proud, practical, and indomitable, instilled in us the love and wisdom needed to succeed in life, always encouraging us to be honest, at least with ourselves."

An ice-age bison was discovered... then soon eaten, once the foul taste was smothered :
During Alaskan Gold Rush, eager miners used high-pressure water guns to sweep away frozen silt, possibility of gold right underneath it in gravel. They often came across mummified carcasses of large animals, but paid them little mind, tossing them to side to continue their excavations. In July, 1979, a busy miner uncovered a pair of bison feet poking awkwardly out of mud, but instead of working around it, he decided that maybe someone should take a look at his find.
What the miner had uncovered was something remarkable. They unearthed the mummified body of a 36,000 year-old Steppe bison now called "Blue Babe" in Alaskan tundra and shortly after, they sliced off a piece of its neck to eat. As remains were often incomplete, and would be discarded by miners, who were more interested in gold than in frozen animal remains. In 1979, a family of gold miners, Walter and Ruth Roman, and their sons, were mining near Fairbanks. Water from hydraulic mining hose they were using melted frozen soil Blue Babe was embedded in, thus exposing part of bison's frozen remains. Miners named their find Blue Babe, in reference to metallic blue sheen of creature's hide, which reminded them of Babe the Blue Ox from American folklore of Paul Bunyan. Blue's mummy was so well preserved that there was evidence of horns and male genitalia, allowing for s*x identification. Horn remnants gave an annual sequence that helped estimate his age and claw.
Miners, aware of potential significance of their discovery, decided to contact University of Alaska and palaeontologist Russell Dale Guthrie was sent to scene. Guthrie identified animal as being a steppe bison form Ice Age, and thus was probably tens of thousands of years old. In order to avoid deterioration of carcass, Guthrie opted to excavate immediately. This course of action, however, was not entirely possible, as ground was still frozen, and it was close to several large ice wedges.

My Holy Grail has been obtained. A 1958 Kuba Komet from Germany. The original owner had it shipped back to the states when he was stationed there. He had it in his living room for 50 years before he passed. I’m guessing that’s why it’s still in immaculate condition. I intend to make many videos on the inside since there is very little documentation on these sets. This is truly a once in a lifetime find.

When archaeologists in Norway recently received a message from a hiker about a possible ancient artifact that had emerged from the melting ice in the Jotunheim Mountains, they rushed into action. The weather forecast called for snow later that day, and they knew that if they waited too long, an invaluable piece of history could be lost forever. And when they arrived at the site, they were astonished to find an ancient leather sandal. They dated it to 300 C.E. and noted that it followed the fashion of sandals worn in the Roman Empire during that same time period.

As a rehabber, I deal with animals passing away a lot. I’m usually pretty tough about it, I know it’s part of the job and some are just too far gone to save. I somehow keep working through it, still trying my best for the other animals in my care, but today broke me.
Two babies came in today that have been without their mother between 8 and 10 days. They were cold, dehydrated, rail thin, covered in fleas and ticks, and were so so pale and weak.
I started emergency treatment right away and one died in my arms while his brother frantically screamed and cried for him.
As I walked away with his siblings body to bury him, all I can hear are his devasted screams. I broke down. I can’t stop crying.
The cry from this little one has so much pain, loss, and anger in it… how anyone can think animals can’t feel emotions is beyond my comprehension. He’s still crying out now as I type this. I’m going to do everything I can for this baby. The world was beyond cruel to this poor creature. In his 5 weeks of life his mother and then his only friend were taken from him.
I’m writing this post just to say…. Please be kind to wildlife. 💔 Life for them is already so difficult, and often times humans just make it worse. Be kind to them.

Seeing this today brought tears to my eyes! Compassion has NOT gone out of style.
Today I made a quick stop at McDonald's after work. As I waited in line to order, an elderly handicapped gentleman wheeled himself over to the cashier in front of me. From what I perceived, the gentleman may have had a case of quadriplegia, the same medical condition my uncle has.
The man politely tried to ask the cashier something and it took him a few tries before either of us could understand he was saying "Help me please". Neither of us knew what help he needed, and the cashier suggested a few things before he figured out the gentleman needed help cutting and eating his meal.
To be honest, I thought the cashier wasn't going to help, especially during rush hour in downtown Chicago, but to my shock, he shut down his register and disappeared from view....
Not to get away from helping him, but to wash his hands and put gloves on! I had to stick around and see how this would play out, especially since it hit me so close to home with my own uncle.
The cashier came out from the kitchen, sat down, and began cutting the man's meal and helped him eat.
At that point, the tears started to gather in my eyes. My heart was so appreciative for what he did. I couldn't contain my emotions in the crowded restaurant.
This employee, who put everything on hold for this man, went above and beyond his responsibilities to help this handicapped customer out. That was the kindest and most humble thing I had ever seen.

