Press Release: Brush fire incident at Pioneer Park leads to Arrest

On Friday, January 10, 2025 at approximately 11:37pm, officers were dispatched to Pioneer Park, located at 1360 N. Dalton Ave., in response to a reported brush fire. Upon arrival, a witness alerted officers that the individual responsible for igniting the fire was still at the scene.

Officers located the adult male suspect, identified as Jose Carranza-Escobar, a transient, with a last known address in Azusa standing next to the flames. Officers quickly detained Carranza as Los Angeles County Fire arrived to extinguish the fire.   Los Angeles County Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.

During the investigation, Carranza admitted to starting the fire and was arrested for Arson. He was subsequently booked at the Azusa Police Department Jail and is currently being held in custody.   City of Azusa Public Works along with Azusa Light and Water are currently assessing the damage caused by the fire. The investigation is ongoing.

Azusa PD urges everyone to remain alert as fires continue to affect the county. We must be cautious of individuals who may enter our community with the intent to start fires.   The Azusa Police Department has staffed extra officers on duty due to the ongoing fire situation.    We are taking a “zero tolerance” stance on these types of criminal acts.   The Azusa PD will continue to work with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Los Angeles County Fire Department, the California Army National Guard and all of our partner agencies to ensure our community’s and residents’ safety.

This investigation will be presented promptly to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of filing on all applicable criminal charges.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Azusa Police Department at 626-812-3200 or to submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477).

All media inquiries can be sent to Azusa Police Captain Robert Landeros at [email protected] or (626) 812-3297.

1/10/25 8PM: We want to assure you that there is currently no threat to Azusa and no evacuations are in place at this time. We’re aware of the recent erroneous Wireless Emergency Alerts occurring due to a technical glitch, which is being addressed by Los Angeles County and FEMA. Should an evacuation warning or order become necessary, we will promptly share updates on our social media platforms and send Azusa PD Everbridge Alerts.

Things to do to stay prepared and informed:

1. Follow and
2. Sign up for Azusa PD Everbridge Emergency Alerts: https://member.everbridge.net/509490495488105/new
3. Download Watch Duty for fire updates and download Genasys Protect for evacuation zones
4. Fact check evacuations by checking AlertLA.org
5. Know the difference between an Evacuation Warning and an Evacuation Order. An evacuation warning means it’s encouraged for you to evacuate to be safe, however it is not mandatory. An evacuation order means you’re in danger and it is mandatory for you to evacuate.
6. Know your zone. LA County uses Genasys Protect to break up cities into zones that can be activated for evacuations. Download the Genasys Protect app to learn more, you can also visit protect.genasys.com

Let’s all do our part to keep our families safe. It starts with being informed and prepared during an emergency.

Schools Closed on Wednesday!

AUSD Community,
The safety of the Azusa community is our top priority. Due to the volatility of the ongoing high wind event, power outages affecting several schools, and the nearby Eaton fire, all AUSD schools and the District office will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

This decision was made in collaboration with the City of Azusa to prioritize public safety and ensure emergency resources are available. Additionally, this closure will allow District staff to thoroughly assess any potential damage to school sites and ensure that schools are safe for students and staff to return.

We understand the challenges of unexpected closures and sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding. Our primary concern remains the safety and well-being of our school community.

AUSD will continue monitoring conditions, and we will keep you informed with updates via email, our district website, and social media. Please stay safe, take precautions as advised by local authorities, and monitor official school and District channels for updates.
We appreciate your patience and understanding. Stay safe.

AUSD Community,
With profound sadness, we share the tragic passing of Angelina Gonzales, a 12th-grade student at Azusa High School and a cherished member of our school community. Angelina was an exceptional young woman whose talents and energy touched the lives of so many around her.

Angelina was a bright light in the classroom and a dedicated member of the cheer squad and wrestling team, where she demonstrated incredible spirit and determination. She was also an extraordinary artist, earning recognition in the Congressional Art Competition, where she was awarded 1st place in June and the Judge's Choice Award in 2022. As a recent 1st place winner, Angelina’s work is currently displayed in the U.S. Capitol. Her creative talents and vibrant personality enriched our community in countless ways.

This loss is tough as we approach the holiday season. Our hearts go out to Angelina’s family and friends. We understand that such a loss can deeply affect members of our community, and we encourage anyone in need of support to reach out. Social-emotional support is available to all AUSD families through Care Solace. Visit their website to access the resources: Caresolace.com/azusaparents.

Let’s honor Angelina’s memory by holding her family in our thoughts and embracing one another with care and compassion.
