Becoming a successful podcaster takes time, commitment and the willingness to play the long game.
​
YOU can be a success even with the crowded space. Don't let that discourage you as long as you COMMIT to showing up again and again.

Podcasting is definitely playing the long game. And that goes for most things that we want in life that are worth going after.

If it was easy then everyone would be doing it, and hard work is the admission for achieving greatness.

The book Grit by Angela Duckworth has been on my reading list for sometime now and I’m circling back to this book as a reminder to keep going… to keep persevering in the face of doubts and adversity, because there will always be doubts and fears. This is just part of being human, so if we think there’s an endpoint to fear and doubt from our lives, then we’ll just continue to struggle and suffer.

Here’s the paradox— when we accept that this is part of life, those things don’t seem like a big deal, and we are free to focus on the process and completely surrender to the outcome.

If we did most things in life with this attitude, we would experience, success, and fulfillment in our lives.

You might not see results and it might feel like crickets for weeks months maybe even years. But that’s not the point…

The point is to keep going regardless of the outcome to let go of a goal to focus on the process instead.

Don’t give up. I’m here rooting for you to find the grit to keep ploughing forward.

Metrics and downloads are different for every podcaster. There is no special formula.
​
The number of downloads does NOT equal clients or money in the bank, so why sweat it? 🥵
​
The numbers don't tell the whole story, and are often quite meaningless which can lead to focusing more on the metrics and less on the meaning of the podcast.
​
Enjoy learning and growing, and focus instead on the “squishy metrics” of connection, relationships, community, and finding ways to be a better storyteller and how those create more engagement.
​
BUT if you really must know about the metrics, here you go …
​
The average for someone starting out 150-300 is typical DPE (Downloads per episode) and that’s out of the gate when downloads are usually on the higher side.
​
Then, DLs usually dip down a bit after the first 2 months and then level out for pods that have been around, and then it's all very nuanced.
​
🤔 What are you doing to create community around your podcast, to get engagement?
​
🤔 Are you guesting on other shows, and having strategic guests, etc.?
​
It's up to you and your efforts to grow your listenership and metrics, and this takes time and cultivation and it's different for everyone.
​
If you can see how podcasting is like any relationship, it can then be about putting the chapters of the relationship into perspective and forgetting the numbers, and enjoying the learning and growing process instead.

What legacy do you want to create with your words?

The podcasting philosophy that I teach is a deep holistic piece of my businesses, NOT an “extra” or separate thing.

Like any relationship, I believe a podcast needs cultivation, care, and attention.

It’s NOT a magic bullet or a way to create an instantly big audience.

Nurturing it, loving it, dancing with it, and having a bubble bath with is how everything else flows.

The microphone, the editing, which episode to start with, and all the other tactical things you’re thinking about is never where it starts.

Every successful podcaster I know had a vision, and fell in love with the art of the spoken word.

They loved up on their mic, their peeps, and that was it. They let go of stats and other vanity metrics.

They showed up from a place of joy like a kid walking into a candy store.

When you record from your heart and in the energy of connection, how could that NOT be the portal for receiving what you are seeking?

Here’s a Rumi quote I simply adore, which is framed and has been hanging on my wall for years:

“Let yourself be silently drawn by the stronger pull of what you really love.”

When I follow this, sometimes it’s scary, and it doesn’t always make sense, but it feels SO RIGHT.

Spread some fairy dust, turn on the mic, and create some alchemy with your words today.
