We can't lose sight of the fact that ... before the brutal cold & snow chances come in ... we have to watch for scattered severe storms in NWA & especially the River Valley Thursday night. A tornado or two can't be ruled out, primarily 8pm-3am Thurs night.

UPDATE:
-more confident now in most totals in NWA being closer to the inch to 1.5" mark. Also more confident now that temps will fall a few degrees below freezing in NWA on Tues, as the snow comes in. And with 30-40mph gusts, IT IS LIKELY TRAVEL WILL BE IMPACTED THROUGHOUT THE MORNING INTO AFTERNOON.

We're likely to get a dusting in much of the River Valley, some areas up to a 1/2". But, temps will be warmer, so travel issues are less likely in the River Valley.

1/8/24 SNOW FORECAST UPDATE:
-snow comes in Tues AM (mostly after 6/7am)
-temps fall a little below freezing in NWA during the AM, winds could gust 40+mph
-dusting-1.5" of snow in NWA (slick spots possible!)
-scattered dusting in River Valley
-ends during afternoon

That snow sure was pretty!

Forecast worked out nicely with this one. Timing was right on the money, accumulation forecast was very good for most and all of it melted by afternoon. BUT, totals were slightly higher than expected in Washington/Crawford/Madison county. Not perfect, but, really a very nice start to what will be an extremely difficult period of forecasting the next few weeks.

11am UPDATE:
-Bobby Hopper Tunnel back up & moving, I-49 looks good across the board now
-all other accidents also now cleared in NWA, most of the River Valley
-snow is over, melting has commenced & temps will remain above freezing thru Saturday

9:07pm UPDATE:
Watch for that fog tonight!

Visibility will be particularly low in central OK, where Dense Fog Advisories are already in place. But, our area will also see occasional dense fog. Take it easy if you'll be out & about in NWA/River Valley thru Sat AM.

12/16/2023

Areas of fog possible tonight in parts of NWA & the River Valley.

And with temps dropping to freezing & below in spots, freezing fog could deposit a small amount of ice. Roads will be fine (pavement temps will stay above 32°), but, might watch the bridges in the AM.

Get ready!

The Geminid Meteor shower peaks tonight. Best viewing will be during the few hours before dawn (but, you can see them at any time tonight). A few clouds here & there, but, mostly OK for viewing. Good luck!!!

Beautiful sunset in Ft. Smith this evening!

Just a whole bunch of warmer than avg this month, thru Christmas time ... at least. Hopefully we get rain! Warm/dry conditions in winter often lead to wildfire concerns.

Last thing any of us want is a "grass fire Christmas."

9:04pm UPDATE:
A line of intense storms continues to move thru the River Valley, now E & S of Ft. Smith. Small hail, lightning & occasional gusty winds likely. Still waiting to see if these can strengthen further & become severe as they move east. Watching closely

8:31PM UPDATE:
Storms have fired in Le Flore cnty, moving ENE. No warnings at the moment, but, some gusty winds, occasional small hail. A couple of these could strengthen & become severe eventually ... before exiting into central AR before 12am. Watching them closely
