The Neue Wache, located on Unter den Linden in Berlin, has undergone significant transformations since its construction in 1816. Originally built as a guardhouse for the troops of the crown prince of Prussia, the neoclassical building was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and stands as a symbol of military and architectural history. Its purpose evolved over the years, with the building serving various roles, from a guardhouse to a memorial, reflecting the changing political climate of Germany.

In 1931, the Neue Wache was repurposed as a war memorial to honor those who died in the First World War. Over the decades, its role as a commemorative site expanded, particularly during and after the Second World War. Today, it stands as a somber place of remembrance, particularly for those who lost their lives in both world wars. The building’s central feature is the "Mother with her Dead Son" sculpture by Käthe Kollwitz, which poignantly expresses the human cost of war. The sculpture was added in 1938 and has since become one of the most powerful symbols at the site.

As of 2024, the Neue Wache continues to serve as a war memorial under the care of the German government. Despite the changes in Germany’s political landscape, the building remains a significant site for reflection and remembrance. Today, it honors all victims of war and tyranny, extending its focus beyond the world wars to encompass victims of all forms of oppression and violence. The Neue Wache’s continued presence on Unter den Linden is a testament to the enduring importance of memory, history, and the lessons learned from the past.