In the heart of a bustling European city, amidst the clatter of plates and chatter of café patrons, there was a small, unassuming bistro that was home to a most unusual regular: a rotund tabby cat named Marcel.
Marcel wasn’t just any street cat. Years ago, he had wandered into the café as a scruffy kitten during a rainstorm. The café owner, Madame Claire, took pity on him and offered him a plate of leftover roast chicken. From that day onward, Marcel declared himself the café’s unofficial mascot.
As years passed, Marcel became a fixture of the bistro. Every morning, he would saunter in as the staff set up, inspecting the chairs and tables as if ensuring they met his high standards. By midday, he would select his favorite sunlit table, leap onto it, and curl into a perfect ball for a nap, oblivious to the amused stares of customers.
Tourists often snapped photos of him, dubbing him the “King of Café Soleil.” Locals joked that Marcel had the best job in the city: sleeping, eating, and basking in the adoration of passersby. Some claimed he brought good luck to the café, as business seemed to thrive under his watchful, albeit sleepy, eyes.
One particular afternoon, as Marcel napped atop his favorite table, a young artist named Lucille sketched him while sipping her coffee. Inspired by his air of unbothered elegance, she created a painting of Marcel lounging in his café kingdom. The painting caught the eye of an art dealer, and soon Marcel’s image was adorning postcards, mugs, and even a mural on the café’s wall.
Marcel, of course, remained blissfully unaware of his fame. All he cared about was that his table was always waiting for him, the sun always found him, and the occasional scrap of smoked salmon mysteriously appeared by his side.
In a city of lights and endless charm, Marcel was a small but delightful reminder that sometimes, the good life is as simple as a warm table, a full belly, and a little bit of sunshine.

On January 15, 1519, Vasco Nuñez de Balboa, the first European to divide the Pacific Ocean, died decapitated. Landmark exploration made possible by the instructions of indigenous guides.
In a complicated expedition filled with swamps, rains and enemies made their way to what he called the South Sea (Pacific Ocean). Fernando the Catholic, after hearing the good news, recognized Núñez de Balboa as the discoverer of the South Sea and the governance of Panama and Cohiba. Nevertheless, it was from this moment on that envy and betrayal affected the exploits of the explorer. Pedro Arias Dávila would enter the scene and the disputes over the newly discovered lands created an enmity between the two explorers.
While Núñez de Balboa chose to ally with the Indians and learn their customs, Davila chose plunder and war. Gradually, the insistence of the extremist to discover new lands and begin new expeditions began to seem suspicious behavior among the governors of the New Continent.
He later embarked on exploration of

I know I shouldn’t have done this, but I am 83 years old and I was in the McDonald’s drive-through this morning and the young lady behind me leaned on her horn and started mouthing something because I was taking too long to place my order. So when I got to the first window
I paid for her order along with my own. The cashier must have told her what I'd done because as we moved up she leaned out her window and waved to me and mouthed "Thank you.", obviously embarrassed that I had repaid her rudeness with kindness.
When I got to the second window I showed them both receipts and took her food too. Now she has to go back to the end of the queue and start all over again,
Don't blow your horn at old people, they have been around a long time.🤣😂🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️🍔🍟

Nadia Comăneci, the Romanian gymnast who made history by securing the first perfect 10 at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, began her career at a young age and quickly stood out for her exceptional talent. She was discovered at the age of six by coach Béla Károlyi, who saw in her an extraordinary potential for artistic gymnastics. Although his small stature may have raised doubts in some, he was never an obstacle to his sporting development in Romania.
Comăneci became an international sensation by achieving the perfect score on the asymmetrical bars, surprising the world with its precision and elegance. His performance even forced the Olympic Games electronic scoring system to show his rating as "1.00" because it wasn't programmed for a perfect 10. Her legacy made her a sports icon, inspiring generations of gymnasts worldwide.

Albert Einstein wearing sandals at Nassau Point, New York in 1939. He is sitting with David Rothman, a friend and local store owner. After some initial confusion in the store resulting from Einstein's thickly accented request for a pair of "sundahls", which Rothman interpreted as "sundial" the scientist was able to successfully purchase the white sandals on his feet for $1.35. He laughed off the episode, blaming "my atrocious accent!" The men remained close friends thereafter.

This starts my 22nd year of teaching middle school. Yesterday was quite possibly one of the most impactful days I have ever had.
I tried a new activity called “The Baggage Activity”. I asked the kids what it meant to have baggage and they mostly said it was hurtful stuff you carry around on your shoulders.
I asked them to write down on a piece of paper what was bothering them, what was heavy on their heart, what was hurting them, etc. No names were to be on a paper. They wadded the paper up, and threw it across the room.
They picked up a piece of paper and took turns reading out loud what their classmate wrote. After a student read a paper, I asked who wrote that, and if they cared to share.
I’m here to tell you, I have never been so moved to tears as what these kids opened up and about and shared with the class.
Things like su***de, parents in prison, drugs in their family, being left by their parents, death, cancer, losing pets (one said their gerbil died cause it was fat, we giggled😁) and on and on.
The kids who read the papers would cry because what they were reading was tough. The person who shared (if they chose to tell us it was them) would cry sometimes too. It was an emotionally draining day, but I firmly believe my kids will judge a little less, love a little more, and forgive a little faster.
This bag hangs by my door to remind them that we all have baggage. We will leave it at the door. As they left I told them, they are not alone, they are loved, and we have each other’s back.
I am honored to be their teacher.
