25 years ago today I moved into the building where Sockit Studio would be constructed. Sockit was setup as an LLC in September of 1999 and the first session was 11/20/2000.
This picture was taken in my home office around the time I submitted the blueprints to the city and fire marshal to get approved for the building permits. I used graph paper glued to poster boards to convey the studio design & layout to my draftsman.
If you look closely at the poster board on the bottom left you can see my selfie at the mix position 😂 and the original design which spec’d an iso booth behind the control room. That idea was scraped when I selected the Mammoth location and realized I could ultimately setup two separate & independent studios that could also be combine as one large studio.
The desk shows my solder station setup for the first batch of wiring. You can see the equipment manuals I’d collected and session log binders on the top shelf. I lost a lot of magazines and manuals in the ‘16 flood but I was able to save the session log binders which contain the session reports I’ve been sharing recently.
I made a limited run of T-Shirts with the studio logo and website (before there was a physical address) that were given to family, friends, and those helping on trade. Printed above the studio info is “Support Local Music”
Second pix shows the finished & approved blueprints pinned to a wall during construction.

That time Sockit Studio owner was working at with Darkchild and his brother producing and tracking two new songs. On the session report you can see they were using an MPC60, Korg Trinity, & Roland Super JV (1080).
We were tracking to 2 x Studer 800 2” 24 track tape machines using an SSL 4K E console. Per the session report there were three 2” tapes used. Working with 48 track analog is a pain because you have a lead machine and a follow machine which can take up to 10-15 seconds to synchronize playback of the follow machine to the leader using SMPTE time code and synchronizing hardware. While this may be an acceptable “analog latency” for mixing it is not when tracking vocals where fast punch ins are required. Just playing the tape and having it physically cross over the playback heads degrades the recording , tape itself, and especially the high frequency content so a ruff mix of just the music, often known as a “2 Mix”, would be recorded to a third tape where all of the lead and background vocals could be recorded onto one tape without having to sync two machines and preserving the quality of the original music. Once extensive back ground vocals, often 16 tracks or more, were recorded to the third reel of tape then those BGV’s would be submixed or “2 Mixed” onto the 2nd reel of tape where the rest of the instrumentation was and would then be ready for a synchronized 48 track mix. The third reel would be kept close in case the BGV 2 Mix needed to be remixed for the final mix.

Tracking Bass guitar direct tonight for a producer client and wanted to give them a few options for their the mix so I took the Bass through the Radial JD7 to get a clean isolated split that feed the Avalon 2022 for ultra clean tone and a API 505 for a more saturated sound.

Sockit Studio is proud to support our local music community by offering our studios for rent to freelance producers and engineers. We have posted on our link in bio a wealth of information pertaining to the equipment & capabilities of our two studios. We have also shared our custom forms and examples that we use to document tracking setups, mix patching, recall notes, etc. These forms can assist in the planning of your sessions as well as documenting your work.
In Studio A we provide assistant engineers to assist in using our computer and interface setup or integrating your laptop and interface into ours. Senior Staff Assistants are more knowledgeable in the routing options of the analog equipment.
Studio B is available for rent to producers with their own laptop, interface, microphone, and headphones. Studio B rentals do not come with an assistant and availability is limited.
Producer Accounts also come with the following benefits:
The opportunity to participate in invitation only professional development sessions along with other staff members and interns. Topics include, advanced analog mastering, summing mixing using our API 1608 II console, how to incorporate hardware inserts into your workflow, drum recording and micing techniques, how to solder and make cables, etc.
For more information on this type of account please see our link in bio titled Freelance (PRO) Rate Card & Terms.

Kennan was the first engineer I assisted when I was promoted from intern at Unique Recording Studios NYC in September of ‘96. I tried not to fanboy out on him ….too much….. I went on to assist him numerous times over the next few years and learned a lot from this awesome dude.
