Kennan was the first engineer I assisted when I was promoted from intern at Unique Recording Studios NYC in September of ‘96. I tried not to fanboy out on him ….too much….. I went on to assist him numerous times over the next few years and learned a lot from this awesome dude.

This Friday we will be recording drums, bass, guitars, and a guide vocal using Studio A&B. Stop by from 12-6pm and visit with owner to get a quick look at how we can setup full band recording. He will also be available to discuss how we work with freelance engineers and producers.

Since 2008 Sockit Studio has work with the and its Audio Engineering Program. Owner has personally trained, mentored, and graduated over 25 students in this program. Devon is a 1994 Valedictorian graduate of Full Sail University with a degree in Recording Arts and has over 27 years of professional experience. Part of this experience includes working at Unique Recording and Sony Music Studios in NYC. Today we start our 24th year of service. We had our first session 23 years ago today. I would like to say a big thank you to our clients. It has been my true pleasure to help so many people express themselves. A huge thanks also goes out to the over 60 people that have worked at Sockit plus interns, students, family and friends that have helped make this happen. Sockit wouldn't be here without all of you. We had an awesome session engineered by with last weekend. Using four acoustically isolated & treated studios (Studio A&B together) we captured live performances of Drums, Bass, Rhythm guitar, Lead guitar, Saxophone and a Guide vocal simultaneously while everyone had line of sight for timing cues, communication, etc. The guitarist shared their own dialed in headphone mix and the rest of the musicians made their own mix with our Private Q Headphone system. Drums were recorded mostly through our Api 1608 II console & drum overheads were setup through AKG 414’s in a measured (AEA stereo bar) ORTF configuration through an Avalon AD2022. Bass was recorded DI through an API 505 DI with tone (API thickness) control. Saxophone was mic'd with a Royer 121 and API Pre. Both guitars were tracked through a Radial DI/ API preamp (in case reamping is needed) and acoustical with a Beyerdynamic m160 ribbon/ Shure 57 on one rig and an 57/ Sennheiser md421 on the other. Both Shure 57’s were preamp’d through our Focusrite ISA Two for impedance adjustment.

Just added this Focusrite ISA Two Preamp / DI to our collection. This brings our total number of preamps in Studio A to 24 in anticipation of our Studer 827 coming back online. We have multiple choices for high end vocal recording and full band tracking.

25 years ago today Sockit Studio owner assisted .hathaway.7505 on a session for " I assisted KRS on a number of sessions at both Unique and at Sony. On this session at Sony one the songs we worked on was called "5 Boroughs". The idea being that there would be MC's on the track representing each of the five boroughs. Rep'n Queens was Run, or Rev Run as he is currently known, from Run DMC. I have to say I had a hard time not fanboying out watching him on the mic! We also worked on a mix for "No Satisfaction until 7am and then came back six hours later for a 1pm-6am the following day where we worked on "Land of the Boogie Down". On a different session where he was producing for Carla Marshall he asked me to read out loud what he had written, in the voice of a news reporter, for one of the albums skits. Some of my most memorable sessions in NYC were working with KRS. He's an awesome guy and always a lot of fun to work with." -Devon K-

25 years ago today Sockit Studio owner assisted on a session for “ We would often have to calibrate the tape machines when switching tapes and you can see in the notes that we had to CAL for "Loved Real Hard Once". A lot of times songs have working titles that get changed before they are released. This song was probably later titled "When It Hurts So Bad". A few of the albums interludes were also worked on during this session and a lot of these sessions went all night. You can see this one went till 5:30 am." - Devon K-

Vintage Sony ECM-50 Omni Lavalier mic. Another classic we found that is no longer in production. This mic excels as a 2nd detail mic when micing up drums (be**er side), acoustic guitars (in the sound hole), and Hi Hats.

Recently added a Pendulum PL-2 Analog limiter. Two different circuit choices Jfet & Mosfet. It has the unique ability to limit without clipping the wave form. It really is like magic. Pendulums owner retured and the company closed up shop in 2017 so there are no more being made. I’ve had a running search for this for the past 3 years. Masters are notably louder with less distortion 🎯

We have retired our Yamaha DM2000 digital console and replaced it with a Grace Design m905 monitor controller for better monitoring clarity and flexibility. We have also added a set of Avantone MixCubes as well a Avantone Pro CLA-200 amp for our ProAc Studio 100 speakers.
