On September 21st, 2021, A resident of the Sunnyland neighborhood in Bellingham was driving his vehicle down an ally when Michael Dull (who is listed as transient) approached his car and smashed the windshield with a large object that appeared to be an axe. The victim has no relationship with the defendant. The vehicle suffered considerable damage from the unprovoked attack. Bellingham Police were provided footage from a security camera showing the attack and shortly thereafter Mr. Dull was arrested and booked into the Whatcom County Jail on charges of Assault 2nd deadly weapon, Malicious Mischief 3rd and several other unrelated warrants. It should be noted that the incident occurred during a time when children are usually walking home from school.
In court Mr. Dull's release conditions were set as follows; Reside at a fixed address and post a $20,000 bond or $2,000 cash as security to assure his appearance in court. This would ensure that if Mr. Dull posted bail a bond company would monitor him during his release and ensure he appears for his court hearings or if he or someone else posted the cash option there would be an incentive for him to appear as ordered. However, on January 11th, 2022, Whatcom County Superior court reviewed release conditions and ordered Mr. Dull to be released on his own recognizance. Dull was not even ordered to report to pretrial services for monitoring.
Long story short, Mr. Dull who is accused of an unprovoked attack with a deadly weapon in a residential neighborhood in broad daylight was released from jail with no requirement of bail being posted and no pre trial monitoring ordered.
We will update this story as more developments come to light.
