Homemade Bug Spray Try one table spoon of Murphy's oil soap and one tablespoon of lemon-scented dish soap to a full spray bottle of water. Another mixture to get rid of bugs on plants is an onion, two jalapeno peppers and a head of garlic mix in a blender with a quart of water, then strain it and pour into a spray bottle. Alternate between both of these sprays and it will cure most any problem and will not harm plants.

As long as the ground is not frozen and can accept water, you should water at least your evergreens. Most other plants are fairly dormant by now and not using much water. Evergreens, on the other hand, keep their needles all winter and can lose water through those needles. Keeping water supplied to the roots on a weekly basis as long as possible into the fall and winter season will help reduce stress on those evergreens.

When thinning carrots sometimes they break off at ground level and there's no room to dig them out without damaging carrots near them. I found that a pair of pliers worked down around a buried carrot, held snug, and pulled straight up will pull them out. Pliers also work on some weeds that are otherwise hard to uproot.

Plants should be watered thoroughly at least twice a week when the heat is as constant as the last three weeks. It is best to gently apply water at the base of the plant. Rain is much better for the plants than city water. Rain picks up nitrogen from the air as it falls and feeds as well and hydrates the plants.
